ATLANTA (AP) — Georgia transportation officials are exploring the idea of a separate highway for trucks only.
It would be the first highway of its kind in the United States, said John Hibbard, the Georgia Department of Transportation's operations director.

Knowing the traffic around Atlanta, I think this is a good idea, IF they can keep the 4 wheelers from invading the truck only highway.

I forgot which state I saw it in, but there's a few lanes specifically only for trucks, buses, and the other kind of "big rig" trucks. Atlanta traffic is literal hell but I don't know if Georgia of all states could rally around and actually improve it's infrastructure.

Atlanta is much different....They are very forward thinking in their infrastructure proposals....The problem is their drivers are pure idiots....Aggressive, selfish, unsafe morons...So, not so sure that they wouldn't invade the truck only highway...

The Pennsylvania Turnpike could benefit from that... On second thought, the PA Turnpike should probably just be carpet bombed.

It will not happen.

Georgia has just spent a fortune turning I-85 into a mess of "Express Lanes," and are in the process of doing the same thing to I-75. That plus the HOV lanes inside the I-285 perimeter, the varying speed limits on I-285, Gov. Nathan Deal already turning 400 shoulders into a travel lane during traffic hour, etc. the whole area is a mess.

We spend a fortune on study after study to deal with area traffic, but they always end up ignoring the golden rule. To handle with traffic you either need less cars or more lanes, Georgia never seems to figure that out.

I would have no problem with this. It would be an interesting test to see if it helped, and anything that might help traffic would be awesome. Driving 5 miles an hour on the highway coming back from doctors appointments, with google maps assuring me this is still the fastest route, not a fun thing.

Though I should say I wish they would spend some more money on side roads and down here in Henry County too. The area has grown much faster than the roads.

No. There is no larger a percentage of idiot drivers in Atlanta, it is just that there are so many drivers out there on Atlanta roads, and all it takes is one idiot to cause a backup...

I do not normally take 85, but the 75 express lanes are sweet. Well worth the time things where tied up.

Ahh, out west here it's nothing but open roads and open country. :2razz:

NJ has it.

The state transportation department's study projects that the truck-only lanes would reduce delays on Interstate 75 North by 40 percent.

Yeah, I'm in.

*shhhh* Not helping the argument. NJ traffic is hell, so don't let Georgia hear you say this.

NJ Traffic sucks only because there is no room here. GA is like 10X the size of us.

This will be great, as long as it isn't a shooting gallery for the DOT bears and the speed limit isn't 55.

There aren't any "truck only" lanes. There lanes that trucks can only use, but those lanes aren't off limits to cars.

Seems as if the cost of buying land and building completely separate hiways for truck would be quite expensive. Would the trucking industry be willing to accept more taxation for this?

Since we already have rail system between major cities perhaps they should look at improving the train system.

As for the sheep vs cattle battle of trucks and cars one shouldn't be so narrow minded to think the entire problems is idiot car drivers as I have seen some stupid stunts performed by those semi-pros.

Why should only truck drivers pay more? Auto traffic will benefit just as much from the reduced congestion.

Much of the land required is already under 'easement' and could be expanded with little to no additional procurement...Also, are you aware that the trucking industry in general is one of the highest taxed industries in America? But hey, you want to pay more for what you buy? Because, I can tell you, I will just pass it on.

Longer distances sure, but regional, would never work....

I won't dispute that...I've seen some real dumb asses behind the wheels of trucks as of late...In my nearly three decades of driving tractor trailer, I can tell ya, in most cases where it is car vs. tractor trailer, the car is the one that has made the fatal error...Either by cutting the truck off, jamming on brakes, or failing to yield....I could tell you some stories just from my last trip to Indy that would raise your hair....

80% of the accidents involving a big truck and a private vehicle are caused by the private vehicle.

That photo wasn't taken in The United States, BTW.

But, in all fairness, American truck drivers do the same stupid ****.

Ultimately, his point is "move it by rail".

Half the drivers in The United States have no business being behind the wheel of a big truck.

If the prices go up then I will buy less. The less I buy then the less need more products shipped. The less need for products results in less trucks. Less trucks = less congestion. Less congestion = no need for additional hiways.

Then we are right back where we started. Kind of like the arguments about increasing the minimum wage.

lol....It doesn't work that way....Every thing you have. Everything you buy, everything you wish to buy in the future, everything you do was made possible because of a trucker like me making sure you can buy it...You say you'll buy less...? Doubt it...

None of you people understand bad traffic until you've done the Everett to Seattle commute. You think you do but you don't. Maybe have a bit of a clue in NY or LA but, no, not most of you. And floating bridges, well they suck!
