Republican Attacks on Mueller and F.B.I. Open New Rift in G.O.P.

NYTimes - Republican Attacks on Mueller and F.B.I. Open New Rift in G.O.P.

WASHINGTON By NICHOLAS FANDOSDEC. 30, 2017 — A growing campaign by President Trump’s most ardent supporters to discredit the special counsel, Robert S. Mueller III, and the law enforcement agencies assisting his investigation is opening new fissures in the Republican Party, with some lawmakers questioning the damage being done to federal law enforcement and to a political party that has long championed law and order.

A small but vocal group of conservative lawmakers, much of the conservative media and, at times, the president himself have launched a series of attacks to paint not only Mr. Mueller but institutions once considered sacrosanct to Republicans like the F.B.I. and Justice Department as dangerously biased against Mr. Trump. One of them, Representative Francis Rooney of Florida, called on Tuesday for top F.B.I. and Justice Department officials to be “purged.”

Now some Republican lawmakers are speaking out, worried that Trump loyalists, hoping for short-term gain, could wind up staining the party, dampening morale at the F.B.I. and Justice Department, and potentially recasting Democrats as the true friends of law enforcement for years to come.
The Democrats have a long way to go before they will get love the law enforcement community at large. The damage they did in vilifying cops as racists murderers will not be forgotten for a very long time. However, with Trump and his allies in Congress constantly assaulting the DOJ and FBI as incompetent and corrupt, all Democratic lawmakers need to do is sit back, verbally support federal law enforcement, and vote for the DOJ budget request and the Republicans will find themselves out of the circle in years to come.
Trump Derangement Syndrome, or TDS, affects millions of right wing Americans. Symptoms include frequent use of "whataboutisms," irrational rants about how the DNC, GOP, MSM, FBI, NSA, CIA, and FB are all conspiring to get Trump, blaming Obama and/or Clinton for things Trump has done or is doing, and a bizarre admiration for Vladimir Putin. Known TDS vectors are Fox News and the @RealDonaltTrump twitter feed.

This sudden turn of the White House to attack the integrity of the FBI clearly illustrates just how frightened they are. If they had done nothing wrong they would not now be changing horses in mid stream. They are desperate and there is definitely desperation in the ranks.
Frankly destroying a national institution to prop up a Shylock, womanizing fraud is just about the most stupid America has gotten. And there's a lot of stupid in there.

You don't feel like a pawn? Just echoing the latest White House propaganda strategy?

I agree completely. This is Trump and Co.'s M.O. and it will not change. If they sense any criticism or chance their covers are about to be pulled back, they launch the attack. And like Pavlov's dog, the base joins in. It's madness. All Trump (and Fox) have to do is say "bad" and point a finger at someone or something and herd moves on them.

Me personally? No, not at all.

Re: Republican Attacks on Mueller and F.B.I. Open New Rift in G.O.P.

I guess it is inconceivable for some to admit that the White House, and others, might have a legitimate point about FBI and DOJ competence, corruption and political bias as illustrated in the recent revelations of conflicts of interest and political bias.

Inconceivable that the same organizations (and pretty much the same people) that handled (mis-handling) Hillary's email investigation (baselessly finding no fault) are now motivated (potentially politically) to do their jobs the way they should have been done in the earlier case.

I guess the principal of 'all are equal before the eyes of the law' is just too much to expect from the DOJ and FBI, especially when political affiliations simply have to be taken into account. Clearly the principal of 'all are equal before the eyes of the law' simply must be sacrificed on the alter of liberalism, just so that they can feel good about themselves.

All of this political posturing doesn't matter.

What matters is what's in those 1.2 million pages of evidence that the DOJ OIG is going to give Congress in January...and, of course, what Congress does with that evidence.

Actually that last line was a mistake. Sorry about that.

I have to say I am very surprised at how the Republicans have turned into such babies. Anyone with integrity would realize how hypocritical it is to have spent 16 years non stop investigating a political opponent and then turn around and cry like an infant at ONE investigation.

Everything Trump and they do screams "guilty".

If you think that the way Trump and his allies have treated the DOJ and the FBI doesn't matter, I'm afraid you don't have a proper understanding of how D.C. works. It matters, and their will be long lasting consequences, whether they are apparent to us little people or not.

So when did the FBI become so corrupt?

    And how do you know?

And why isn't the president launching an investigation into the corruption?

Sorry, but you arguments get weaker and weaker, you have NOT ONE shred of evidence just the usual bull****.

And what's the really ugly part, is that you and others in here were the first ones to demand investigation after investigation of the Clintons who seldom protested...but here a president not only appears to have broken the law but is acting guilty a hell and you whine and accuse good people of being corrupt.

If you have evidence present it.

But we know you'll just keep shoveling lies over the lies...

When did the Republicans pay for and use fake information to convince a FISA Court to authorize wiretapping a Presidential candidate? You know...illegal stuff.

Haha no problem. After the eight year onslaught of lies, personal and professional attacks, and obstructionist behavior Republicans perpetrated against the Obama administration you would think these kids wouldn't be so thin skinned. The only thing weaker than their spine is their character.
