Democrats Move Swiftly Against Conyers Amid Latest Harassment Charges

You misread my post in two ways. 1)I said he wouldn't face removal (or censure), regardless of whether or not he's investigated, and 2) I strongly implied he wouldn't be investigated anyway, because the move has been to fall in to support Moore as the President and the Alabama governor has clearly done.

And again, if an ethics investigation is so toothless, why are Republicans so squeamish about investigating Trump?

There are what, three major investigations into Trump?

With little justification.

Speaking for myself, I think the opportunity to investigate a Democrat may be too much to resist. I certainly don't see him having any compulsion to urge an investigation into fellow Republicans.

If Conyers knows his career is toast, what obligation is he under to protect his fellow congressmen who may have also committed sexual misconduct? He may figure, “if I am going down, I will not be going down alone.”

That may well be. It's too early to know how this will play out.

That's a typically Russian troll comment, encourging distrust in the established order, while declaring the entire congess is corrupt.

I find it to be a eyes open and brain not dead comment.

"Moving Swiftly" is calling on an ethics investigation from a committee that doesn't actually do anything. They have secret deliberations, and then about 2% of the time they send a strongly worded letter.

Congressional Ethics Committees Yield Little Punishment - ABC News

If that is the "swift response" you are looking for then consider Roy Moore sufficiently admonished and move on.

THIS is a swift response. On the day before the 115th Congress was sworn in on 3 January 2017...

House Republicans vote behind closed doors to gut ethics office ahead of new Congress

Trump himself has been accused by fifteen women of sexual assault and harassment, and boasted in a tape to grabbing women's genitalia and kissing them without their permission, all of which mirrored the women's specific accusations. It is unlikely should Moore be elected that he will face censure or removal once in the Senate.

Don't forget a woman accused trump of raping her. By conservative standards he is now a rapist.

That too is a weird argument. How do you suppose Moore would be removed without an investigation? Also, you keep making my point. It would be unlikely that Moore would face censure or removal for the same reason that Conyers has nothing to fear from an Ethics investigation... the ethics committee is toothless and doesn't do anything.

nd 2) I strongly implied he wouldn't be investigated anyway, because the move has been to throw their support behind Moore as the President and the Alabama governor have clearly done.

LOL. "Strongly Implied", that is a lame way of saying "I'd like to change my argument now". Also, can you show me where the "move has been to throw their support behind Moore"?

And again, if an ethics investigation is so toothless, why are Republicans so squeamish about investigating Trump?

Sooooo which congressional Ethics committee has jurisdiction over the President, again?

My apologies- Missed your thread and posted one.
The hearing should be public, televised, staffers and others to testify, make the settlement agreement public. Public monies were used to pay her off.

What I want to happen is for their to be hearings on every single one of the settlements this $15 million of taxpayer money hushed up. Sex or not.

Dem lawmaker says House paid out $15M in harassment settlements

Rep. Jackie Speier (D-Calif.) said Tuesday that the House has paid out $15 million in harassment settlements over more than a decade, though a spokesperson later clarified that figure does not only account for sexual harassment claims.

Democrats appear to appreciate the need to set a precedent for how to respond to ongoing allegations of sexual harassment and assault. With any luck this will be consistent and not merely symbolic.

Meanwhile, a child molester is receiving the de facto support of the President and Alabama's governor. OK, she called for a hearing. Now what?

Do you think she will actually have the hearing?

We would all like that, but does the law allow it. I am sure the skunks on the Hill have their asses covered.

The ethics committee is just for show. Nothing's going to happen to Conyers.

Have Republicans called for an investigation or hearing into Trump?

Code word nothing will happen. Right?

His ass is grass. Unlike with Franken, Conyers appears to have a history, and these accusations are coming from a staff member and subordinate who appears to have been punished for rejecting him. That is unacceptable, and while it may be worth doing some due dilligants to confirm whether the accusations are credible as soon as they are confirmed you can expect him to be forced out.

If the Democrats were smart,

That is the first problem. A lot.

they'd move quickly to cleanse themselves, once again showing America and the world the right way to make America great again.

It seems clear to me the parties cannot slip much lower in citizen dislike. I think now might be a ripe time to succeed by really taking the ethically higher road, along with true middle-class economic populism rather than the current Trump charade.

The Dems need to show by doing. By using action! Actions speak louder than words, as we can see with the current administration. They can face the upcoming elections by contrasting their quick & successful actions, against the GOP loud & boisterous hyperbole that never accomplishes much.

Oh, and that "cleansing" above also means jettisoning the Clinton's. Clean house thoroughly, and present the contrast to the voters. I think many will buy, particularly the moderates & independents, and that's how you win elections!

If the Democratic Party were unified and focused on who they are and what they want to become for the citizens of America, they would be in a position to immediately move forward in a meaningful way on sexual harassment involving Congress people. To the GOP's relief the Democratic Party is just as dysfunctional, unfocused, self-serving and sleazy as the GOP.

Now is the Democratic Party's chance, I agree, to exhibit meaningful and unified leadership. I wish them luck with that.

I could not agree with you more regarding the Clintons. The further they are removed from the party the quicker the party can begin to reconcile, if ever. The Clintons are an albatross and in my opinion the Democrats cannot change or move forward with the Clintons tied around its neck.

Two people in the world I sincerely wish would shut the hell up: Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton.

There are no accusations against Trump.

Would it make you feel better if Republicans called for an imaginary investigation, I mean another one, like the Democrats just did?

Isn't that what is important, to make you feel good?

Fifteen women have accused Trump of sexual assault and harassment, but you knew that already. You dismissed Nancy's call for a hearing as not being hard-nosed enough. If that's too lenient for you, can you point to Republicans being properly stringent in their call for something tougher against Trump?

Plus given how massively corrupt Congress is the idea that they care about ethics can only be sold to the very dim.

Term limits. Clean out all these old bought and paid for swamp creatures. The longer they are there the more corrupt they become.
