Parabellum auto:
Remove magazine/clip
Eject cartridge from chamber
Lock slide to rear to visually and physically confirm there is no magazine/clip and an empty chamber
Leave the slide open while performing any cleaning/modification action

Revolver:
Work the cylinder latch to open the cylinder
Empty the cylinder
Check each individual chamber to be sure it’s empty
Leave the cylinder open when cleaning/modifying the weapon

The fact he was probably well experienced in firearms, yeah I would definitely nominate him for the award.

What I find interesting is how various news organizations report it. Most just say 'shot himself cleaining his gun'. zerohedge says 'Mysteriously shot' and makes all kinds of CT theory side remarks.

The only part of this that makes the accident part of it sound plausible is that it took him 3 weeks to die from the wound. Which could mean it wasn’t aimed. Of course that could also be caused from anticipating the shot and jerking one’s hand at the last moment. But I think homicide is unlikely given those circumstances. Accident or attempted suicide seem equally plausible to me.
