It depends upon what was discussed. As long as he did not undermine US policy (and had the courtesy to let the resident administration know about the meeting) it would not be illegal.

The right only likes the military when it's an excuse for why we can't afford healthcare or a way to illegally remove freedoms from foreign citizens while trying to pretend there's a "coup" going on in america.

The irony is palpable. Military zealots who have approved dozens of real life coups trying to compare a federal investigation to one.

What "freedoms" did people have in Iraq or Afghanistan under Saddam and the Taliban that they don't have under the new leadership?

The key here is not the organization that set it up. The key is that it was set up while Trump was still a candidate, and not the president.

Depends. If Trump met with Putin, and it was on a social basis, no foul. However, there would be trouble if the meeting was an attempt to undercut US foreign policy that was in place at that time.

The OP linked article used the word "tried" quite a bit. If the meeting(s?) with Trump actually happened then maybe the article would have used another word.

"tried" says everything we need to know about intent. If someone tries to rob a bank and fails, he's still guilty of trying.

Not so fast there. The fact that someone tried to get Trump into the bank shows no intent on Trump's part to enter the bank much less to rob it.

There are plenty of people in the gov working to undermine the President. The right doesn’t do that. We are overt. We speak out publicly and attack the ideas. The left works behind the scenes, hides their agenda and attacks the individuals.
