They haven't executed for espionage in a long time. I can see it happening to this guy though with him having helped the Chinese find and execute American agents and allies.

Arrested Former C.I.A. Officer Had Ties to Chinese Spies, Ex-Colleague Says

Jerry Chun Shing Lee, the former C.I.A. officer arrested this week in New York, had repeated contacts with Chinese intelligence, both on an official basis while working for the agency in Beijing and afterward under circumstances his business associates found deeply suspicious, according to a former colleague who worked closely with him.

The destruction by Chinese security agencies of the C.I.A.’s operations inside the country, including the imprisonment or execution of a dozen Chinese nationals secretly working for the United States, is considered one of the most devastating intelligence setbacks for the agency in recent decades. With Mr. Lee’s arrest and the continuing investigation, inquiries at the C.I.A. and the F.B.I. into how it unfolded and what mistakes were made are likely to go on for years.

All because he was a disgruntled employee.

By 2007, he was growing frustrated by his lack of advancement and decided to leave the agency. He was hired by Japan Tobacco International and joined that company’s team of investigators who tracked cigarette smuggling and counterfeiting.

That is usually the reason intelligence officers turn coat. Sure, money is usually involved but rarely is that the only or even the primary factor.

There's no way I'm willing to believe that it's really been the Chinese who are the threats to American national security!!! Despite all the hacking, stealing of intellectual property, stealing millions of government employee records, and currency manipulation it's got to have been the Russians! Could the Russians have framed this innocent American citizen on behalf of Trump as a deflection?

Certainly was the case with Robert Hanssen.

If you ever get the chance, watch the film "Breach," starring Chris Cooper and Ryan Phillippe, about Hanssen. Dramatized, to be sure, but also a really good watch.

We only know about spies on the rare occassion that they get caught.

You seem quite unaware of how things work.

And that's fun.

Heh. We actually watched that as part of our annual counter-intelligence training when I was worked at the US embassy in Indonesia. I felt like I was in high school when the teacher puts a movies on because she was battling a hangover that day. Good movie, though. :)

It wasn't bad, but it wasn't good. They could have used an actor who could act in the Ryan Phillippe role. Cooper as Hanssen was terrific. But good to know some things don't change from junior high to spook school lol

Since the Rosenbergs, i believe.

I recommend the book Spy Handler. Written by the KGB officer who flipped Hansen and Ames. Really great book and an insight into espionage.
