LePage's veto just got overruled by the people of Maine.

Maine just resoundingly became the first state to expand Medicaid by ballot initiative

Less than two months after Republicans' latest effort to repeal the Affordable Care Act imploded, a purple state just made a decidedly blue-state move to essentially expand Obamacare.

Maine Gov. Paul LePage vetoed a bipartisan legislative deal to expand Medicaid under the Affordable Care Act at least five times. Since Republicans took control of Washington in January, they've spent more than half the year trying to repeal Obamacare with proposals that would have drastically cut Medicaid. But Maine's Sen. Susan Collins (R) was one of the defining “no” votes that ultimately ended the GOP efforts, saying the plans would pull the rug out from too many in her state.

Sadly Medicade is an unsustainable program. The fact that people voted for more free stuff, and have the Federal government pick up the bill is not really shocking is it?

If the fed gov is picking up the bill, it's not exactly 'free stuff', now is it?

Words. Meanings. Have.

Well, considering nobody in Maine has a job, this isn't surprising.

I don't really see why a State shouldn't regulate its own health care.

How do you figure? Maine's unemployment rate was around 3.7% at last check.

That is why they think they can afford the largesse.

U6 unemployment rate is at 8.2, which is .6 below the national average at this time - and nearly half of those are employed part time, judging by the difference from U5.

In summary, Maine is some pretty hot **** right now, good on them.

Free to the people voting for this subsidy.

Understanding. Has. Meaning!

They voted to have healthcare. And it's sustainable if you just get the "can't do" republicans out of the way.

Well that stupid one-off insult just got esploded.

Go and prove that all those who voted don't pay taxes.

And it should use its own money to do so.

That's what happens when you open your mouth and **** falls out without even trying to be accurate. They are so used to people believing just anything they tell them, and don't realize that sometimes it backfires on them.

It's also telling that the first go to is to say that they fellow Americans are lazy worthless people. Seems to be a right wing meme perpetrated by the right these days. They are the hate Americans first crowd.

Happily you are dead wrong. Maintaining the health of our citizens will always be "sustainable" or we fail as a nation. If the wealthiest nation in history cannot do what every other western nation can, the problem is not Medicaid.

Oh, I couldn't agree more. "Let them go hungry." "Let them go without medical care." "Let them go without an education." "Let's force them to have a baby they don't want, and then not help them take care of the baby."

Perhaps you would like to see a VAT in the U.S. So you can follow in the footsteps our your EU brethren of higher taxes on the low and middle class, higher unemployment and lower GDP growth over decades.

Perhaps some other form of revenue would be needed but not until we reverse the historically low taxes on the wealthy first. Our best economic growth occurred when taxes on the rich were double what they are now.

All "free stuff" from those lazy freeloading Americans.

Maine's governor won't expand Medicaid despite approval of ballot measure

Maine Gov. Paul LePage (R) said Wednesday his administration will not expand Medicaid until the state finds a way to pay for it, a day after voters approved a ballot measure to broaden the program.

Maine's House Speaker Sara Gideon (D) said in a statement that the legislature would implement the Medicaid expansion measure, and will fight the governor if he tries to intervene.

"The legislature will move swiftly to fund Medicaid expansion as required by law. The governor and DHHS commissioner will implement its requirements as well, as they are obligated to do," Gideon said.

“Any attempts to illegally delay or subvert this law will not be tolerated and will be fought with every recourse at our disposal. Mainers demanded affordable access to healthcare yesterday, and that is exactly what we intend to deliver," she added.

Not sure that's how Democracy is supposed to work.

We got there 80 years ago with Social Security, then progressed from there. It’s the way of the modern world. We all get something that we and other pay for. We like it that way. Democracy in action.

Its not quite what he said. LePage is saying that he will not sign it unless the legislature fully funds it. Not as it is now, but as it will be after the feds begin to cutback their support (this is part of the plan and the reason why many states refused to accept the expansion).
LePage has also said he will not approve tax hikes to pay for it, nor will he accept cuts in senior services, supports for disabled to pay for it. The governor has long argued that the expansion will devastate the Maine budget.
