The Catalan independence movement is spreading to France, while also getting intertwined with other separatist movements across Europe:

The controversy surrounding the struggle for Catalan independence from Spain has crossed over the border, as 'Northern Catalans' demanded freedom from France.

As the struggle for Catalan independence from Spain continues to venture into unknown territory, a French region across the border have demanded a united Catalan state.

Around 2,000 protesters took to the streets yesterday in Perpignan, southwestern France, to demand their own independence referendum.

Activists at the peaceful march revealed their hopes for a 'united Catalan state' that would break apart Spain and France - amid fears of an independence domino effect in the EU.

People held esteladas - Catalan independence flags - during the massive demonstration in Perpignan, under the motto 'We are Northern Catalonia, we want to decide'.

The demonstration in the Pyrénées region marked the anniversary of a 1659 Treaty, where Catalonia was taken over by French and Spanish control.

One protester said: "I am for democracy, for freedom and for defending the freedom of Catalonia North and South. We are here to support political prisoners."

Another added: "We are behind the protesters in Catalonia and I am very proud of the mobilization here in Perpignan."

Many voiced their frustration at the local town hall for refusing to erect the Catalan esteladas, after councillors feared for to its "extreme politicitization".

Oh well, time for EU to get out the tear gas, stun batons and water canons while making mass-arrests. Heh - but EUrocrats will still take time out to call Putin a despot, while keeping straight faces .

The ECB runs everything and "money talks, bull**** walks," and this will go nowhere. Greece is an example of what protests can do. Nothing. They should ally with Putin while they have the chance. It's about business and banking alliances and they have nothing to sell. No power. Putin would be a cleveer ploy with a little power. Greece should for sure.

I suspect you are probably correct, though, the Spaniards are rather split in acrimonious anger. These things can get out of control for no visible reason other than it being the wrong moment. That happened to the regime in the GDR today being the anniversery. Or think of the Arab Spring.

Sigh.. has nothing to do with the EU....

That doesn't seem accurate. These regions are seeking to stay in the EU while leaving their country. Were they that eager to leave when there was no EU? This one is a bit different because it is two regions that used to be together way back when, or at least the French side is trying to piggy back off the Spanish side.

Again, this has nothing to do with the EU. The EU has stated many times that this is an internal issue and any "region" that leaves a country to become an independent nation, will have to apply to not only the EU, but every other international organisation out there. That certain alt right types and Russia want to link this to the EU, does not mean it has anything to do with the EU at all.

This one is a bit different because it is two regions that used to be together way back when, or at least the French side is trying to piggy back off the Spanish side.

They have never been "together". The French parts of "Catalonia" use to be part of Spain long ago, and was lost in war. And at the time, Catalonia a county in Aragon, and part of the Spanish state. Catalonia has never really been independent, which is why the whole Catalonian independence drive is a load of bull**** if it is based on this view.

The sad part, is that it seems that the whole Catalan issue, is now being driven by false news coming out of Russia...

Russia is everywhere, according to the EUrophiles. What will you do without the Russian Bogeyman?

Catalonia has been trying for independence from Spain for at least three centuries.

No.. some people in Catalonia has tried it for various reasons. Some wanted independence, some wanted more autonomy and some even wanted to rejoin France.

EU is behaving like an OSTRICH while Spain tramples on the Catalan right to self-determination. How barbaric. Welcome to George Orwell's "EU" - it should really be the title of a political satire. And you smug EUrophiles are all happily looking the other way, nonchalantly claiming "why should we interfere?" Exactly how far are you willing to take your ostrich stance? If people were being slaughtered in the streets by an anti-independence crackdown from Madrid, would you just turn a blind eye? What does it take to jump-start the EU's conscience? Or is it perhaps that you don't really have any? It was always just a charade.

Given EM a BREAK, the EU at this point is struggling to survive, it does not have the bandwidth for this, and once these folks get away with it many more will follow. Also, I am pretty sure the major EU leaders and Obama all were in agreement about 5 years back that there should be no further changes in the globes lines, I dont see where the agitators could have expected a different result now after the problems of the Eu have multiplied.
