Alt-right Twitter blogger Jenna Abrams unmasked as creation of Russian 'troll factory'

“To those people, who hate the Confederate flag. Did you know that the flag and the war wasn’t about slavery, it was all about money,” read one of her tweets.

While the tweets appeared to be coming from a young American woman with right-wing views, Jenna Abrams didn’t actually exist.

Since being exposed, both Twitter and Google have suspended accounts associated with @Jenn_Abrams.

Last month, an internet troll who said he worked at the “troll farm” and was tasked with disrupting the US election by watching Netflix series House of Cards to learn about the American political system.

It is good that companies are tracking this stuff down. We will see many of the internet famous exposed as complete creations of foreign governments. What's interesting is that many people will not care about this because they agree with these points of views. We have had arguments spanning pages with real people where they are not capable of discussing the primary sources. These are the same folks who buy into what they read on the internet.

I do not see this kind of stuff coming to an end unless there are deep investigations into each and every one of the accounts. The pressure is on for companies like Twitter and Facebook to avoid becoming propaganda machines. This year seems like a test run for the Russians. We are seeing the first signs that the internet can and will be weaponized by governments.

The President himself has retweeted these types of accounts all the time.

Seems like they are doing a "deep investigation" or they wouldn't know that Jenna Abrams was a fake.

Plenty of peeps here that just don't get it [or refuse to get it for purely partisan reasons].

Well there's a few things i see at play here.

One is that we are politically vulnerable to confirmation bias when we are prepared to escalate partisanship. We're going to have to learn to treat the other side of the aisle with the minimum of respect that every American deserves.

Another is that foreign governments have intelligence access in to and out of our country through the internet. That sounds like a ****ing mess to try to manage.

Yet another is the use of big data. In the early days of the internet, we lacked the informational and processing capabilities to build 325 million voter profiles. That is no longer the case. What bothers me about this is that they can individually-tailor political propaganda to tug at the exact heart strings of the recipient without their knowledge. For example, a candidate could send a video where they support gun control to one voter, and a video where they oppose gun control to another. We should get what we vote for, we should have clear policy expectations for our candidates, and we shouldn't be fed lies for the sake of political manipulation.

Lastly, the EC. Unfortunately, the two party system combined with the EC makes us very vulnerable in the sense that our presidential elections can be swayed by small populations in swing states. They can leverage confirmation bias and big data to manipulate those vulnerable populations, targeting only a small set of voters with a surgical propaganda campaign.
