Former Bosnian Serb army commander known as the ‘butcher of Bosnia’ sentenced to life imprisonment more than 20 years after Srebrenica massacre

Ratko Mladić, the former commander of the Bosnian Serb army and one-time fugitive from international justice, has been sentenced to life imprisonment after being convicted of genocide, war crimes and crimes against humanity by a UN tribunal at The Hague.

More than 20 years after the Srebrenica massacre and his first indictment by the international criminal tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY), the soldier nicknamed the “butcher of Bosnia” has been found guilty of of multiple offences.

Finally! Justice!

Hmmm...having met and befriended people from both sides while living in Prague, I can say this.
That war made little to no sense to the people of the region. But one thing's for certain...even Russians think twice about frigging with the Serbs.
War is war. Anyone who thinks Queensbury Rules should apply to it, needs their head examined.

War is war yes...But trying to ethnic cleansing your neighbours and ending up with the genocide in the middle of Europe is something else.

Genocide? I believe there are still lots of Yugo Muslims left...

What kind of argument is this? There are Jewish people still living in Poland too. Doesn't change anything.

OMG...:doh
The war was a war to maintain Yugoslavia as a whole, with Serb dominance...not some Serbian campaign to wipe out all Muslims.

Does this mean that GWBush should be tried for the 100,000 to 1,000,000 dead Iraqis due to his false claims/lies regarding Iraq and WMD? Or does it mean justice is only for those outside the West? Is GWB the "Butcher of Iraq?"

My thoughts exactly. 3rd world scumbags may be brought to justice, but what about 1st world scumbags like Kissinger and others?

I remember when those Serbian thugs got their asses bombed.....Then they surrendered...It was great

Except this wasn't war. This was mass murder of unarmed noncombatants. What the **** is wrong with you?

I guess you think millions upon millions of military personnel around the world over the past decades need their "head examined" for abiding by the laws of war?

I hate to burst your bubble Dave, but chemical weapons are "WMDs" and there is a boatload of evidence--- and dead Kurds--- to show it.

As usual, you don't even have a nodding relation with reality.

Ever heard of Dresden?

Ever heard of Dresden?

Ah, the "what about Dresden" wail. Sorry bud; A) ever hear of the Blitz? And B) that does not justify the mass murder of non combatants by Serbian thugs.

I'm not trying to "justify" jack ****...and how many times do I have to tell you?
I am not your "bud".
I'm pointing out that war is war. That "innocents" die in a war, and that if you expect there to be rules to killing in a war, then you truly do live in an alternate reality.
The idea of a war, is to LIVE. And to do that in a war, you must either hide your ass real good, or kill the enemy. In "wholesale" fashion if at all possible.

You do realize that the claim was that Iraq had an active chemical weapon program. Yes, Iraq had a chemical weapon program, but the sanctions and the inspections insured they did not. Chemical weapons deteriorate over time, and at the time of the Iraqi war, all the chemical weapons were either dismantled or deteriorated enough not to be able to be used. The sanctions put into place had worked.

The sanctions and inspections were supposed to ensure that they did not start gassing their own people again, but in case you've forgotten, sanctions can be gotten around(and Dave doesn't think there should have been sanctions at all to begin with) and Iraq did not cooperate with the inspections in anything more than a grudging way.

Saddam managed to move his stockpile into Syria in the run up to Iraqi Freedom.

Except you absolutely are, and it's blindingly obvious to everyone buddy. You making excuses for Serbian war crimes is despicable.

There's a big difference between dying in a bombing of military targets in a city and having your family rounded up and shot for the crime of not being the right ethnicity.

The air quotes are amusing though. Do you actually believe that the people Mladic and his cronies murdered weren't innocent?

Except there are rules to warfare. Lots of them. Very important ones, in fact. But it's not surprising you think decades of military personnel have been "living in an alternate reality" as they abide by the laws of war.

And no, the goal in war is not to exterminate innocent people. Did you see the US killing every Iraqi or Afghan civilian we coul catch?

Ah yes. One boatload of dead Iraqi Kurds via Saddam and precursors sold to him by the USA. 50 boatoads of dead Iraqis of all ethnicities by GWBush. So you must see exactly what I am talking about but deny it.

Ah yes, the CTer's paradox. How could Saddam not have WMDs, as you claim, if he was sold said WMDs by the US? Either he didn't have WMDs or he did. You can't have it both ways.

And no, there is no comparison between the two situations.

I saw what happened quite clearly. I saw Baghdad in flames. Ya...I think allot of innocent people were killed.
We also know about Hiroshima and Nagasaki. And lets not forget the crap the USA supported, financed and aided in while purchasing South America. The African governments being supported today by the USA and most of NATO, who butcher people and engage in real live slavery. And then there's the ****ing Saudis.
Don't wave the Stars and Stripes while lecturing anybody about these "rules of war" you think anybody pays attention to.

You have no idea what the people who Mladic had killed were up to.

Check the dates when Kurds were killed, and then check the dates when Saddam declared he had got rid of all WMDs and unfettered inspections by UN representatives verified that fact. Wake up!
