Republican Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell steps back Roy Moore criticism

It highlights the naiveté at best or the disingenuousness at worst of Republicans who claimed a moral high ground because Republican congressional leaders condemned Moore and claimed they might unseat him should he win the election.

It was obvious to anybody who paid attention to events within the last year that such a prediction was laughably false.

And so what if "got their moral points" if they no longer claim to believe the women who accused Moore? If they shrug aside child molestation, then there's no moral points to get.

True but they are racking up points on immorality and condoning it to win an election.

Exactly.

McConnel has little choice but to accept the will of the voters, as it should be.

He does have choice however, from the point of the election onward, if Moore were to do some additional abhorrent activity.

Gander a wild guess, but in so called States not deep Red/or Blue, the women vote for Dems will go up 5- 10 points of more.
In Blues States where R's have House seats, between this and the Tax bill, many should get their resumes updated.

I would never do that.

But McConnel is constrained by constitutional behaviour, and that's what will be the determinate here. Irrespective of the moral arguments.
Has he changed his mind? Yes, why?

McConnell: Roy Moore ethics probe 'almost certain' if he's elected | Fox News
[Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., told Fox News Wednesday that an ethics investigation of Roy Moore is "almost certain" if the Republican is elected in next month's Alabama runoff vote.

McConnell, who backed incumbent Sen. Luther Strange against Moore in September's Republican primary runoff, told "The Ingraham Angle" that the Senate would "deal with the aftermath of the decision the people of Alabama make on Dec. 12." He declined to indicate whether the Senate would vote to expel Moore, saying only "it'll be up to the [Senate Ethics] committee."/QUOTE]

I was certain when the story of Roy Moore and child molestation first broke that not only was it not strategically timed to help Jones in any way, but that Republicans would in time come around to support Moore just as they came around to support trump. After the Access Hollywood tape in which trump bragged about committing sexual assault was made public, Republicans condemned and abandoned trump en masse, only to rally behind him as the election neared, and to bury the story of the tape as well as the thirteen women who accused him of sexual assault altogether.

After the election, the excuse for the tape and allegations of sexual assault was often, "People knew who he was when they voted for him. He won," as though an electoral victory constituted a legal and moral exoneration for all past turpitudes. This was also mirrored in the Gianforte incident, in which a House candidate beat up a reporter and likewise experienced complete exoneration through electoral victory in the following days, suffering no censure and certainly not removal by Congress.

As condemnation of Moore by the GOP continues to recede, it's clear that Moore is following the post-Access Hollywood tape trajectory with almost perfect precision.

Republican Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell steps back Roy Moore criticism - ABC News

Is there no sense of decency anymore?

Correction: "the story of Roy Moore and (ALLEGED) child molestation first broke." Always best to be accurate.

That's exactly the point. Despite such stories, and every effort to use them to defeat Senator Moore, the Alabama electorate still chose him.

Of course the Republicans in Congress will now dial back the rhetoric, since Moore is duly elected and they have to work with him if they want his vote. They already got their moral points by showing they opposed him before the vote, now they have to deal with reality and show they accept the "people's choice."

Innocent until proven guilty has been my argument all along in every instance either side tries to smear someone they oppose.

If I were an elected representative, I would strive to work with him unless and until any allegations are proven and thus provide grounds for action.

The election hasn't even happened yet.

The election hasn't even happened yet.

My bad. I misread the "election" article. I thought it had already happened. :3oops:

So, edit my original response to change "elected" to "if he is elected," and my response remains the same.

Thanks for pointing this out.

No surprise, McConnell is a worthless partisan hack.

Agreed!

And it's Congress all together, in this. The whole damn swamp. Even though I hate using that Trumpism.

The thing about the swamp is, it includes Donald Trump. In fact, Trump is the leader of the swamp.

In order for the swamp to be drained, Trump has to be the first one to go.

My feelings are a bit harsher:

Trump's turning the swamp into a cesspool ...

Christonacracker. "Deal with the aftermath"? Sounds like he's just given up hope that the Alabamans aren't stupid enough to elect a pervert who cops feels on teenage girls to the Senate.

Polls show that Moore has regained lost ground and leads from what I have seen i the past few days 50-47 or so, margin of error 3 %.
35 % of AL are Evangelicals who are strongly opposed to abortion.

Moore will win, I'm afraid. Disgusting.

Conyers will be forced out (as he should be). Franken will be forced to resign (as he should be). And the alt-right will send a pervert to the Senate to fill their gaps and then some.

In a CBS poll out this weekend finds 71 percent of Alabama Republicans say the allegations against Roy Moore are false, and those who believe this also overwhelmingly believe Democrats and the media are behind those allegations by 97%.

https://www.cbsnews.com/news/alabama-republicans-allegations-against-moore-false-cbs-news-poll/

I believe why so many do not believe the allegations is because there has been an out pour of people locally who have come out and debunked many of the allegations that were published in the WaPo. These people get local coverage but have been shut out in national coverage.

