Who cares?

I seem to recall the government has been "shut down" a few times over the course of my lifetime. No skin off my nose.

We overspend anyway.

The Dems blame the Republicans and always point to Defense spending.

The Reps blame the Democrats for all the social welfare programs and "arts" spending.

They both make a mess of it. So shut it down. Big deal. :coffeepap:

And what stops the government from defaulting on its debts, if it shuts down?

Unified GOP control of government has been a total farce.

Nothing much...except that it just means heavy penalties when the Congress get's it head of out it's collective rectum and passes a spending bill.

Meanwhile:

Actually, the United States Has Defaulted Before...The United States defaulted on some Treasury bills in 1979 (ht:*Jason Zweig). And it paid a steep price for stiffing bondholders...The United States thus defaulted because Treasury’s back office was on the fritz in the wake of a debt limit showdown.

That means when a spending bill is passed the government does it's magical "borrow the imaginary money from the Federal Reserve to create funds and pay off the debt" when the government starts up again. Like always.

Yeppers, our credit rating took a nosedive last time when Boehner presided over a shutdown.

Now if we can just leave it that way. Lol

Do you people really believe the government has shut down? The military is suddenly inoperable?

Please. This is just political grandstanding BS.

Thanks a lot, Chuck!!!!

Trump owns the House and the Senate.
Under his supreme negotiating skills, we have a shut down government.

Wow. What a colossal loser !

Skill at deal-making was literally the one thing he was supposed to be bringing to the table. The incompetence here is staggering.

Yawn.

This is a nothing burger. The government has shut-down several times in the past.

Wake me up when something actually happens.

I have two short videos for you regarding the OMB press conference on 01/19/17.

Each is less that 2 minutes long. They might be informative about the politics of this "shut down."

Video #1: Obama "weaponized" the shut down option in 2013; but even then funds were (as they are now) available to carry on for a time.

and Video #2: Chuck Schumer and the Dems support all the spending bill...but they refuse to vote simply because of DACA.

As the OMB Director states truthfully, there is nothing about DACA in this spending bill, it is a non-issue. Yet the Dems refuse to vote for it.

Who is at fault?

I'm with you. Too many times, the media made a big deal about it and no harm came.

CNN... The Chicken-Little Nugget Network....

The government shutdown only affects agencies and employees that are funded through annual appropriations. But that doesn't apply to members of Congress. Salaries for members of the House and Senate are written into permanent law. (Members in both chambers currently make $174,000 a year.) That's why politicians get paid even in the event that Congress can't agree on a bill to fund the government.

Oh thank god.

WTH????

Transcript from your linked video:

Rep. Steny Hoyer[D]: Madam Speaker, I believe we aught to stay here and do our work.

[applause]

Rep. Steny Hoyer[D]: And I believe we aught to vote to do so. And therefor I will vote no

[gavel bangs]

Speaker: Does the Gentleman have a motion?

Rep. Steny Hoyer[D]: I have a motion. And that motion is...

Speaker: What is his motion.

Rep. Steny Hoyer[D]: And the motion is that the house do now adjourn.

[Laughter]

Seriously? SERIOUSLY? How can someone be so hypocritical in 27 seconds? Look to your linked video to find out.

I know Democrats love to flip on their positions, but that had to be a record.

No, no, this is an old tradition! When a new business leader is installed, it is customary to close the business for a few days in honor of the one year mark. :2razz:

True the military will continue to serve, for now, but even they have limits and if this were to go on long enough we may find it.
