Anti-government demonstrations that began in Iran on Thursday have now spread to several major cities.

Large numbers reportedly turned out in Rasht, in the north, and Kermanshah, in the west, with smaller protests in Isfahan, Hamadan and elsewhere.

The protests began against rising prices but have spiralled into a general outcry against clerical rule and government policies.

A small number of people have been arrested in Tehran, the capital.

They were among a group of 50 people who gathered in a city square, Tehran's deputy governor-general for security affairs told the Iranian Labour News Agency.

When you've outlawed birth control for 40 years, you'd better focus on your domestic economy and job-creation, because you're going to be up to your eyeballs in young people. You really don't want to have lots of young people who are jobless.

I don't know that I would put my finger on birth control as a main driver here, though demography does have an effect. In Iran, however, it is more down to the consequences of decades of autocratic and often deeply corrupt rule based on emnity of Western culture, Sunites, Israel and The Great Satan. The resulting sanctions and costs of projection of power have deprived the populatiin of otherwise available income. Without that mismanagement the country would be quite well off at its present population count I should suspect.

The kids can see right through the Clerics and their nonsense.

I love it. I just hope that they don't end up dead.

You cannot suppress a free people and not expect them to one day retaliate.

Iran was on track before the Revolution to becoming a modern nation where it's citizens, especially its women, could feel free to follow their dreams and goals.

This Before -- After photo shows the heavy-handed change.

The daughters (and sons), and grandchildren of the women of pre-Revolution Iran are just waiting. This might be the time they make their move, or it might not be. But, it's coming. People will not willing submit to chains for very long. Especially when they've had a taste of freedom.

Strange how CNN is giving zero coverage to the story of widespread anti-govt protests across Iran. If it was Antifa, or the Occupy movement, then CNN would be all over the story.

That’s because they would have video.

And the protests don’t sound too huge..yet.

But I do love your commitment to human rights...on that side of the gulf.

True, and CNN would salivate over wide-spread anti-US protests - in Iran or anywhere else.

You also might not want US destabilization efforts in your nation endlessly.

They cover what the Wall Street/donor/"job creator" class directs them to, what a half a dozen multinationals who bought up the media machine in search of endless war order them to. You will see no real debate on endless war or endless war spending

"You cannot suppress a free people and not expect them to one day retaliate."

The corporate state would do well to heed that advice.

The difference in the US is that no one is stopping anyone from protesting. In Iran, however, a religious extremist nations, it won't be long before the heads of protesters begin to roll.

Here?

Nah.

You mean like those Hillary Clinton gave undisclosed speeches to at Goldman Sachs - speeches which she still refuses to disclose?

Would anyone claim Al-Jazeera is a CIA mouthpiece?

Strange how some rightwing blogger dip**** on facebook told you CNN was hiding it and you believed them

These protests have been rocking Iran for the past few days, and yet CNN is only getting to them just now.

Fox News literally didn't post an article about it until Trump tweeted about it. Same day as CNN. (can't tell the hours as CNN just has the "updated" timestamp)

I wonder what role the CIA or Soros have in these protests. They must be busy.

Already happened, perhaps it's thus far been no one you cared about. Occupy, DAPL, Ferguson. This stuff is always ramped up/introduced upon more vulnerable populations of a society in order to acclimate the population at large. Once the masses are accustomed to the phenomenon as displayed by your denial here, the program can be ramped up to include more. For example, the police murdering unarmed black males (and females) has become common, and now unsubstantial people whites can be gone after as we saw with the murder of the unarmed, compliant white male who was gunned down in a hotel hallway.

Militarized police departments. Protests shut down via violence by the corporate state. Corporate for profit prisons with convict labor leasing returning america to profiteering from bondage where the corporate state can turn $40-50K per year per hominid; there’s our jobs program and it is a growth industry. THE most heavily surveilled and incarcerated population the planet has ever known, and still they/we sat on their/our fweedumb loving arses and allowed the guarantee of Habeas Corpus to be stripped from us.

The power structure knows full well they have lost all semblance of legitimacy and are quite prepared for when folks like you awaken to it all.

Yeah, that too, all of it. See how that works?

Nothing would make me happier than seeing this twisted Theocracy taken down via a revolution. The level of Iran’s sponsored terrorism is without comprehension and scale. If a true movement does arise, I hope the US funds and backs it with everything we can. I don’t say this lightly, I detest covert nation building but this situation calls for an all out effort.

There are so many mistakes in your post that it's hard to know where to start. Here -- none of the protests you mention above were shut down - riots and violence, however, were shut down. Hard to believe you mention DAPL, since the Standing Rock Sioux have been trying to get the "groupie" protesters to leave for months. Those protesters camped out and the damage they did included erosion of the land. It's the Sioux's ancestral land and they don't want them there.

Again -- you are mistaken. Recent studies have verified that black suspects are not shot by law enforcement than are white suspects. The rate is actually pretty low, all things considered.

Corporate for profit prisons with convict labor leasing returning america to profiteering from bondage where the corporate state can turn $40-50K per year per hominid; there’s our jobs program and it is a growth industry. Another funny word, "militarized," which, of course is used incorrectly. Local law enforcement might purchase old military equipment, but they are not "militarized," which has a very different meaning. If the look of the equipment scares you -- that's understandable -- but the process the police must follow hasn't changed. They do not follow military procedure. You're taking part in a bit of false fear-mongering.

The power structure knows full well they have lost all semblance of legitimacy and are quite prepared for when folks like you awaken to it all.

The "power structure?" Do you even hear yourself? That's almost as bad as "corporate state." Certainly no more truthful.