Leigh Corfman's story of Moore molesting her at 14 were totally shot down with court records. She claimed she gave her home phone number to Moore in early 1979 when her mother was at the courthouse for a custody hearing and he later called her at her mother's home in Gadsden to arrange for a meeting. She said he picked her up around the corner of her mother's home and went with him to his house 30 minutes away. She claimed this happened more than once and after Moore sexually assaulted her is when her life spiraled out of control.

Well the court records tell something different. In Feb. 22, 1979 both Leigh's parents were at the courthouse. There is a written request to have custody changed from the mother to the father because Leigh had become a disciplinary problem and the mother could no longer handle her. It was dated Feb. 22, 1979. It stated both parents agreed it would be best interest of their daughter for the father to take custody of their daughter. On Feb. 22, 1979 the judge signed an order that gave custody to the father. The father did not live in Gadsden. On that day Leigh's father took physical custody of his daughter. He lived in O'Hatchee which is 20 some miles away. From the court documents Leigh's life had already spiraled out of control long before her "alleged" encounters with Moore. In fact being in physical custody of her father over 20 some miles from her mother's home make it pretty impossible for Leigh to receive phone calls from Moore at her mother's home and meet him around the corner of her mother's home.

The story that WaPo ran claiming Moore was banned from the Gadsden Mall was also debunked. Those on Moore's team investigating the claims found the man who was in charge of mall security who had happen to work for the Mall for over 20 years said the accusations were false. That all his time employed by the mall there was no such ban on Roy Moore and he would know if such a thing had occurred. The owners of the mall at that time also gave a statement that there was no such ban ever put on Roy Moore.

Then you have Ms. Nelson who claims that Roy Moore tried to sexually assault her behind the Ole Hickory restaurant. Multiple waitresses that worked there in the said time period have come out and 1. don't remember her ever working there. 2. never remembered seeing Moore in the restaurant as Ms. Nelson claimed he was a regular that sat at the counter. 3. Waitresses did not work the counter as Nelson described, the bartender did and food was served by the short order cook. 4. Nelson claimed she was 15. The waitresses claimed you had to be at least 16 to work there. 5. Nelson said that Moore offered her a ride home and went behind the restaurant next to the dumpsters and tried to sexually assault her. The waitresses said there was no room behind the restaurant for dumpsters because the restaurant backed up to residential property. There were no doors to the back of the restaurant. They stated the dumpsters were on the side of the building visable to the main highway that ran in front. That the kitchen crew took the trash out a side door. 6. Nelson claimed the restaurant closed at 10:00. The waitresses said they stayed open till after 11:00 because the Goodyear plant was right next door and second shift ended at 10:00 and many would come over to get something to eat. 7. Nelson claimed the parking lot was dark. The waitresses claim it was well lit as it had a wrap around porch that was full of lighting. 8. Every day the Moore campaign since has requested Nelson's year book be inspected by a third party and to date Gloria Allred has refused. 8. The stepson of Nelson has come out publicly and claimed his stepmother is lying.

Now these are some of the things that are getting covered locally and not nationally and explains why so many Republican Alabamians don't believe the allegations.

You have sources for this information?

There are a number of interviews that were done by local news on YouTube of the waitresses. There is a presser given by Moore's atty's addressing the court records on YouTube. There are written statements from local news papers of the statement released by the former head of Gadsden Mall security reported. You should have no trouble doing a search and finding these things.

Literally the only source you felt confident enough about sharing was the poll. Apparently the poll was something we couldn't take you at your word for, but we're supposed to take you at your word about everything else discrediting Corfman.

Suit yourself. But if you really wanted to seek the truth you might want to start with the local stations in Alabama and do a search in their recent archives on the stories. Same with the local papers. If you really wanted to seek the truth you would look for the presser given by Moore's attys on the court documents that have not been disputed. If you really wanted to seek the truth you would search for the interviews of the waitresses on youtube. If you really wanted to seek the truth you would do a search on the video of Nelson's stepson calling his stepmom an liar. I've seen them and I have posted some of them on different threads and I am not about to go in search for all of them again just to suit you.

I gave you a sound reason why Republican Alabamians don't believe the allegations of Moore as the poll revealed. All politics are local and the folks in Alabama are hearing and reading stuff that isn't being reported nationally.

If i really wanted to "seek truth" i wouldn't take things at face value by an anonymous person on the internet.
The quick search i did let me conspiracy videos and unsourced blog articles and conservative websites...

I don't think your pedalling truth but trying to sow doubt to support your politics and feelings for this wanting the stories to be all made up
