Democrat wins state house race in Kentucky after a Republican’s scandal and suicide

Linda Belcher, a Democrat first elected in 2008, won the special election for Kentucky’s 49th legislative district with 68.45 percent of the vote. In 2016, as Donald Trump won Kentucky by the biggest margin of any Republican presidential candidate in history, Belcher lost by just 156 votes to Republican pastor Dan Johnson. Trump’s margin in the district, 72-23, was part of a rout that helped Republicans seize total political control of Kentucky for the first time in 96 years.

In the end, Belcher easily defeated Johnson, marking the 37th Democratic victory in a Republican-held state legislative seat since the start of 2017. One week earlier, Democrats won an upset victory in Sarasota, Fla.; one week before that, the party flipped control of a legislative seat in Missouri.

Wow that is a mark for democrats, they easily defeated a dead man with two thirds the vote, wow, wait dafuq is wrong with you people. glamouring over an election where you beat a man who committed suicide from the pressure of a smear campaign ran by democrats, and his wife ended up running for the republicans.

it is almost as if your side is bragging about having no shame or human decency, or even the slightest care of the smear campaign leading the man to suicide, or whether the allegations fueling it were true or false, but love to brag about the victory.

It's sad that a person had to die to make that happen.

No one should brag about a victory like this.

Your side is being led by a disgusting, perverted, corrupt, rapist, racist piece of **** who wants a dictatorship and the left and you want to call someone out for shame and human decency?

I agree, whether the accused did the act or not, I do not know since it is he said she said for evidence, accusations driving someone to suicide are never a point for victory, I would rather if he was convicted sit behind bars and be punished by a court of law. At this point the dead tell no tales and surely can not testify on their own behalf, and gloating about this as a victory for democrats is not wise for democrats, many other ones they can claim victory, but his just makes them look heartless, which is what they want to avoid with the midterms coming up fast.

Actually, she has always been very popular and barely lost last time. I'm not surprised; I voted for her! BTW, she originally took over for her husband.

That's a mighty interesting comment in the day and age of Trump.

Also, remember this election and how the right-wing media politicized Wellstone's funeral after his tragic death just days before the election?

Johnson wouldn't even show up to the public forum (scheduling conflict lol) and would not say what her platform was. It was a easy win.

Edit: I missed that you already noted the margin of loss in my other post.

Oh the irony that people are whining about having no shame or decency.

I think maybe people forgot who is in the White House. Hell, I think maybe people forgot some of the people on this board, complaining that kids were texting their parents, telling them goodbye and that they loved them, instead of throwing a chair at a man armed with an AR15.

I see you didn't read the article. The special election was held because this man commited suicide when is sexual abuse of a 17 year old girl at his church came out. The person who won the Republican primary was his widow.

...wow, wait dafuq is wrong with you people.

A person who asks "dafuq is wrong with people" should consider first that he didn't see anything wrong with "dafuq."

Learn that word in public school, did we?

Dafuq is wrong with our youth.

That does not change much, though you may be correct, the republican won in 2016 by a little more than 100 votes, and a special election held where the incumbent who lost in 2016 won her seat back. This is dancing on someones grave in terms of celebration, there was nothing ethical about pushing a man to suicide to gain a seat.

I had to google wellstones funeral because I had no memory of it, just as despicable, 2 wrongs do not make a right and exploiting tragedy for victory will never be right in my book no matter who does it.

No... I am not dancing on a grave. I am stating your scenario was incorrect.

Part of my statement was incorrect, and I did not accusing you of dancng on anyones grave, that was more directed towards the ops enthuiasm over the election, and ignoring the fact political pressure and a smear campaign led a man to suicide, I will also note the republicans were just as heavy on the smear campaign as democrats.

There is no real points of victory here worth bragging about, given the circumstances, when democrats have many others to brag about that did not come about from suicide.

How was he pushed to suicide?

Are you claiming he was factually innocent but a liberal conspiracy made him kill himself, and you can present the facts that prove it?

This.

There was no factual innocence or factual guilt in this case, however politicizing accusations to the point of suicide is never a good thing or something to brag about. Your argument seems to assume that since he killed himself he was guilty, however that is a poor presumption, as accusations and punishment by the court of public opinion can drive someone to suicide.

It's not as if the GOP couldn't have offered a candidate for the seat. Mrs. Belcher had held that seat for 2 terms until 2017.

I'd be curious to see a poll for why the district turned around that dramatically. You can't put all of that on increased Democrat energy.

Meanwhile you're acting like the OP took pleasure in his death.

Anyway, I remain interested in how the presumption of innocence seems to follow various persons on the right around whatever they are accused of but vanishes for persons on the left, Mr. "Socialist"....

Awesome, so now the Democrats control the Congress and the WH?? Amazing how Democrats running as Conservative away from the radical left democratic party are now cheered. You leftists however have a real problem

And then there are the economic results and bigger paychecks for all American workers. Going to be a tough November for the Democrats which are always based upon economic results and local in nature.

Because Belcher has always been popular in the majority of the district, just that the Republican rode in on the Trump (R) tidy-bowl wave and Johnson's wife was not popular enough to overcome.
