Atlanta airport loses power, trapping travelers in planes and terminals

Tell me Hawkeye, what would you have done differently than what these professionals had done?

I know, he would have bitched and whined and tried to place blame on people that have different political beliefs than him!

Keep braying Hawkeye....that is all you ever do.

I dont need power expertise to tell the difference between power pros getting the job done and power pro's not getting the job done, I can tell by when the lights dont work and when the power system is on fire....you are barking up the wrong tree and whats more you should be smart enough to realize this.

I dont know what your problem is, that is to say why you are on this misson to jam me up because I am complaining that the work no longer gets done correctly in America, but I suggest that you get over it because as long as the work quality is poor I am going to be complaining.

I DESERVE BETTER

Not on a mission at all Hawkeye. And the only jam that I'm using for you is logic. You jumped headfirst hollering about something that you have no idea about what happened. Assuming. You should be smart enough to at least wait to get all the facts before jumping the gun like you did in the OP.

we use to be better! Horses and carriages did not have this problem!!!

Back in the old days, we would just put a penny in a burned out old fuse! And if the homeless got hungry, they would eat the soles of their shoes!

Open your mind man! This should not happen in America! Only in 3rd world airports! In America, fires cannot be responsible for shutting down airports! What about weather storms? How long until snow is stopping planes from flying!?! Trump foresaw this!

WE USE TO BE BETTER!

Tell you what. Why don't you fly down to Atlanta, get in touch with the electrical engineers, and tell them exactly what they should do to fix the problem. I am sure they would appreciate your expertise.

And I will bet that this person doesn't travel much, and probably doesn't even have a passport.

My power was out for 30 minutes earlier this year.....WE USE (sic) TO BE BETTER

Because fires never happened in the past.

I heard about this on the radio this afternoon. The commentator said the electrical system supplying Hartsfield has triple redundancy built in, but the fire somehow was able to knock out all of the redundant systems.

Reminded me if the DC-10 that crashed at Sioux City (I think it was) that lost its triple redundant hydraulic system when there was a catastrophic failure in the tail engine. Sometimes the thing you don't think can ever happen, happens.

A cool side story to this was Chick-fil-A opened on Sunday to feed the people stranded at the airport.

So this work is good enough for you then....

WOW

I live in a different world than you.

Obviously

A fire in the primary taking out the secondary is ALWAYS a design failure.

ARGUMENT REJECTED

I would never have run the main power lines and backup power lines through the same tunnel. (planning and design goof)

Redundancy goes right out the window.

Just saying.

That's nice.

At least some of the people stranded got to eat some tasty chicken sandwiches.

I agree. Could have been a cost or infrastructure constraint when it was built. It would be interesting to find out. I'm guessing the risk of a fire large enough to take out everything was considered to be a very low probability.

Not relevant to the discussion. People aren't saying "fire should never happen." People are saying "one fire shouldn't take out every power source simultaneously"

Its the busiest airport in the world. There should be two different power lines going to two different transformer stations powered by different power plants. And backup generators capable of maintaining airport operations.

Maybe I'm just mad because this made my week utter hell.

You didn't say what you would have done if you were in charge. That was the question. Why you are making a meal of this is a mystery.

I would love to be a fly on the wall if he did that.

I was at a friend's gig last week and the power in the hall was out for 20 mins. How can such a thing happen?

WE USED TO BE BETTER THAN THIS

I don't know anything about this, but I would assume sufficient redundancy might have prevented an outage.

That redundancy might be more expensive than it's worth, though.

It's because we have been under-funding or outright ignoring infrastructure for decades now.

Maintenance and replacement not done to save in the short term means more costs at once in the long term.
Sometimes in lives.

Edit: Personally, I think we're spending too much money on a military which is used to maintain our empire in all but name around the world.
But that isn't by any means the whole of the problem.
