Keystone Pipeline leaks 210,000 gallons of oil in South Dakota

I am sure none of you drive cars. None of you use electricity. None of you use anything that requires energy generation from coal or oil or atomic energy. You dont use solar powered items because even they are made from by products of fossil fuel sources. And you dont use steel or aluminum.

Oh wait...wait. You DO. And you think the magic energy fairies all delivery the fuel sources safely from their source to destination in a clean and Eco-friendly manner leaving only a trail of rainbows in their wake.

It's all done by pixie dust.............right?

If I am not mistaken(again), aren't most of the companies involved with the tar sands publicly traded?

There are a lot of peoples 401K's that are involved here as well.

There are plenty of places for 401k money to go.

I say build a refinery near he source, rather than piping it such great distances.

The problem with that is there are numerous refinery products, some of which are more dangerous and/or harder to handle than the crude. So, chemical plants collect around refineries so some of these products move but s short distance.

I think its a massive pipe, and pipes have the possibility of leaking. Pipes can also be fixed when they leak, and the oil can be cleaned up to lessen its impact.

That's what we do.

This is simply just another stupid attempt at sticking it to Trump, and frankly these little jabs are laughably sad at best.

Actually its about the keystone folks saying "No down sides" and lying about such things.

Pipelines are likely still the safest, most environmentally friendly, and economically efficient way to move oil. These things will happen, just like car accidents.

The Kochs are investing millions into Climate Change denial through their Heartland Institute - a page right out of the Tobacco Industry's 1950s/1960s misinformation campaign.

Yah except they sponsored a climate change denier to go through all the peer reviewed studies to try to prove them wrong. Instead he came to the conclusion that not only is climate change real but mostly manmade.

I agree. Should the Canadian gov't make that a requirement for companies who work the tar sands?
'Course, then there's the refined product to move...

Trump gets blamed for things that aren't his fault sometimes. But Trump owns this mistake.

They absolutely can be. Should be. And if they were always built to the latest and greatest standards and available tech, they would be much safer. But they are not. They get waivers for safety requirements for smaller size pipelines. They aren't required to have auto shut off valves in enough locations, so they don't. The maintenance and monitoring requirements aren't enforced and so aren't followed. Inspectors are always in short supply so inspections are waived.
Pipelines are much safer than trucks or rail. But they could be far safer and reliable than they are. I've posted the numbers for failures before. It is easy enough to google it. There are literally hundreds every year.

Who knew oil pipelines could be so complicated!

Actually its about the keystone folks saying "No down sides" and lying about such things.

I like how people can just look way too far into what others say, and someone believe it overwrites the reality we live in. They could have meant something else entirely by saying no downside, yet everyone wants to believe they meant "This pipe will never leak" which on its face is an absurd premise.

So I guess in the end, we should get all the groups together why want to stop such constructions and operations, and ask them to come up with a solution for the growing needs. Maybe when they discover there are few options, they will dial back their complaints some.

Who know... They might actually come up with something viable!

Yes, progressives are the masters of lies and deceptions. capitalists and conservatives are no match for the progressive and liberal lies.

Please don't get me started on car accidents, as more than 90% of them are preventable if we just enforced better driving habits.

That's for sure.

In my years of driving, I've seen the skill level of the act of driving itself fall rather dramatically in the recent decade, and the number of distracted drivers, playing with their phones increase remarkably.

I'm pretty sure that by this point in the thread that someone had noticed that the leak was from an older section of the pipeline, for one, and that the newer proposed pipeline probably isn't in the ground yet. Might be a good reason why a new pipeline is needed? Obama admin delayed, delayed, delayed, and the old one had a leak maybe?

That is some serious grasping at straws. The pipeline is 7 years old. Pipelines are expected to last upwards of 50 years.

If true that the pipeline is only 7 years old, that's a problem. You are right. Pipelines should last much longer than that for one, and if there's mismanagement that didn't prevent the leak, as it should have, that's a problem too. Both better be addressed and remediated.

Why is it cons tend to think the best comeback is "I know you are but what am I?" Why is this?

I'm only saying that conservatives get caught lying more often, because they aren't as good at it.

Sure. Whatever defense that keeps that membrane sealed tightly on that bubble you are in.
