Clarence Thomas's wife presents award to James O'Keefe at Trump hotel | TheHill

I actually think the headline is sort of a perfect snapshot of the state of the conservative movement in 2017. But here's more:

James O'Keefe, the conservative activist who attempted to plant a false story in The Washington Post this month about GOP Senate candidate Roy Moore, was presented Wednesday with an Impact Award, handed to him by Ginni Thomas, wife of Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas.

O'Keefe accepted the award on behalf of his organization, Project Veritas, at an event hosted by the conservative group United for Purpose at the Trump International Hotel in Washington, D.C..

What better place than Trump's hotel for a wife of a sitting SC Justice to honor a guy whose organization just tried to plant a false story in WaPo to assist a credibly accused sexual predator in getting elected as a GOP Senator in Alabama. The stars have aligned perfectly here. This is your modern conservative movement!

The headline made me laugh. Or cringe. Or scream or something.

Wait - the same James O'Keefe and Project Veritas that was just busted trying to set the Wapo up with a fake story about Roy Moore? The "Impact" Award? Like what, the biggest impact on the most gullible suckers?

Thank you for reporting this. I agree that this perfectly wraps up in a nice neat package much of what is wrong with the right wing today.

William F. Buckley would be ashamed of what has happened in the perversion of what he knew as the conservative movement had he live long enough to witness its rape and violation.

Good deal.

At a time when the conservative movement needs William F. Buckley jr. it's got Rush Limbaugh.

Which is like a surgeon implanting you more hemorrhoids instead of the liver you really need.

Buckley was much too much the elitist for the current conservative movement. You actually had to listen and think along with the man.

Limbaugh is a loud gasbag, filling the air with the obscenity of himself.

Interestingly, Buckley appeared to have predicted President Trump.

Look for the narcissist. The most obvious target in today’s lineup is, of course, Donald Trump. When he looks at a glass, he is mesmerized by its reflection. If Donald Trump were shaped a little differently, he would compete for Miss America. But whatever the depths of self-enchantment, the demagogue has to say something [to voters]. So what does Trump say? That he is a successful businessman and that that is what America needs in the Oval Office. There is some plausibility in this, though not much. The greatest deeds of American Presidents — midwifing the new republic; freeing the slaves; harnessing the energies and vision needed to win the Cold War — had little to do with a bottom line.Look for the narcissist. Why do folks who would rather there not even be a right wing always like to tell us what it is we need?

I used to be a part of the right wing (my family consists of about 90% conservatives). I admired conservative thinkers like William F Buckley and Milton Friedman. To some extent, I still do, even if I don't agree with their politics. There is nothing redeeming about 98% of the conservative 'leaders' today. There are a few who did not sell out to the Trump demagoguery, like Charlie Sykes and George Will, but the morally upstanding and non-hypocritical conservative is all but extinct.

Thank you for presenting that information. Everybody needs to read the very insightful observation Buckley made about Trump.

It's always better to spin a story against conservatives than to pay attention to left-leaning media and their vendetta against Trump.

I would add the name of John Leo to that list. I always enjoyed his work for US NEWS even if he took the opposite position.

I don't know. Ask one sometime.
Before you go, tell me what you think the conservative movement needs.

Yes, it's very, very sad.

Just FWIW, overall I believe having principled opposition is a great and necessary thing for effective government. Doesn't matter who is in power, it's far better for that party/ideology to be opposed at every turn by those with different viewpoints. It keeps the party in power as honest as possible, and forces them to make the case to the public over sometimes bitter opposition. That's a great thing.

I just don't see a whole lot to respect about the current 'conservative' movement, at least at the national level in the Trump era. Honoring a deeply dishonest hack like James O'Keefe is just one symptom of the current rot at the movement's core, IMO.

When have you ever expressed "respect" for anything you didn't agree with? What benefit does anyone get from your "respect" any way?

You just quoted me respecting opposition that I don't agree with. See ^^^^^

What benefit does anyone get from your "respect" any way?

Dunno, but I didn't claim anyone did get any benefit from MY respect so I'm not sure where that question came from. I was talking in broader terms, and IMO, the Democrats and the country benefit from having principled opposition. If you don't agree, fine.

You were just speaking in generalities. Oh I respect "principled opposition". Whatevs. Respect would come across in the way you argue if you mean what you say.
