Good for WalMart!

MAGA!

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Walmart Stores Inc said on Thursday it would raise entry-level wages for hourly employees to $11 an hour as it benefits from the biggest overhaul of the U.S. tax code in 30 years.

The world’s largest retailer said the increase would take effect in February and that it would also expand maternity and parental leave benefits and offer a one-time cash bonus, based on length of service, of up to $1,000.

The pay increase and bonus will benefit more than 1 million U.S. hourly workers, it said.

Taxes go down by over 30% so (only the bottom?) wages go up by 10%. My hunch is that the tax law change had less to do with this than the drop in the unemployment rate. An employer must pay enough to attract and retain qualified labor - when the labor market tightens wages tend go up even without any tax rate changes.

Re: WalMart uses tax cuts to raise minimum wage to $11/hr with $1 bonuses

The last time they said that they were going to raise wages, it didn't happen. My wife is still waiting for her raise... I trust WM less than I trust the gov't.

What are you talking about Walmart did raise wages last time they said they would.

My wife never saw a dime of that, neither did anyone else in the store she works in. They did increase the starting wage in areas with lower MW, but for most WM employees, there was no wage increase. WM also did away with performance based raises at the same time and changed the rules on COLA to offset the starting wages. Then they changed how they pay out safety bonuses so that if ANYONE (customer or employee) gets hurt in the store (even if it was caused by nothing the store could control like the customer who passed out due to low blood sugar which cause my wife's store to lose their last bonus), there's no bonus paid out. WM made a big public statement, then changed the rules on how it would be applied and then added in changes that offset that increase even more.

Literally none of the bolded is true.

Everyone who didn’t get the pay raise still got a 2% pay raise or a pay out if they were capped. And yes performance raises were replaced by annual raises, but for the hourly supervisors they will be back this year.

Re: WalMart uses tax cuts to raise minimum wage to $11/hr with $1 bonuses

More bribery from the companies to get stupid people to say "see, we are giving it back to the people". Like those bogus $1000 bonuses when the top dogs are going to be raking in millions.

And $11 an hour, oh wow, that's going to make their employees rich. Maybe they can get off food stamps or welfare now.

Why do some people continue to believe the BS they have been fed that tax cuts trickle down. 40 years of the money going only to the top, the poverty rates going up, the massive increase in wealth of the top 1%, there workers struggling while they are making record profits should be all the proof you need

But no, keep buying the propaganda the rich are selling you while the f you in the a and rob this country

Re: WalMart uses tax cuts to raise minimum wage to $11/hr with $1 bonuses

mighty white of them Costco has been at a starting pay of $15 for years, Amazon has been at a starting pay of nearly $13.......please save me from the applauds of them raising pay to $11 because of the stupid tax cuts.

Nearly a million people are going to get a raise in salary on top of a nice bonus check and you still find something to bitch about. Good grief.

Re: WalMart uses tax cuts to raise minimum wage to $11/hr with $1 bonuses

Interesting... Two things of note there.

  1. Story was written back on 11/19/2013
  2. "The company pays a living wage. Costco’s CEO and president, Craig Jelinek, has publicly endorsed raising the federal minimum wage to $10.10 an hour, and he takes that to heart. The company’s starting pay is $11.50 per hour, and the average employee wage is $21 per hour, not including overtime. Most other big box retailers start their employees at minimum wage."

You lied again.

Only certain jobs at Costco pay more than $15.00 an hour, And Amazon only starts at 13.00 an hour on certain jobs. Last updated from Glassdoor of January 7.

That was the EXACT scenario that played out this quarter att eh store my wife works at. A CUSTOMER collapsed due to low blood sugar and they were informed that that incident took down the safety bonus fund to 0, so no quarterly bonus checks.

My wife has worked at WM for 10 years and she didn't see one red cent of a raise following the last failed promise. She also lost her incentive raise (which she always got because she the best at her job in the whole market).

Re: WalMart uses tax cuts to raise minimum wage to $11/hr with $1 bonuses

Maybe if they reduce the corporate rate to zero. Then they'll pay....$2 more!

Honestly, some people are so easily played. There are a handful of corporations paying workers a little more. The cost of doing so is jack **** compared to the increased profits they can expect from the tax cut.

Give them a dollar, they spend a penny, and the usual suspects cheer.

Yep- You hit the nail on the head.
The marketplace is short of mid-skill- highly skilled & unskilled labor in many areas. Rural areas where old manufactiuring and such closed up years ago, many would jump at 11 an hr.

Such collectivist thinking. No matter what happens you and your ilk will **** upon it. I mean really, they got a huge raise and you all throw a tantrum over it. First you said they wouldn't give anything to employees, then they do, then you whine it's not enough. It's really a sad display to watch,.

And they are still going to live in poverty because they make garbage wages. $11 an hour is a joke, in many places you can't live on that, and you most certainly can't save for any sort of retirement. What happens when all these people who barely make enough to survive get old with no savings, nothing? What a drain that is going to be.

Oh, and a small pittance of a pay increase for the richest company owned by the richest people in the country, where there workers have to supplement their pay with food stamps and welfare. Talk about good grief.

I can't believe how brainwashed so many of you are to just blindly worship these greedy, rich a holes that are taking all the money in this country. They could not take any more money for the rest of their lives and live lavishly for generations.

With this type of ridiculous mentality, you'd probably say slaves should be grateful that their masters are providing them food and a roof over their heads

Which is exactly what Republicans argue.

Walmart did raise the starting wage up to $10.00 per hour. If you your wife makes more than that, she wouldn't have gotten a raise.

Just like the left to complain about getting $1,000 just because someone else got more. Don't forget that that is $1,000 times a whole bunch of employees.

Jealousy. Pure jealousy. In case you forgot, minimum wage is $7.25 per hour so the companies are doing far more than they have to. They should be applauded.
