Live Alabama Election Results: Roy Moore and Doug Jones Compete for Senate Seat

..fist fest? Obamacare stands, no action on immigration, no entitlement reform, m-a-y-b-e a half-hearted tax reform, and they haven't even defunded Planned Parenthood. McConnell has gotten some judged through (thanks, Harry Reid!), but, as fist-fest? Nah.

Jones will be a law-and-order Democrat, but he'd have to noticeably and seriously come right on social issues, I think, to not be in rough spot come reelection.

Yes, fist-fest. In terms of tripping over their own dicks, spewing hypocritical and hyper-partisan bull**** 24/7 and turning a blind eye to the manifold conflicts of interest (among other things) of this administration.

The scales are beginning to shift, methinks, given the constant embarrassment that the republicans are suffering due to their own actions.

Not a big fan of Drudge, but he made a pretty accurate comment: "Strange would have won".

Yeah, that is the warning for Democrats going in to 2018. Don't expect all opponents to be Roy Moore.

I lost a bet with my husband tonight; I said that Moore would win no matter what the polls said, because I figured folks in Alabama would lie in the exit polls when they voted for Moore anyway. I am stunned that Jones actually won. I'm guessing Roy is stunned to. I am so thankful that this horrible, horrible man will not be in the Senate next month.

My next prediction (also incorrect, I hope)... the first headline we'll see tomorrow is Moore Campaign Demands Recount, Accuses Jones Campaign of Ballot Tampering.

Stay tuned!

I was surprised myself when I caught the news on CBC radio.

I too was looking at it like it was a scene from "Deliverance" and we were about to hear "dueling banjos".

Even the fact it was close is a black eye for Trump

Moore was a piss poor candidate with baggage they shouldn't have let him come in with. The GOP should have demanded he step down. Instead Idiot in chief endorsed him and hoped his presence could sway an election. It did not. So much was wrong with the Alabama special election and I can't fault the people when your choice are a Democrat or an alleged child sex predator backed by the blusterous orange. However, done properly, the DNC would not have gained a seat in red Alabama.

Right - easy call. Vote for the Democrat!

And the bottom line is the Republican voters in Alabama voted for Moore. Don't see any reason to blame anyone but them. The IMO important "baggage" was well known before he ran in the primary - hell, who this guy was (a wingnut) was known before he ran and won his last seat as Chief Justice of the AL Supreme Court. The voters like this guy, homophobe, contemptuous of the constitution, theocrat nutjob.

So, Roy says the military votes are not counted, and he is heading over to the Secy state office.

Secretary of State himself is now on CNN, saying he is uncomfortable meeting with Roy or any candidate and will not

This guy Moore's like Trump, I swear.

The Alabama Secretary of State says it would be "highly unlikely" that going through write-ins/outstanding ballots would change outcome of Jones victory.

For live election results. Polls close at 8:00pm EST which is just over 30 minutes from the posting of this OP.

Live Alabama Election Results: Roy Moore and Doug Jones Compete for Senate Seat

Alabama votes on Tuesday in a special election to fill the Senate seat vacated by Jeff Sessions, now the attorney general. The last polls close at 8 p.m. Eastern. Strong support for Roy S. Moore, the Republican, is expected in rural, mostly white parts of the state and in its northern half. The Democrat, Doug Jones, aims to create a lead in the urban counties that include Birmingham and Montgomery, and across a band of largely black counties.

One critical battleground is a trio of smaller, whiter cities: Mobile, Tuscaloosa and Huntsville. Mr. Moore won a hard race in 2012 by keeping things close there. Mr. Jones hopes to win the cities by a convincing margin.

I guess I'll have to stop with the Alabama jokes now-- Doug Jones didn't have a snowballs chance in this state. This state is overwhelming Republican. HE WINS by around up to 21K votes now.

Moderate Republicans by the thousands had to be crossing party lines to cast a vote for Jones--and that's the historic part of this election.

This is definitely the shot across the bow of the Republican party going into the midterm election cycle.

As Republican Jeff Flake stated: Decency won tonight, and it's high dam time it did.

Oh Santorum just called Moore a terrible candidate.

But........he supported him and thought he was great.

Go home Rick...

I have to admit, Trump's tweet tonight was uncharacteristically classy. I hope he's ok!

Indeed! Indeed! We can expect a lot more of this in 2018. The Republican Party has proven to be totally disfunctional in 2017.

Meh, he was "classy" on the night he won the presidency, only to then revert back to his same antics.

Either tomorrow or in the next few days, he will be back to the same ole Trump.

Don't forget, this is self-inflicted. Sessions would have safely kept this seat if republicans hubris didn't gravitate him toward the presidential administration.

This breathes life into a democratic takeover of the senate. Many are suggesting that 2018 will be the year of justice. Vigilance will favor the noble, over time.

The tides are changing......keep ignoring it, it is comedy gold.

Sure sure. Democrats got nothing but Roy Moores in their future.

Wonder if Moore will blame this loss on the gays too.

Moore's not conceding. Alabama will drag it's feet certifying the election so that the Senate can use Strange's vote for the draconian tax bill.

It's not surprising the GOP finds new ways to show they're morally bankrupt.

Great!!!!!!!

Because the Republicans will have nothing but lost races in their future!

Besides your usual excellent commentry, I thought we should consider another Canuck's insight into Alabama. Perhaps it's still timely.

Alabama, you got
the weight on your shoulders
That's breaking your back.

Your Cadillac
has got a wheel in the ditch
And a wheel on the track

Not a big fan of Drudge, but he made a pretty accurate comment: "Strange would have won".

Perhaps, but that would have been another travesty. He's sitting AG, the scandal plagued Gov. appoints him to the open seat, and "poof" goes the investigation into the corrupt POS Governor!

That was the real dilemma for GOP voters in AL - a corrupt guy appointed by a corrupt Gov. or Roy Moore! They chose the wingnut theocrat who happened to like young girls... Oh well.

Well, he has 3 years. He is up in 2020. The state of American politics in 2020 is anyone's guess.

Hey, you're not alone. I was sure Moore would win.

As did I. i underestimated the black vote, as well as Moderates coming out for Jones.

Yes, Virginia is Purple. But Alabama is the deepest Red. Both are big wins, but this may be even bigger.

We need to take our hats off to those principled conservatives and Republican that crossed the line to vote for Moore.

And let's not forget the men & women of colour who mobilized and worked hard, and now saw the system work for them. They, and the country, have renewed hope.

I didnt follow your conversation but as a standalone, your response is a compliment to the people of Alabama.

I confess to being surprised, I didnt give them enough credit.

Don't feel bad. I'm in the same boat. I don't think Alabamians are stupid. I just thought their hatred of Democrats would tip the vote to Moore.

There is an upside for the Republicans here. This story, all the smears, the accusations, the media coverage, etc... That's all out of the news now. I guess that's why they put the Gillibrand plan in motion, as this one will no longer be in the news.

Excuse me who, put the "Gillibrand plan" in motion?
