A bipartisan group of US senators announced a bill Thursday to improve reporting in the instant background system called the "Fix NICS Act of 2017, in the wake of the Texas mass shooting perpetrated by a person whose violent criminal record should have prevented him from buying guns.

This is a good step in the right direction. I strongly believe in the Second Amendment, but common sense background checks, and denying weapons to those who have violent criminal records or histories of severe mental illness should be a part of it. Never forget that, along with Constitutional rights come Constitutional responsibilities. Will crooks and nuts still be able to get guns? Yes, but it will be fewer crooks and nuts getting them, and if that prevents even one mass shooting, then the effort is well worth it. Thank you, Senator Cornyn, for co-sponsoring this bill. You will have my vote next election.

This is just another slippery slope to a full gun ban. Their true agenda is obvious. The RINOs supporting this should be run out of office.

So, you're in favor of passing something already law. Meaningless.

What exactly do you think this does to make it a step in the right direction?

It doesn't change anything about reporting requirements -- they remain the same. No new information is required to be reported to the NCIS system. All it does is require federal agencies to send reports that they're in compliance with already-existing law to the Attorney General.

In other words, it creates a bureaucratic paper mill, but it doesn't actually do anything substantive. The most it does is prohibit federal agencies from paying bonuses to employees -- excluding overtime -- if they don't turn in the paperwork. It doesn't expand background checks. It doesn't keep guns out of the hands of any new class of persons.

So, as things go, it's harmless, but it's also pretty much pointless. It lets politicians say "we did something" without actually doing anything.

I don't know about running them out of office. It is being dishonest, however.

Common sense is a good measure to go by but should always be checked. The numbers do not really support gun control as the best way to stop killings

Why is this a good step? The DOD failed to submit the shooters criminal record to the FBI that would have kept him from buying the weapons he had. Don't need a new a new law just follow the law already in effect!

My answer to this is going to be quite nuanced. Australia had a huge problem with mass shootings. They instituted gun control, and the incidents went way down. But here is the problem.... They took guns from law abiding citizens, who were completely innocent. Here in America, we should be careful and watchful, lest politicians should ever attempt to introduce Australian remedies on us. We are not Australia. Owning guns is a Constitutional right. However, we should protect that right for all law abiding citizens, while still ensuring that violent criminals and mentally insane people do not get access to them. This can be done in several ways. Closing loopholes should be number ONE. Those who provide a gun to someone who isn't allowed to have one should do hard time in prison. And double the prison time for those caught illegally possessing a weapon. Will these steps end the problem? No, but it should reduce it somewhat. And somewhat is better than nothing at all.

Well maybe a person with a mental disorder that owns a gun should live right next door to you. Maybe you should have to work together at the post office so that when he goes postal, you'll be right there to shoot him.

Wait, I thought that all guns in private hands had already been confiscated by Obama. That's why we're all posting from UN/FEMA death camps.
