Rick Gates attorneys seek to withdraw from case

(CNN)The trial attorneys who want to stop representing former Trump campaign aide Rick Gates will be in court Wednesday for a private hearing about their reasons for withdrawing, a federal judge said Friday.

Gates' attorneys, Walter Mack, Shanlon Wu and Annemarie McAvoy, told the court late Thursday they wanted to withdraw from the case immediately.

They provided a reason to the court under seal. Mack, one of the now-former attorneys for Gates, declined to comment Thursday.

Gates pleaded not guilty in October to eight charges of money laundering and failing to register foreign lobbying and other business. His longtime business partner, former Trump campaign chair Paul Manafort, pleaded not guilty to nine counts in the same case as Gates.

Re: Exclusive: New signs Gates may be negotiating with Mueller's team

Former Trump campaign aide Rick Gates has quietly added a prominent white-collar attorney, Tom Green, to his defense team, signaling that Gates' approach to his not-guilty plea could be changing behind the scenes.
Green, a well-known Washington defense lawyer, was seen at special counsel Robert Mueller's office twice last week. CNN is told by a source familiar with the matter that Green has joined Gates' team.
Green isn't listed in the court record as a lawyer in the case and works for a large law firm separate from Gates' primary lawyers.

Green's involvement suggests that there is an ongoing negotiation between the defendant's team and the prosecutors. At this stage, with Gates' charges filed and bail set, talks could concern the charges and Gates' plea. The defense and prosecution are currently working together on discovery of evidence.

Looks like Gates is flipping now, too. So that's Gates, Manafort and Flynn so far.

Another fish in the net.

Re: Exclusive: New signs Gates may be negotiating with Mueller's team

Oh they're sooooooo ****ed. Probably won't be another year before we see any signs of a complete Trump Administration collapse though...

Maybe they know for a fact that their client is caught hook, line and sinker in something that is undefensible.

Seems like most attorneys go down with the ship and cash their checks afterwards. Maybe Gates is just broke.

One possibility is that Gates flips on Manafort.

Manafort was apart of the Trump Tower meeting with the Russians, so it's likely he knows more about that meeting than what has been publicly admitted by all parties.

I won't go into all of the details, but at the center of Natalia Veselnitskaya motives, was a desire to help Russian oligarchs launder their money, and have a high profile investigation in NY led by Bharah dismissed -- which coincidence would have it, is precisely what happened once Trump became president.

Mueller wants more information about that meeting, and since Manafort has open legal issues that could send him to jail for decades, they no doubt will want to flip him IF he has any valuable information.

The path for that might just be getting Gates to flip on Manafort first.

Yeah-- Gates is out of money. That would spook any lawyer.

Or all the money Gates has is dirty.

Don't forget, these buffoons (Manafort and Gates) were pretty blatant in their bankruptcy fraud and money laundering, it's pretty much one of the easiest fraud cases ever.

these are the most preposterous political times i've ever seen. our president's campaign manager, indicted for laundering money for the country our president is accused of being in bed with. talk about bad optics.

Yes, this would seem to indicate there's reasonable chance Gates will, or has, accepted a plea. We shall see.

Also Mark Corallo, Trump's legal spokesmen, was reported by the NYT as flipping on Trump, and is willing to testify. Apparently Hope Hicks told Trump during the AirForceOne meeting, where they concocted the false narrative for the Trump Towers Russia meeting, that she said that the Don Jr. emails never would get released. It would seem Corallo is attempting to deliver an obstruction charge against Hicks, ostensibly to save his ass for his assisting in drafting the fake memo. The crucial item here of course, is that Hicks can attest to Trump's possible obstruction during the plane meeting (as can Corallo).

Current status: Hicks was interviewed by Mueller in December. Corallo is scheduled (apparently at Corallo's desire), in the next several weeks.

The Gates possible flip is also very interesting, in that he remained onboard with Trump's campaign & administration long after Manafort, until Jun of 2017. He traveled with Trump, and was part of the inner circle.

So, it looks like we've got Gates & Corallo flipping, and Hicks caught in a jam. With further both Hicks & Corallo being present & advising the President on the plane, while he crafted the false statement concerning Jr.'s meeting with the Russians.

It was a huge week for the Mueller investigation, but the Nune's memo overshadowed virtually everything. I suspect that is going to be the strategy going forward.

Yes, it appears that Gates has hired an attorney known for negotiating plea deals, and that is the cause of his legal team quitting. Which means that he's in the process of flipping like Manafort and Flynn.

Re: Exclusive: New signs Gates may be negotiating with Mueller's team

Maybe they know for a fact that their client is caught hook, line and sinker in something that is undefensible.

The judge won't let him withdraw over that and he can't tell a judge, "He's guilty as ****...I'm out". He would be disbarred for that.

Not to mention the illegal investigation that caught him. I wouldn't be surprised if the charges against Manafort, Gates and Flynn were dropped.

Why would a Federal Judge be saying anything about an ongoing case especially when it was provided under seal?

This whole Trump fiasco is a convoluted mess. I don't even know who all the players are anymore.

- Trump declares that he is no longer interested in "lock her up" after elected.
- Trump loads his Cabinet with people of "good character" who are are mostly lobbyists, career politicians, and wall street insiders (swamp folk).
- Trump's Cabinet members start to get shifted around, they quit, or they are fired.
- Bannon starts denigrating the Trump clan because his feelings are hurt.
- The CIA declares that Russian meddling took place during the campaign
- Trump comes under investigation
- Trump's people start going down
- Trump declares that the CIA is dumb and that the FBI is in tatters.
- Trump tries to have the investigation killed
- Trump declares that Putin said that he didn't do anything so we should move on.
- Trump is all of a sudden interested in Clinton again and demands that Clinton be investigated too while dropping arbitrary "build a wall" comments.
- More of Trump's people go down
- Somebody writes a book that shows Trump's Cabinet full of "good characters" are back stabbers and think little of him
- Republicans and Conservatives dismiss any and everything as fake news.
- Putin declares "oh yeah?...well the U.S. meddled in Russian affairs too"
- The GOP releases a memo declaring that Democrats are just being meanies.
- Something is going on with this Rick Gates fella now.

Good grief. Maybe somebody will make a movie out of all this one day.

Shouldn't this thread be in the CT forum? I mean, all it does is leave the door for massive speculation.

Re: Exclusive: New signs Gates may be negotiating with Mueller's team

Actually it's considered to be a very bad trait for a defense attorney to be someone who bails when it looks bad. Good luck finding new clients when you are known to jump ship when it looks bad.

It's much more likely that Gates has turned and agreed to cooperate with the investigation. Or that Gates decided they weren't doing a good job.

If they did quit the case, I would think the reasoning would much more likely be that they found that their client was lying to them so they couldn't defend him properly more so than that the case just started to look bad.

Far too complex. Perhaps a 5-part TV mini-series. No commercials. Show one segment a night, in chronological order, with a continuing cast of the same actors/actresses.

looks to me like maybe the Reince Priebus "nothing burger" is turning into a giant 'fish fry' with Trump being the guest of honor  .........
