Democratic Sen. Mark Warner texted with Russian oligarch lobbyist in effort to contact dossier author Christopher Steele

Democratic Sen. Mark Warner texted with Russian oligarch lobbyist in effort to contact dossier author Christopher Steele | Fox News

EXCLUSIVE – Sen. Mark Warner, the top Democrat on the Senate Intelligence Committee who has been leading a congressional investigation into President Trump's alleged ties to Russia, had extensive contact last year with a lobbyist for a Russian oligarch who was offering Warner access to former British spy and dossier author Christopher Steele, according to text messages obtained exclusively by Fox News.

"We have so much to discuss u need to be careful but we can help our country," Warner texted the lobbyist, Adam Waldman, on March 22, 2017.

"I'm in," Waldman, whose firm has ties to Hillary Clinton, texted back to Warner.
Waldman lobbied the U.S. government on behalf of billionaire Oleg V. Deripaska.
Deripraska had his visa revoked and hired a firm with close ties to Hillary Clinton to help him get a visa to enter the United States.

Warner wrote that he would "rather not have a paper trail" of his messages and his messages were turned over to the Senate panel by Waldman last September ... that's 6 months later.

They say Burr was aware that Warner contacted Steele's representative but not aware of the content of the messages at first and was not concerned that Warner was freelancing on the matter.
How marvelously decent of Burr.
Warner sure was anxious to get a hold of Steele.

It's obvious from the tone of the exchange that Warner was merely doing his patriotic duty to verify sources with Steele. Warner was obviously attempting to get Mr. Steele to come in and set the record straight for all the confused Republicans.

I blame whatever is in the water in DC.

Holy Cow
So let me get this right, Democratic Sen. Mark Warner texted with Russian oligarch lobbyist in effort to contact dossier author Christopher Steele......

Translation- Texts show Democrat Mark Warner head of Russia-Trump Collusion Investigation, colluded with a foreign spy, Russian Oligarch to dig up dirt on Trump.

Does that fall into treasonous?

I wonder how soon it will be before Mueller subpoenas Warner. I'm sure he has a lot of questions about his involvement with the Russians.

I read the entire text string and didn't see anything worth noting. Senator on Intelligence Committee wants to touch base with author of "dossier." OK, and.....?

What's the story other than "Senator doing his job."? Of course he wants to touch base with Steele. The allegations in the "dossier" are pretty serious, and it's his job on the Senate Intelligence Committee to investigate them as part of the Russia investigation then going on at the Committee. It would be shocking if he was NOT interested in touching base with Steele as a prelim to getting him to testify for the committee or a more formal interview.

Are you serious? I honestly can't tell.

What was the reason for not wanting a paper trail. I would think he would want everything on the record

I'm sure you're being sarcastic, but can you quote the texts that indicate something else?

One thing I saw was Steele was insisting on a "bi-partisan letter from the committee." Doesn't sound like someone colluding with anti-Trump forces. Steele is no moron - he knows the committee is chaired by Republicans. If Steele is the person we're worried about, as the author of the "dossier" the comments in the text string do nothing but vindicate him as wanting the contacts to be official, written, and bipartisan. I don't see how that helps the case against him - it's damning to that case from what I can see.

I have no idea what Warner's concerns were that required a preliminary phone call, but the conditions Warner put on the call before a letter was 10 minutes. Not a lot of time to "collude" in that time frame. More like lay out the general terms of the expected letter, and get objections to those before an official request. Sounds kind of normal to me.

Ah Fox, doing its damndest trying to make a false equivalence.

[h=1]The Smearing of Christopher Steele[/h]A former British intelligence officer provided information to the FBI because it alarmed him. Given the way he’s been treated, future tipsters will be less likely to come forward.

Every time you guys mention "fake news Steele," I have to laugh. It's funny that he keeps coming back. I thought he was a nothing burger?

Seemed pretty obvious in context. He wanted a call with Steele before committing a formal request letter in writing. I'll quote the text - "if we can't get agreement wud rather not have paper trail" of formal letter from committee. Before that "want to discuss scope first before letter."

I'm no lawyer but I worked in a law firm for years, and this seems normal as hell to me with a cooperating witness. We did similar all the time to attorneys for people on our side of some issue - "Hey, we're going to send a letter asking for this and this. Any objections? Great. Thanks. It will get in the mail today..." whatever. I assume Steele can't be forced by the Senate to travel to the U.S. to testify in a Senate hearing, so the terms are up to Steele. Better to work out the broad outlines offline before sending the official request.

Maybe it is SOP, I don't know. It just seems odd to not want a paper record of his attempt to contact Steele. It shows an earnest effort to contact the man. I'm not an expert in these type of matters but I really can't think of a legitimate reason why he would not want everything on record.

Since we can see his text then it was on the record. He had nothing to hide.

Thanks, so that bogus effort failed pretty quickly. Oh, well, they'll try another faux outrage soon enough.

Oh, I don't know. He did wait 6 months to tell them. This might very well be nothing but the optics aren't very good.

Yip that was my initial reaction.
Of course he would want to contact him.

Mark Warner made off-the-record contact with Christopher Steele in March of 2017

Marco Rubio today: Sen.Warner fully disclosed this to the committee four months ago.

4 months ago was September ... Inspector General Michael Horowitz found out ... Warner was caught and Marco Rubio and Richard Burr cover for him.

Trump told us on Monday:

Little Adam Schiff, who is desperate to run for higher office, is one of the biggest liars and leakers in Washington, right up there with Comey, Warner, Brennan and Clapper! Adam leaves closed committee hearings to illegally leak confidential information. Must be stopped!
