Former state Sen. Ralph Shortey has agreed to plead guilty to a child sex trafficking offense for offering to pay a 17-year-old boy for sexual "stuff" last March.

In exchange for his guilty plea, U.S. prosecutors have agreed to drop three child pornography counts against him.

Why is it that the people who scream "Family Values" the loudest turn out to be the biggest perverts? This creep spent a lot of time, when not pushing for imposing "moral values" on others, posting ads on Craigslist for meeting up with young boys to have sex with. He also had child pornography on his computer. Now he will be going to prison for at least 10 years. In the future, if someone asks me what a pervert is, I will hand him a dictionary and tell him to look up "politician".

Having sex with a 17 year old perfectly legal, paying a 17 year old for sex and it’s sex trafficking with a 10 year minimum.

Moral values hypocrisy seems to pale in comparison to the legal hypocrisy

Sex trafficking is a modern-day form of slavery in which a commercial sex act is induced by force, fraud, or coercion, or in which the person induced to perform such an act is under the age of 18 years.

In the case of voluntary non-commercial sexual activity with a person considered legally old enough to consent, the motivation of the younger participant is a willing interest in the older participant.

In the case of commercial sexual activity, the issue is selling one's body to anyone who can meet the price, placing themselves at risk of harm through intimate acts with multiple strangers as well as control by criminal sex rings.

While both may seem willing consent, they differ significantly in both motivation and risk of harm.

I am not opposed to legalized prostitution. I support prostitution that is regulated as a business so as to protect clients and workers from medical issues, violence, abuse, and other harms.

All participants must be legal adults, able to enter into contracts and be protected by law.

Minors run a greater risk of being exploited and abused for profit.

The guy is going to get punished for certain. At least 10 years in the pen.

But his wife and four daughters are the ones who will really be punished. How do you even begin to tell a daughter the reason her father is in prison.

What the hell is wrong with people who risk so much. Then part of the bigger problem is a boatload of losers willing to defend this type of crap. You have the "it is just locker room talk" or " that was decades ago". We have a huge ocean of enablers for these morons.

Why would a footnote in history be taught to children? You are aware US History is not taught until Jr High? I am quite sure the current Pres is not used in classrooms as a model of integrity in a leader.

A 'family values', anti-gay Republican politician cheated on his wife with a man.

What is the age of consent in OK?

And, are all "Johns" who pick up 17 year old hookers charged with the same thing?

Thanks for that. So, this kid was 17 and he asked for money. When the guy asked if he'd do sexual stuff for it, the kid said he would.

I can see a prostitution infraction here -- but the kid appears to have solicited the guy in exchange for money.

Now, I wonder if the "child" porn was also truly children. Or, if it was pics of other teens of consenting age who posted their picks.

I'm finding all these cases of sexual misconduct to be bordering on the absurd lately.

this guy is a piece of scum.

that is like down here one county constantly runs child sex stings. they get doctors, lawyers, and other high professional people and i think they even got a cop.
these people are sick and need to be locked up.

i think the last one they nabbed like 150 people or something stupid like that.

How do you explain that to your wife.
