FLORIDA SCHOOL SHOOTING LATEST: SRD at Marjory Stoneman Douglas HS in Parkland resigns following school shooting | WSB-TV

PARKLAND, Fla. - A Florida sheriff says the deputy who was on duty at a high school where 17 people were massacred waited outside the building for about four minutes without ever going in.

Broward County Sheriff Scott Israel announced during a Thursday news conference that Deputy Scot Peterson resigned after being suspended without pay.

Israel said he made the decision after reviewing video surveillance and interviewing witnesses, including the deputy himself. The sheriff says Peterson responded to the building where the shooting took place, took up a position outside a door and never went in.

When asked what Peterson should have done, Israel said the deputy should have "went in, addressed the killer, killed the killer."

Authorities say 19-year-old Nikolas Cruz fatally shot 17 people at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland on Feb. 14.

Kerist on a cross- what was he thinking.

Just awful.

These kids may just feel betrayed on all fronts.

Im not gonna beat up on the guy. Im sure his own shame is eating him alive. Truth is that nobody knows how they will react in a moment of danger.

Resigning was the right call. He is not out for police work.

Trained and armed. Did nothing, as I mentioned in another thread, he would have to be deaf to not hear the gun shots.
Oh yes, this is a dup thread.

But was paid darn well and for quite a while for doing whatever he felt comfortable with.

Peterson has been a school resource officer at Stoneman Douglas since 2009. He began working for the sheriff’s office in 1985. His annual salary in 2016 was $75,673.72, according to sheriff’s office records.

We failed them completely, we adults. I hope they forgive us someday.

But we should arm teachers. NOT.

That's Blackwater money.

I bet he has a sweet retirement package as well. Best to resign (retire?) before anything bad comes out in the press to take that option off the table.

No, you didn't say that. Lots of others, including Twittler, have though.

Fair enough, and you being new here do not know where one stands on particular issues. No harm no foul.

Of course Gov. Scott was pointing his fingers at the fedgov, and now we know why.

"took up a defensive position"? So much for the vaunted GOOD GUY WITH A GUN. Maybe we need to clone a Wayne LaP to deploy at every school. What's his salary?

Arent all cops supposed to be 'the good guys with a gun?'

And if you dont expect them to protect others, how can you expect legal folks carrying to save others either? That's not our jobs or obligations and we have zero extra legal protections in doing so.

Money doesn't buy starch, this questions the argument to man schools with paid/trained security....

So, because this guy didn't act, as he should have, then that means that none will? That's pretty dumb dude.

True, but most that get "pubic service" jobs have those jobs for life (with earlier than private retirement ages and great benefits). We pay TSA when they fail most DHS security tests. It may not be a good argument for government security but is clearly an argument for why folks had best protect themselves as best they can.

That is pretty important for actually stopping an active school shooter. That is why not anyone and everyone is selected, trained, armed and well paid to do that job. I guess if we had one armed school security officer for every classroom and hallway it might work out OK but that might be just a tad too expensive for many school districts.

Nah, I don't think that kind of presence is needed....Restrict access points to one entrance, have security in place at that point to screen who comes and goes....Not that hard....
