McConnell offers an olive branch to re-open the government, but will it be enough?

WASHINGTON — GOP Majority Leader Mitch McConnell took to the Senate floor Monday to offer an olive branch to Democrats. But it still wasn't clear if it would be enough to win a vote to re-open the government.

"So long as the government remains open — it would be my intention to take up legislation here in the Senate that would address DACA, border security and related issues as well as disaster relief, defense funding, health care and other important matters," the Kentucky Republican said on the Senate floor.
Now how will this go? I have no idea - to many diverging opinions- no trust.

Ask GOP Senator Susan Collins how trustworthy McConnell's 'intentions' are.

What ever happens, they need a comprehensive deal that ends the issue... Implement a pathway to citizenship/greencard for DACA members... and stop illegal immigration... and if they are too unreasonable... I would continue the shutdown for months...

The distrust is not so much with the Senate Majority Leader, it's with the President.
The Democrats and the people of the United States don't know what the President is willing to sign. It changes by the hour.
And the only recourse that the Democrats have is to present DACA on every occasion where 60 votes is required, to try to save the Dreamers from being deported.
And if the Republicans TRULY cared as much about the military as they say, they would vote in the Nuclear Option with a simple majority and pass a real budget, not a CR, just like the President has asked for.

This is an illusory promise. It really makes no difference if the Senate brings up these issues if the House doesn’t. That’s been the death of several bills including the last immigration bill passed.

Whether you believe that Democrats should or shouldn’t have allowed this shutdown in the first place, it makes no sense for their votes to turn on this promise.

Progress? I hope so. I'm tired of this madness already.

Yes, I am with you on that. It has the offer of negotiation on the other issues. And if it fails, with either side digging their heels in, we are back to another closure.
Bother parties, the Gang of 6, IIRC, they have a good idea of what can pass, and what is BS.
From what I gather Schumer on Friday offered up money for the wall. I think funds for border security are needed, but a wall in some areas ain't worth the money. In other areas it will pay dividends.

DACA has wide bipartisan support. Still one hell of a problem the US has with illegal immigration. As a Canadian I know I would not like it if that was happening here and going on for decades with politicians refusing to act.
Last evening I was informed that this problem has been ongoing and rampant since at least 86 or so.
But politicians keep on kicking the can down the road.

Why not deal with DACA now and be done with it since the clock is ticking down on that program fast. The rest can be dealt with during the year.

I'm sure those on the CHIP program thank you for your concern about their ability to not receive funds now while DACA still has over a month before it too is ended.

The only discernible effort at negotiation is in the Senate. The House is perfectly intransigent and trump not only doesn't know what he wants, he's clearly enjoying the hell out of this. We're not close to re-opening unless the key dynamics change.

I mean how many Republicans on this message board even take Mitch McConnell's vague verbal promises at face value?

 what an ignorant post. Didn't the house pass a CR? they did there job. Do you not blame the democrats at all?

And I am sure the military appreciates your boy refusing to continue their pay while they figure out how to pass a Bill. Actually CHIP is still being paid out, through the States, for the moment, unlike the military. You were saying?????????

The House(Republicans) passed a Bill that they knew the Senate would not pass, so they did a half-arsed job.

Then another shut down. But if that happens as you laid out, who then wears it? Going to be an interesting 2 1/2 weeks, if the bill passes.

No trust with the other party- Dems want certain things- Repubs want certain things. Have them act like adults and get the deals, dirty or not done, and start ffn governing.
Sorry for the rant - not directed at you.

A bill will be passed and in the end both sides will claim a victory and DACA will be addressed.

Why should I? Trump just called the Democrats "powerless." How can you blame Democrats when they're powerless? Seems to me that if you want to blame the side responsible for a shutdown, you would look to the one that has power.

I agree, we as voters need to start holding our Reps accountable, well in a perfect world we would, unfortunately for too many it is all about Party over Nation.

So you as a dutiful partisan, absolve democrats while blaming republicans for a shutdown, but hypocritically blame the republicans for shutting it down in 2013. does your cognitive dissonance bother you at all? your hypocrisy eat at you at all? Probably not.

Unfortunately, I don't see any practical way of addressing DACA and CHIP without making them conditions of the spending bill.

If the government is shut down, there won't be any agents to deport any DACA kids. Very clever strategy.

As your dear leader said, Democrats are "powerless." No need to blame them for anything.
