Minnesota Lt. Gov. Tina Smith

Gov. Mark Dayton will appoint Lt. Gov. Tina Smith to replace Sen. Al Franken as Minnesota’s next U.S. senator, according to two high-level Democratic sources with knowledge of the decision. Dayton will name Smith as his choice at a Wednesday morning news conference, and she plans to run for the seat in a 2018 special election, the sources said. Franken announced last week his intention to resign after he was accused of improper conduct toward more than half a dozen women. “She’s a person of intelligence and competence, and from what I’ve seen, she’d be a good campaigner and a good candidate,” said state Sen. Richard Cohen, DFL-St. Paul. The selection also means Minnesota will have two female U.S. senators for the first time in history. Tina Smith will join Amy Klobuchar as the US Senators from Minnesota.

Franken is so pissed. His door back in just got slammed shut.

Back to SNL I guess.

And we are all sure you talked to Al Franken to find out how he felt about this.

Welp... got some reading to do to see who she is and what she's about.

She seems to be experienced in politics at least.

Actually he likes Tina Smith and thinks she'll do a great job.

And she will.

Yeah, that's what he's thinking for sure, Polly Anna.

He said as much.

Al Franken isn't coming back to elected office.

What fresh babble is this?

He's promised to resign. What "door back in"?

He was, and now he isn't. Then that senate seat goes back to the GOP next time around.

Win-win.

He wasn't and it doesn't. Only conspiracy theorists thought Franken was somehow coming back to office.

Minnesota is not electing a Republican to the Senate in 2020. We're a pretty liberal state, and if Trump is in office the GOP will have the least popular president in US history dragging them down and driving Democrats out to vote. Or, we'll have a President Pence or even President Ryan serving the tail end of a failed, ejected president's term. 2020 is not going to be a strong year for the GOP and they're definitely not flipping Minnesota that year.

We're taking back the Senate in 2020, and honestly have a decent shot at doing it in 2018 now. Particularly if the FBI decides to pull another election-week reveal like they did with Hillary Clinton.
