AT&T is giving $1,000 bonuses to 200,000 employees after tax bill

Without workers we are also screwed. I'm tired of people forgetting about that. It is good that they shared some of their savings with some of their employees. I'm glad those employees can now afford to outright buy Christmas presents this year. I really mean that, but a PR stunt is a PR stunt. This tax bill is a huge windfall for these corporations, and if real wages don't reflect that in the coming years we will be in big trouble.

I don't think you know what the word windfall means.

Corporations are not going to be getting money they didn't have before. They will be keeping more of the money the created.

That is not a windfall.

Of course, but people didn't hear it like that.

Obama should never say anything like that when the town depends on the tourist dollar.

If somebody wants to spend their money that way, they should do it.

It was out of line for him to even bring it up.

If people didn't hear it like that, then that's on them. I was no fan of Obama's, but I'm also not stupid. I knew what he meant. Anyone who is responsible with their money knew what he meant.

Why was Obama not supposed to say that? Why is it out of line for him to comment about the spending habits of his constituents? That's a new rule I didn't know about.

AT&T has had a decades (many) long history of layoffs, buyouts, rejecting FTEs in favor of 1099 employees, etc. They are a good, rock solid old company, but there is no way they would do across the board wage raises, because they know they are highly unlikely to be sustainable.

Stephenson is a good CEO, and a lifelong Republican supporter and donor. He received $28 million in salary in 2016, which was up 13% from 2015. I wonder how many of his employees will see a 13% wage increase in 2018?

I'm not trying to demonize AT&T specifically. I'm trying to point out that this in no way indicates that they are serious about using their extra money to actually increase the quality of life for their workers beyond this one time bonus. This goes for every other large corporation that is in PR mode now that the tax bill went through. We shouldn't just trust corporations because we hate the government. We can't trust either. Let's hold off on all the praise until the PR window closes and see what they really do.

Definition of windfall

1 : something (such as a tree or fruit) blown down by the wind

2 : an unexpected, unearned, or sudden gain or advantage

That is distorting my post.

My post merely says, that only a leftist would think that the money a company legally earns and shares with it's employees, is some how money stolen from them.

If you want to talk about debt, where were you during the 8 years Obama doubled the national debt?
.

With the Republicans controlling all 3 houses, and the mantra for 8 years under Obama was the deficit, how can they justify this tax debacle? Only way after a disastrous year of failure was to come up with a disaster of a tax bill. And they call that successes, McConnell is ranting Trump had a triumphant year.

As Ryan has stated, next up for cuts, Medicaid & Social Security.

That's quite a coincidence. I'm getting 3K this year. My company announces bonuses on the 15th of Dec.

Every year...

Year end bonuses are nice to get. Kinda subsidizes xmas and other holiday expenses.

The Mexican government requires all companies to pay their employees money at the end of the year.

Companies have no choice.

I absolutely agree with you.

The $1000 bonus thing is nice, but in order for the workers to really feel a difference, they need to raise wages across the board (maybe 13% like Stephenson's was) and sustain the number of employees. If neither of those things happen, this is nothing but a good gesture PR stunt.

Because he singled out a certain place that depends on tourist dollars.

He could have said that generally but he targeted Las Vegas in particular.

What does this have to do with my original comment?

So he wasn't out of line for saying what he did. You're saying he shouldn't have said "Las Vegas". What should he have said? New Orleans? New York? Maui?

Las Vegas didn't suffer. It's as packed as it always was. Hell, it even has mass murderers show up.

You mean like the wlefare money paid to people who need it and you consider that "yours".

Another who thinks only one side is biased.

You mean, when he had a GOP Congress for six of those years? And, hey, what happened to GOP 'fiscal responsibility' when old Dubya added to the debt with his Wall Street welfare and wars?

MIA.

That is not a windfall.

They don't create money. They collect money. Legislation then dictates whether that money remains collected or gets spread around.

They aren't required to do anything.

I thought the purpose of the tax bill was that it would encourage businesses to raise wages and/or expand?

Many people in my family have worked and do work for ATT, and they are backed by the AFLCIO and receive generous raises every year.

.

Good for them. Do they mention anything about the number of layoffs every year?

Isn't that nice of them, sharing our wealth with their employees..
Whoa! How the **** do you have the RIDICULOUS notion that it is YOUR wealth?

I must have missed it. All I see are one time bonuses.

The bonuses are going to be taxed. If the Democrats were still running the show, they would be double taxed.

I thought the purpose of the tax bill was that it would encourage businesses to raise wages and/or expand?

The purpose of the tax bill was to leave more money in the private sector, for the benefit of the private sector.

I bet you won't hear any of those bonus recipients do all this whining.

Besides, that's taxable income. What are you crying about?

So politicians were lying about why they voted for it then?

Huh?

Calling anyone's legally earned money theirs, demonstrates a pretty screwed up belief system.
