I was hiking in the Odenwald a few years back. On a hill before you came down into the village there was an ancient gallows. The inscription said that in the year 16something or else a man was condemned by the court and hanges for the theft of a bunch of turnips. That gave me something to think about as I continued along. It seems interesting that under other technological and economic circumstances societies would impose such different punishment.

You believe they stole because the chinese government said so? 3 kids were arrested for one pair of sunglasses. You dont find this story at all...

I just saw an article about the penalty, it isn't like they cut people's hands off. It is a 3 year minimum 10 year max sentence. Doesn't seem too harsh, what am I missing?

Presidents typically advocate for Americans held in oppressive countries. Obama did it. Clinton did it.

Trump doesn’t get extra credit for doing what is expected.

They have them on video....Taking stuff from 3 different stores...Maybe it was a prank?....Unfortunately the Chinese will make an example of them but they'll go home soon enough...Will UCLA keep them on the team?

What would Trump do? What would he do if the shoe was on the other foot(as long as it wasn't stolen)? He already claims that China is stealing from us (jobs). He would rollover. And If they were from Syria or Yemen?

It's up the to Chinese courts to decide the punishment, not someone on a US forum.

If you're so stupid you steal a flag in NK or sunglasses in China, you deserve what you get. It's not about minority or ghetto idiots, it's about stupid, and I can work up no sympathy for stupid.

Lol, every year, Americans are arrested all over the world for being drunk in public, stealing stuff from hotels, etc. Trump decides to step in the case of 3 assholes who weren't taught that stealing isn't good. I be he thinks this will get him the black vote in 2020.

Ten years in a Chinese prison for theft sounds pretty rough. On the upside they would probably be giants there if they had been forced to stay.

Average height in China is 5 6" or so.
