Despite Trump hopes, US Russia relations get chilly - CNNPolitics

Washington (CNN)In the space of a week, the Trump administration has named Russia a "rival power," sanctioned a close Putin ally, and decided to give Ukraine anti-tank weapons to help in its fight against Moscow-backed militias.

It's a series of steps that has been paired with tougher rhetoric from the State Department about Moscow's destabilizing activities in eastern Ukraine, and serious charges from the Pentagon that Russia is intentionally violating de-confliction agreements in Syria.
The slew of actions highlights a decided turn away from the warmer, more cooperative relationship with Russia that President Donald Trump called for during his campaign and early in his presidency.

Surprise, surprise. I thought Trump & Putin were best buds. Selling arms to the Ukraine must be good for the arms business (read 'Trump donor class'). The European members of NATO were nervous enough before about Trump.

Well this is, uh, uncomfortable. I actually approve of something Trump has done.

Selling arms to a Russian neighbor country & former Soviet component is good?

BTW, I like that Mill quote.

Meanwhile, Trump's un-friends, NATO, is reporting concern regarding a marked increase in Russian submarine activity.

Russian undersea naval activity in the North Atlantic has reached new levels, and NATO is worried that the undersea cables connecting North America and Europe and the rest of the world are being targeted.

"We are now seeing Russian underwater activity in the vicinity of undersea cables that I don't believe we have ever seen," US Navy Rear Adm. Andrew Lennon, commander of NATO's submarine forces, told The Washington Post. "Russia is clearly taking an interest in NATO and NATO nations' undersea infrastructure."

They should be really chilly. Here is an example why: https://www.texastribune.org/2017/11/01/russian-facebook-page-organized-protest-texas-different-russian-page-l/

Last year, two Russian Facebook pages organized dueling rallies in front of the Islamic Da’wah Center of Houston, according to information released by U.S. Sen. Richard Burr, a North Carolina Republican.

Heart of Texas, a Russian-controlled Facebook group that promoted Texas secession, leaned into an image of the state as a land of guns and barbecue and amassed hundreds of thousands of followers. One of their ads on Facebook announced a noon rally on May 21, 2016 to “Stop Islamification of Texas.”

A separate Russian-sponsored group, United Muslims of America, advertised a “Save Islamic Knowledge” rally for the same place and time.

It's not as well known but we tapped Soviet undersea communications cables in the Pacific during the Cold War: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Operation_Ivy_Bells. I had lunch once with a guy who worked for Sanders Associates, what was then a major producer of electronic gear for the DOD. He told me he had seen the waterfront of Vladivostok through a periscope in a U.S. sub. We got that close to the USSR

Very good on the Trump Administration to challenge Russian influence in Eastern Europe.

Yeah. I mean, Putin denies any official Russian involvement, so why should it affect US-Russian relations?
I think Putin is going to try to build up that buffer area between him and Europe. The two most dangerous military leaders in recent history, Napoleon and Hitler, invaded Russia and were defeated by Russia retreating across that buffer zone. If Putin is appeased in the Ukraine, I would bet the Baltic states will be next.
Why should that matter to me? I don't know, except I don't believe that might should make right. People should be allowed to have their own country if they want.

like my siggy states, everyone get ready for WWIII ................... enjoy your X-mas, while U can ........... before April 30 next year **** will be blowing thru the fan ............. Drumpf will show US the way ..................

Well, your first mistake is thinking Trump and Putin "were best buds". I'm thinking you believe the Mainstream Media spin. Like them, you are wrong.

This Ukraine action is right in line with the Trump Doctrine and previous actions Trump has taken that affect Russia. Now...not all of that action is in the best interest of Russia, so it's not surprising that people might consider the US-Russia relations as being chilly.

I guess it's only surprising to those who don't actually know what's going on. But hey...it's only partially your own fault. After all, the Mainstream Media hasn't told you what's going on. But then, it's your decision to just listen to those guys.

A good portion of the 3 Baltic states are majority Russian-populated & the Russians were very upset when their former Soviet states joined NATO. It makes for an interesting mix.

Donald can't wait to nuke Pyongyang. Merry Xmas indeed. I recall that Tom Lehrer song 'We'll all go together when we go.'

An old friend of mine is a former Navy Sr. Chief who sorta, kinda, somewhat told me once about it. He was a nuke sailor or whatever you call people who are insane enough to live underwater for months and months. I'm glad that we had people who had the knowledge, skills and the balls to do that stuff. I'm also glad that I wasn't one of them. I'd never have made it. A minute in an elevator and I'm slobbering, making panic noises and looking for a way out.

Where do you get your information from? Who's telling you what's going on?

believe me; it's coming & Drumpf cannot ****ing wait ..................... enjoy the tiny bit of time we have .................. that's all we got .........

I get information from a variety of sources and come to my own conclusions about what's going on. Unlike useful idiots, I don't need someone else to tell me what to think.

One source I can recommend is the words of Trump's own Cabinet members. You know...Tillerson, Mattis, Mnuchin, Haley, etc. They tell you what they are doing.

It sounds like the liberals and MSM got it wrong. Never believe the confused ramblings any more than the jovial bonhomie of a professional negotiator. I’d say that’s sound advise. Don’t you think?
