Washington (CNN)Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer withdrew funding for President Donald Trump's border in negotiations over immigration issues with the White House, according to a Democratic aide.

A staffer who works for Schumer called the White House on Monday and said the proposal, which Schumer put on the table during a Friday meeting with Trump, was no longer operative, the aide said.

Politico first reported that Schumer had taken the wall funding off the negotiating table.

Have you read this yet?? It will get nasty as hell. Thing is Ryan stated he would not bring a Bill to the floor without majority of the majority party support from the Caucus (Hastert Rule) - if he does and it passes, the Senate will chop it up, and send it back

Well, he's right. The Dems have to get something in return for the wall funding. That's how negotiations work. If they get DACA then it's a win win for both sides. At least he isn't asking for full immigration reform in the next 6 weeks.

This is going to get ugly. I can see it coming.
 
Sounds good to me. I think the wall is nonsense, but if Trump wants it so bad make sure you get something for it.

This has been my stance from the get go.....give money so Trump can go build is "big great awesome wall" in order to pass DACA. They are eventually going to get that 15 billion somehow so at least get something for it.

Schumer is a goof. First....you cant offer what you dont have. Second...this smacks of him desperately trying to find his testicles after this last debacle. Third...if Schumer uses this to shut down the country...again...the democrats are going to get shellacked.

This is not how you govern. It damn sure isnt how you negotiate.

No DACA, no to Wall funding. DACA legislation, yes to Wall funding.

Even someone with a two minute attention span like Trump should be able to process that.

My sense is that progressives gave Schumer a lot of grief over allowing the open to open up. I think this is nothing more than face saving about that.

The fact that Daca is tied to border security and chain migration is nothing new IMHO.

I believe this may be Schumer's reaction to his base eating him alive for agreeing to the deal yesterday. I have no opinion on whether or not either were strategically intelligent moves -- there are simply too many pieces in motion.

Yes, but with this WH and GOP Congress, it's become customary for them to be of the position that they receive everything they want in a negotiation, and then consider whether the Democrats get anything out of it.

One party shouldn't be able to threaten the withdraw of funding for popular social programs that already exist, in exchange for the other party supporting their new agenda items. That party shouldn't get jack-squat for their hostage games, they should be shamed publicly until they stop, and should not be negotiated with at all. When the Democrats participate in these games, they only further encourage them down the road -- each time being more reprehensible than the last -- teaching Republicans that the ends will justify the means.
 
Wall, chain migration, and visa lottery ended first with full apropiation, or pound sand....

How well did it work for him last time? And how smart is it to 'renege' on something you have already expressed a willingness to work on?

Nah...not very bright.

A deal needs to be done...for both the budget and for immigration. If Schumer was smart, he would have assigned a lead on immigration and focused on the budget.

The shutdown was done to take away attention from the one year anniversary of the Trump Presidency. They didn't want to see any victory laps.


All the GOP and Trump have to do is stand firm with funding for the wall. Any further shutdowns will again be a case of the Democrats are putting the priorities of ILLEGAL ALIENS ahead of the American citizen.

You couldn't ask for a better position to be in if you're the GOP.

BUT

I'm sure they'll **** it up somehow.

The promise of protection for DACA was nebulous at best. "We will get our wall, and in return we will consider the possibility of giving you DACA in the future." It's understandable if this was treated with some skepticism.

I'm curious, so what exactly is the "smart" move for Schumer here? To give a thumbs up on funding for the border wall with promises that Republicans will get around to passing DACA legislation?
