Federal government shuts down after Senate talks fail

Unified GOP control of government has been a total farce.

You need 60 votes to proceed to a floor vote. Democrats vote 42-6 against bringing it to a floor vote. Republicans voted 47-4 in favor of a floor vote. This is a Democrat shutdown.

And why did they do it? Because they wanted a DACA amendment. They turned down the biggest extension of CHIP in the program's history because of frigging DACA. They apparently don't want to win in 2018.

Is this the part where Trump files bankruptcy, and leaves?

Who cares?

I seem to recall the government has been "shut down" a few times over the course of my lifetime. No skin off my nose.

We overspend anyway.

The Dems blame the Republicans and always point to Defense spending.

The Reps blame the Democrats for all the social welfare programs and "arts" spending.

They both make a mess of it. So shut it down. Big deal. :coffeepap:

We spend too much on defense, but that's what we do. If you're going to operate a world wide empire, you need a world wide military.

We spend too inefficiently on social welfare, but that's what we do. There are efficiencies to be found in public/private partnerships that the zealots on both sides block.

I don't know why the USA spends anything on the arts. This is even more stupid than forcing schools to shut down the pizza buffet in the school cafeterias.

Skill at deal-making was literally the one thing he was supposed to be bringing to the table. The incompetence here is staggering.

Total bull****. The dems don't want negotiation, they want capitulation. This is 100% on Shumer and the democrats. That you don't see that is what is 'staggering.'

This was the result of the Democrats refusing to reach a compromise and refusing to fund CHIP.

This has NOTHING to do with the Reps.

Democrats have just proven that they care more about those here illegally than they do about American citizens

Trump owns the House and the Senate.
Under his supreme negotiating skills, we have a shut down government.

Wow. What a colossal loser !

The Republicans have been working against Trump since he rode the escalator down to announce he was going to run.

All the Repubs had to do was deal with DACA and everything would have been approved, hence it was the Repubs choice, they knew this from day 1, to claim otherwise is a Lie.

WHY did the Democrats refuse to talk?

What was in the bill that the Democrats oppose?

WHY did Durbin think that making his error filled poop-hole statement was a good idea?

WHO is benefitting from this government shut down?

What good thing is going to rise from this grandstanding?

caring about 100% of the dependents brings you more sympathy votes than caring about 55% of the citizens.

Deal with it at what level?

At what compromise?

Do you think this hasn't been part of the process?

Every culturally advanced society gives public support to the arts, which are the highest expression of its culture. If this support is withering under Trump, as it seems to be, it's probably because Trump himself is a cultural pig.

It doesn't need to be a separate tax like it is in Portlandia. Or a stupid mandate that 1% of new building construction cost is for art.

Leave it to the Crapitaol of the North-Left coast...

What part of this funding bill had anything to do with DACA?

Oh right...nothing. There was nothing in this funding bill that Democrats opposed. The only reason that they are refusing to vote in the funding bill is because of an outside issue. One that has nothing to do with funding the country. What Democrats ended up doing is proving that they would rather fight for 700k illegal aliens than 9 million American Citizens. Trust me...this is NOT going to go the way that you think it is.

Yep, the democrats are 100% to blame for the shutdown. The DACA still has two months before it needs renewal.

As long as there is no skin off YOUR nose that is the criteria? My goodness what an altruistic person you are!

I have two short videos for you regarding the OMB press conference on 01/19/17.

Each is less that 2 minutes long. They might be informative about the politics of this "shut down."

Video #1: Obama "weaponized" the shut down option in 2013; but even then funds were (as they are now) available to carry on for a time.

and Video #2: Chuck Schumer and the Dems support all the spending bill...but they refuse to vote simply because of DACA.

As the OMB Director states truthfully, there is nothing about DACA in this spending bill, it is a non-issue. Yet the Dems refuse to vote for it.

Who is at fault?

I knew it I knew! It was Obama's fault! That didn't take long!

Do you really believe that republicants will refuse to cave on DACA? Those slime balls are busy drafting DACA as we speak because polls and Trump know that it is currently popular (a must do thing). Sure, the republicants will add this and that to "their" DACA bill (claiming it to be immigration reform - titled as something other than DACA) but a DACA bill (coverting up to 25% of current "illegal" immigrants to legal status) will be passed with few, if any, major strings attached and the demorats know this to be true.

I'm with you. Too many times, the media made a big deal about it and no harm came.

CNN... The Chicken-Little Nugget Network....

Or I will be one of those the boy who cried wolf things.

I believe our credit rating was downgraded last time this happened? Not sure that is nothing as it ends up costing us more.

And these incompetents couldn't get 60, could they? Hence their astounding inability to keep their own government open.

You're going to run with the narrative that the Dems oppose funding CHIP? After the GOP Congress let its funding lapse for the first time in its history months ago so they could dangle those kids' health as a bargaining chip the following year? Disgusting.
