The 13-year-old student, Nathan Bell, was chatting with his friends at Mason Middle School in Mason, Ohio, about 25 miles north of Cincinnati, on Dec. 4 when his social studies teacher became frustrated, his mother, Tanisha Agee-Bell, said in a phone interview on Sunday.

The teacher told Nathan, who was the only black student in the class, that “if he didn’t get back on task, then his friends were going to form an angry mob and lynch him,” Ms. Agee-Bell said. Nathan responded that her comment was racist, and the teacher, Renee Thole, “kept asking him why,” Ms. Agee-Bell said.

“Her job is to teach American history to eighth graders,” Ms. Agee-Bell said. “How can you teach American history and you don’t understand the impact of your words to your students, given our nation’s history?”
If true, should she be teaching?
Further training?
What?

IMO; it doesn't rise to the level that a 22 year teacher with no priors should lose her job over it. The punishment she is getting fits the crime.

Are you kidding me? Why should a teacher, of history no less, require additional (basic thinking?) training and paid leave? That means paying the "undertrained" teacher, a replacement for that teacher and the costs of the added training. Better to say bye-bye here is your final paycheck and best of luck in finding a new job.

A reprimand is enough. This isn't Nazi Germany.

We don't know the punishment yet. "On leave" doesn't mean she's coming back it just means the school board is discussing their decision.

I'm not sure the comment is so heinous it rises to the level of a fire-able offense, but the stupidity involved does. You're right.

Ah, so the teacher is a DP troll, then.

Then why the paid leave and training? Those in charge thought it best to maximize the cost to taxpayers over this matter - essentially thumbing their nose to the taxpayers in protest over having to do anything at all.

Fewer drama queens would be a good start. More discipline in the home and the school would be good, too.

In the home?? What are you talking about?

Whenever I didn't act right in school, I got my ass tore up when I got home. I bet this boy hasn't had any discipline at home.

The issue is with the teacher, not the boy. Pay attention.

Certainly not a History teacher! The discipline is warranted and is fair, imo.

She is as dumb as a rock. I guess 22 years of teaching she would be around 40 +/- or so. Yet did not consider what she said as racist. Clearly need a ton of history lessons. But yes, appropriate punishment.
Kudos to the student who handled this better than most at that age.

The issue is with the boy and his mother. He isn’t doing the homework and dragging down the grades of his classmates in group assignments because of that. But the mother is mad at the teacher for chastising him for it in front of the class and saying classmates will want to lynch him for hurting their scores because he won’t do the work. There’s nothing wrong with the teacher. There is something wrong with a lazy student and even lazier parent.

Seriously. What she said was hardly overtly racist. Let's not reward oversensitivity when the teacher is trying to motivate a troubled student to do his work. It's the tyranny of the most easily offended.

Can I ask where you got that info? I didn't see it in the OP link.
