The U.S. official in charge of protecting American elections from hacking says the Russians successfully penetrated the voter registration rolls of several U.S. states prior to the 2016 presidential election.

In an exclusive interview with NBC News, Jeanette Manfra, the head of cybersecurity at the Department of Homeland Security, said she couldn't talk about classified information publicly, but in 2016, "We saw a targeting of 21 states and an exceptionally small number of them were actually successfully penetrated."

Jeh Johnson, who was DHS secretary during the Russian intrusions, said, "2016 was a wake-up call and now it's incumbent upon states and the Feds to do something about it before our democracy is attacked again."

"Exceptionally small" = probably not enough to sway the election, but the fact that this is even possible is alarming.

It was reported in a story in September that 21 states had been hacked, though it did not say which the exact 21 states were. This article says some of those hacks actually succeeded, and again it won't say in which states they succeeded.

The writers of both articles have to know that would be the overriding question on our minds. Why won't they address it?

Anyway, I used to believe that voting should be done online. I've had some bad ideas in my life, but man, that one was a doozie.

If the Russians can do it, how long before other countries with a stake in who gets elected join the party?
Damn. This is the reason Mueller was hired by the Attorney-General's office, to find out if it can be done, if it was done and how, And the Trumpsters want the investigation shut down because collusion? Obstruction? Those are peripheral issues, they might apply or might not but the investigation into interference in the election absolutely must have a result.
Hell, there might get to be corporations having a go. Who'll know who's who and what's what in a Presidential election campaign? How could anyone not want this investigation to continue as long as it needs to?

I didn't see any facts presented to substantiate the accusations. CIA vault 7 hacking techniques leave intentional foreign fingerprints as a false flag. Golly gee, have we double checked that. I'd start there. Russian misinformation and disinformation is an ongoing theme since the election of the wee puckin' fingers tweetin' cheeto.

Does someone want to translate this into non-tinfoil?

All it takes is for them to alter a number or two, an address or name to sow chaos in an election. But 45 doesn't care.

Rolls are not voting results; still, really concerning.

Thanks to Comey's late October Surprise, pushed by rogue right-wing FBI agents ...

Did you hear Tillerson's remarks today that we can't stop Russia and its allies from hacking our elections?
I'd add every facet of our government also, especially our Military.

Have you seen any evidence that anyone in the trump circle is working on this problem?
Why do you think trump is the last 'American' who won't admit Russia interfered in our elections, and continues to ?

Ummmm

I was responding to the poster who was defending Russia honor on the matter...

And since I am not an effing NSA level IT guy why would I see what was being done about this?

Yep I saw that too. Trump is ignoring the whole thing. Sorry to the righties here but I firmly believe that Trump has sold us to Russia. I pray for Mueller daily.
Even one of the generals has said Trump acts like he's a Putin puppet. Scary stuff.

Putin said he didn't do it.
That's good enough for the POTUS.

This has been reported since 2016...remember the girl in Georgia that went to jail in 2016 for leaking this information.

We know it happened, why the **** aren't states that use computer systems with no receipt not starting the process of using paper ballots.

The answer is easy.... Trump!

So...either the article is correct, which means the Obama administration failed to protect our voting system or...what's more likely given all the other crooked stuff Obama's people have done...it was really the Obama administration doing the hacking.

Isn't it a good thing Obama is gone? Isn't it a better thing Hillary didn't get elected? She would have carried on where Obama left off.

The generals are now saying they don't recognize this chief of staff kelly anymore either.

I doubt all of this action by trump people was intentional either.
More like incompetence, negligence, and misfeasance.

The only recourse we have is for Pence, McConnell, and Ryan to pull the plug on this catastrophe.

In 1974, before my Junior year in College,
it took a string of special election losses by that GOP before they pulled the plug on Nixon ...

For those who still believe that Russia is our friend, you need to move there.

There are like 3 million hacks a day...show me how it mattered if you want my attention .

Proof will be required.

YA, I KNOW!

Tillerson flat out admitted we can't stop Russia hacking our elections going forth.
Has it really come to this, GOPs not caring about Russia hacking our elections as long as their guy is president?

I know YOU are not doing this man. I just saw your name and felt comfortable venting to you.
I didn't mean to come off gas-lighting you. Sorry.

Imagine if Comey hadn't interfered so late with his October Surprise.
Clinton would have been impeached last year by Chaffetz and Ryan.
McConnell would have frozen the Senate to force her to resign.
Would Ryan and McConnell have blocked a President Kaine? We'll never know.

This is the worst interference I've seen since Nixon's handiwork during the 1968 election.
LBJ should have nailed his ass.
Reagan and voodoo Bush did the same thing to Carter.
I'd say GHWB was the head of the so-called 'deep state', as we hear it discussed, during his day .
