Democrats Work To Stop Trump From Launching Nuclear Strike on North Korea

Democratic Senators are trying to prevent President Donald Trump from being able to launch a nuclear first strike against North Korea.

Senators Chris Murphy, Corey Booker, and Brian Schatz will introduce a bill that would give Congress alone the ability to call in a first strike after a vote, Murphy announced Wednesday.

“Trump's North Korea threats are real,” Senator Murphy of Connecticut wrote on Twitter late Wednesday, stating they intend to constrain the president’s executive authority to use nuclear weapons.

Oh look, it's Congressional TDS...

The Democrats are stuck on stupid.

Not only can't they take launch authority away from the president, publically stating they can sends a very dangerous message to Kim.

I seriously doubt the POTUS can actually launch a nuclear weapon by himself. I realize why people freak out about it, but if it happens it won't be a one person decision.

I believe the SD has to agree with the POTUS for launch ..........

And there are several other people down the line that have to perform actions. The way people talk about this stuff is like the POTUS literally has big red button on his desk or something.

The bill says first strike. It would be dangerous if they stated any launch as it would undermine MAD, but no president should launch a first strike.

I don't care what it says. I stand by my initial comment.

I don't think they have the authority to do that anyway.
the control of the football authority is in the executive branch and is a power of the executive branch not congress.

it doesn't matter what the bill says. they have no control over the football.
however a person is under 0 obligation to fulfill an order such as that.

there are protections in place.

It's right next to the big red phone that goes directly to The Kremlin.

I was pointing out that first strike which the bill states is different than taking away complete control over the nuclear arsenal.
...but.....why exactly does one person or the nation should depend on others saying "no, I won't follow that order" when it comes to nuclear weapon first strikes?

according to the video, it could happen pretty quick; don't know the validity of the video

I thought only Congress could declare war? Isn't it in the Constitution?

Yeah, I'm not sure taking that power from the hands of one person is a bad idea at all. Never really gave it much thought but now...

an interesting point about this video beside the fact they are discussing Trump asking about using nukes is, host Joe Scarborough is a Republican :shock:

Arguably it falls under their power over declarations of war. A pre-emptive nuclear strike is clearly an act of war.

They do have control over starting a war.

word ............... members of Congress wouldn't even know .............

You are completely wrong. The system was designed for speed, not decision making. One man and just one man can start the nuclear war, and that is trump

What evidence do you have that he cannot?

OIr are you simply assuming the most unbalanced human being to ever occupy the White House is going to behave rationally all of a sudden like.

If anybody wonders why I debate whether some kid should be allowed to dress up as Moana for Halloween or whether the iphone is better without the headphone jack, this topic is why.
