Democrats appear to appreciate the need to set a precedent for how to respond to ongoing allegations of sexual harassment and assault. With any luck this will be consistent and not merely symbolic.

WASHINGTON — Representative Nancy Pelosi, the Democratic leader, moved swiftly on Tuesday against the House’s longest serving lawmaker, calling for the House Ethics Committee to investigate sexual harassment charges against Representative John Conyers Jr., the top Democrat on the House Judiciary Committee.

Mr. Conyers, 88, confirmed a settlement of a wrongful termination complaint in 2015 from a staff member who had accused him of sexual harassment, although he denied that the staff member was fired for refusing to have sex with him. The settlement was first reported by Buzzfeed News on Monday.

Ms. Pelosi and senior Democrats on the Judiciary Committee offered little support.

“Any credible allegation of sexual harassment must be investigated by the Ethics Committee,” Ms. Pelosi said, adding that there should be “zero tolerance for harassment, discrimination, bullying or abuse in the House.”

Meanwhile, a child molester is receiving the de facto support of the President and Alabama's governor. Trump himself has been accused by fifteen women of sexual assault and harassment, and boasted in a tape to grabbing women's genitalia and kissing them without their permission, all of which mirrored the women's specific accusations. It is unlikely should Moore be elected that he will face censure or removal once in the Senate.

President Trump has now echoed Conway's comments, telling reporters before heading to Florida on Tuesday that “we don’t need a liberal person in there -- a Democrat.” Trump also added multiple times that Moore "denies" or "totally denies" the accusations against him and that “40 years is a long time.” Trump also declined to rule out campaigning for Moore. "I'll be letting you know next week," Trump said.

They are not moving to swiftly. This happened before 2015 and now that it is made public they want the to House Ethics Committee to investigate sexual harassment charges. Code word nothing will happen. Right?

Anyway Congressman Conyers said nothing happened.

“It is important to recognize that the mere making of an allegation does not mean it is true,” Mr. Conyers said. “In this case, I expressly and vehemently denied the allegations made against me, and continue to do so.

The call for an ethics investigations was made by Pelosi one day after the sexual harassment was made public. Al Franken has already submitted himself before an ethics investigation. It's been over a year and not one Republican has called for an ethics investigation into Trump, and it's unlikely one will be carried out for Moore, let alone any action that results in his removal.

My apologies- Missed your thread and posted one.
The hearing should be public, televised, staffers and others to testify, make the settlement agreement public. Public monies were used to pay her off.

People need to be held accountable. Hopefully Democrats can be consistent when it comes to these issues. I'm glad that their first instinct hasn't been to automatically protect the accused or deny the possibility of any of this occurring. It's a big step up in politics.

Apology accepted, Captain Needa.

Agreed.

I don’t think there will be a public hearing on this because Conyers is probably not the only member of congress affected by this scandal. A public hearing would implicate dozens of elected officials in and out of office, and a scandal of this magnitude is something that would damage the institutional integrity of congress.

I may be a cynic, but speaker Paul Ryan probably wants this scandal to go away.

So what she called for a phony investigation right? What did Conyers said about this: Congressman Conyers said nothing happened.

The stupid dream that President Trump is going to be impeached is ridiculous. never going to happen. Next.....

"Moving Swiftly" is calling on an ethics investigation from a committee that doesn't actually do anything. They have secret deliberations, and then about 2% of the time they send a strongly worded letter.

If that is the "swift response" you are looking for then consider Roy Moore sufficiently admonished and move on.

Plus given how massively corrupt Congress is the idea that they care about ethics can only be sold to the very dim.

Yeah, it's like assigning the Enron VPs to root out Enron investment fraud.

The OP sure took a dark turn. Amazing how within a short year we've become accustomed to the most heinous behavior imaginable as simply being another yawn.

That's a typically Russian troll comment, encourging distrust in the established order, while declaring the entire congess is corrupt.

Did I say anything about impeachments? I said ethics investigation, that thing no Republican is calling for, in spite of fifteen accusations against Trump and his tape personally boasting about committing sexual assault.

And if Conyers committed sexual harassment, then it's likely that his personal word is not worth very much. That's why it was important for senior Democrats to demand an investigation into him.

If an ethics investigation results in a condemnation of the Senator, that would be a step towards censure, possibly removal, and almost certainly the end of Conyer's political career.

Besides, if an ethics investigation is so toothless, why are Republicans so squeamish about demanding one for Trump?

But Conyers is not the only elected representative who may be implicated in a open investigation. There could be dozens of elected officials who could be implicated.

If the Democrats were smart, they'd move quickly to cleanse themselves, once again showing America and the world the right way to make America great again.

It seems clear to me the parties cannot slip much lower in citizen dislike. I think now might be a ripe time to succeed by really taking the ethically higher road, along with true middle-class economic populism rather than the current Trump charade.

The Dems need to show by doing. By using action! Actions speak louder than words, as we can see with the current administration. They can face the upcoming elections by contrasting their quick & successful actions, against the GOP loud & boisterous hyperbole that never accomplishes much.

Oh, and that "cleansing" above also means jettisoning the Clinton's. Clean house thoroughly, and present the contrast to the voters. I think many will buy, particularly the moderates & independents, and that's how you win elections!

Indeed there could be.

The clintons are completely out of political office.

Unfortunately your OP hasn't left you the wiggle room for that argument since you already argued in the same post that Roy Moore wouldn't likely be censured or face removal from the Senate. A toothless committee is a toothless committee.

Yeah, it's like assigning the Enron VPs to root out Enron investment fraud.

Now if you want to be really depressed go take a count of the people who obviously dont understand that much.

Which is why I am thinking that Paul Ryan may not agree with a public investigation into Conyers’s scandal.

He does not have the power to stand in front of this Purity Panic without getting run over, and while he seems to be none too bright he understands at least this much.

You misread my post in two ways. 1)I said he wouldn't face removal (or censure), regardless of whether or not he's investigated, and 2) I strongly implied he wouldn't be investigated anyway, because the move has been to throw their support behind Moore as the President and the Alabama governor have clearly done.

And again, if an ethics investigation is so toothless, why are Republicans so squeamish about investigating Trump?

Speaking for myself, I think the opportunity to investigate a Democrat may be too much to resist. I certainly don't see him having any compulsion to urge an investigation into fellow Republicans.
