Christians believe they are being persecuted. So, I've noticed they rejoice and celebrate whenever the government makes strides to protect their religion. Rather than just being cool, as they are in no danger of losing their religion. They celebrate when the government takes shots against the 'secular left'. It's ironic considering most Christians are supposed 'small government' conservatives. But, not whenever too much freedom violates some bylaw of their religion.

My whole family on my mom's side is pretty conservative christian. And you should hear the way they even pronounce the phrase, "the left"

it's like it makes them feel icky to even say it, lol.

I've un-friended half my "friends" and family on Facebook because they no longer seem to see a difference between the GOP and Christianity. In their reality if I object to a religious policy or action then I am attacked for being anti-American, unpatriotic and hating democracy. If I object to a GOP position, policy or action I am attacked as being anti-Christian, a religious persecutor, an atheist as well as for being anti-American, unpatriotic and hating democracy.

At this point I don't know that rational members of the GOP are able to wrestle control away from the Christian GOP. I have read that evangelicals have identified evangelical extremists as a problem. There appears to be a move afoot by evangelicals to make a clear separation between themselves and extremist evangelicals. Seem the idea is that extremist evangelicals have ruined the image of standard evangelicals and the plan is to let the extremists keep the name "evangelical" while real evangelicals rebrand.

Between mainstream GOP and wild assed crazies of different stripes who have taken over the party and between evangelicals and mouth foaming evangelical extremists it's all screwed up. They are all mixed in together and not much of any of the rest of us knows who's who. But if you disagree with a policy or position you will invariably be attacked as a godless communist who hates America and Jesus.

Many mainstream members of the GOP and many mainstream Christians who don't always agree with the party or the faith do not have a voice.

I would be more than a little concerned were he to be the next president. Who knows where his Christian beliefs could lead the country? Like this one:

The Employment Non-Discrimination Act would have banned discrimination against people based on sexual orientation. Pence voted against that law in 2007 and later said the law “wages war on freedom and religion in the workplace.”
