[h=1]Report: Rep. John Conyers settled complaint over sexual conduct[/h]
WASHINGTON — Michigan Rep. John Conyers settled a complaint in 2015 from a woman who alleged she was fired from his Washington staff because she rejected his sexual advances, BuzzFeed News reported.
The website reported Monday that Conyers' office paid the woman over $27,000 to settle the complaint under a confidentiality agreement.
BuzzFeed also published affidavits from former staff members who said they had witnessed Conyers touching female staffers inappropriately —rubbing their legs and backs — or requesting sexual favors. One former staffer said one of her duties was "to keep a list of women that I assumed he was having affairs with and call them at his request and, if necessary, have them flown in using Congressional resources."

Settlement's are not an admission of guilt, they are as often as not merely a way to keep scandal out of the public eye.

Look at how public allegations of sexual misconduct are coloring the court of public opinion as it is.

Such allegations don't have to be true, their mere existence creates a furor and demand to cease running or step down from office.

I don't disagree with this. I think the media isn't running hard on this, afterall it's source is from the CNN trial balloon surrogate, buzzfeed.

First the 27K should be paid by the congressman not the government.

As to whether he should resign, he will face the voters in 2018. Perhaps we should let them decide.

Firing someone because she rejected his sexual advances seems serious to me. Worse than grabbing someones *****? (for example) Debatable.

There are many other cases along these lines.

He allegedly used public funds to fly in sex partners.
If that is found to be true, he should be held accountable...for the funds and abuse of them.
I don't see that he broke any laws with respect to sexual issue.

What ***** was grabbed? here we have a settlement by an actual victim. lets focus on the topic, not on wishful thinking.

If everyone in Congress is affected by these sexual harassment claims then Trump could lay claim that he cleaned the swamp, if only he didn't also defend Republicans who have similar accusations thrown at them.

I’m so conflicted about this. On the one hand, I think women who wait and pile on may BE exploiting SOMETHING, not even sure what that would be. On the OTHER, I think it’s important we give these women, especially those who pile on, credence by reason of their multitudes. On the other, you’re right, they don’t have to be true to ruin lives. On the other, they don’t have to be proven. And on the OTHER, how does anyone defend themselves against something that happened ten years ago?

The only good that most definitely DOES come from these allegations is to put degenerates on notice. Stop doing that ****! You may get away with it TODAY, but that doesn’t mean you’re safe.

Apparently there’s a congressional oversight committee who investigates and, in many cases, pays out claims to people congressmen have mistreated. They’ve paid out tens of millions of dollars. I think this should routinely be a part of the public record. Lascivious behavior by congress should not be kept hidden in the closet and should have a powerful arm to either prove or disprove these allegations. It would certainly slow down the false ones. But would it also inhibit the REAL ones? Yeah, it probably would. I wonder if that’s its purpose...

That's five "hands" Maggie, you'd need three people to provide that many hands. ;)

I agree there are issues here that need resolution, either by a change in social mores, or some kind of clarification about what actually constitutes misconduct.

But the problem is this as I see it. If there is an opportunity for "payola" or political gain merely by alleging a harm, then people will take advantaqe of that opportunity by alleging false harms or possibly greater harms than actually occurred.

IMO, if there is a real harm one is seeking justice for, then it should be expressed via criminal due process as soon as possible after the actual incident has occurred, barring roadblocks beyond the accuser's control.

Thus IMO most allegations which arise decades after the fact where the delay cannot be reasonably explained, should be taken with a ton of salt.

Where is the evidence that these women are seeking out getting a paycheck? A citizen like me or you wouldn't have the ability to shut up sexual allegations. But yet, these millionaires can give these women $10+ million and they have to shut up. Yes, everyone has a price, but I don't think any woman is seeking money out of this. Especially if they are in the media where their names are easily googled and that's the first thing that pops up. Not their work.

So do you view settlements as an admission of guilt?

I just want the scumbags out. If this guy really used money to shuttle side pieces around, he needs to start writing checks. but, no, I don't..... funny thing is, a settlement kinda says more guilty than an accusation, which your ilk is all about.

I don’t understand your first sentence. More coffee!!

The problem with due process is the statute of limitations. And if we make it too complicated to REPORT, it will inhibit the many truthful accusations from being reported at all. I think in the law it would be said it would have a chilling effect on people coming forward. I’ve heard it often used when a plaintiff sues someone in small claims court who reports to DCFS. Even if the report is untrue, the plaintiff rarely wins unless he/she can prove intentional malice. The courts believe penalizing those who make untrue complaints to DCFS would have a chilling effect, as they call it, on others. Sort of a better safe than sorry defense.

Conyers has had 4 known incidents of allegations of sexual misconduct and were settled according to the leaked documents. In the last paragraph of the Buzzfeed piece it states--

"Conyers’ wife, former Detroit city councilor Monica Conyers, was sentenced to three years in prison over bribery charges in 2010. (One of the documents alleged Conyers began “aggressively acting out his sexual harassment behavior” following this.) Last year the couple renewed their vows. ●"

In 2016 Conyers' chief of staff plead guilty to receiving stolen goods and there are other examples of illegal and unethical behavior from he and his staff over the past decade.

Yet every two years he gets re-elected.

I don't think your edits properly addressed my question. The person in this settlement is not getting more money now that it's been exposed. Please explain why you think most of these women are seeking paychecks and shouldn't be believed?

Lives are being shattered by these accusations. Granted a number of these accusations can be construed as harassment, and maybe should be pursued. Most of what I've heard though, amounts to ****heads using their power to gain sexual favors. No real laws broken, just a bunch of very awkward advances by awkward and self-centered men. Assholes are everywhere. But if the attraction between the sexes is going to be made taboo...we're all fudged.

IMO...until something ILLEGAL is proven, the news media should not be reporting it.

Like I said, this horse-kaka is destroying lives.

Hate to break it to you but sexual harassment is illegal!

Per US Law: It is unlawful to harass a person (an applicant or employee) because of that person's sex.

OK...define "harassment". Is a kiss harassment? How about a touch? Is that harassment? The visage of a naked man. Is that harassment?
Where's the line? How are people to know if their attraction for another is reciprocal, if every advance is considered harassment?
Maybe men should just stop making sexual advances and spend their lives masturbating?

Look...My daughter is a model. She gets come onto constantly. Some advances she likes, some she does not.
That's normal. But if some awkward bugger makes an advance that is... awkward...and there's no real harm done, should she proceed to destroy the guy's life?

If you don't know, please do your own research. Then compare what the men did in some of these cases. In some cases the masturbating came with.

And in some, these men did...nothing really. So we destroy them for being odd? Horny?
Look...I get the whole..."that's gross" thing. What I don't get is this rush to persecute men for being awkward and gross.

Lets assume a powerful woman calls her male assistant into her room, and while there, she undresses and makes sexual advances towards him. Should he go public with this?

There are certain issues I have with this report. 1) No one knows who the woman was, since everything is redacted. 2) The initial article was from Buzzfeed, which is not known for it's accuracy. The source of their information was an alt-right blogger known for conspiracy theories and extreme partisanship. The source of the information and the chain of evidence is suspect at the very least. I would need a much more reliable source and chain of evidence. The line of evidence for the accusation does not disprove the accusation, but it certainly is not a credible link of evidence when you chase the source down the rabbit hole.

So then trump should resign for his settlement over trump university then right?
