The Washington Post broke this story four hours ago, but I've run out of free reads, so here is what CNN says:

Hillary Clinton's presidential campaign and the Democratic National Committee helped fund research that led to the now-infamous dossier of allegations about President Donald Trump and Russia, a source familiar with the matter told CNN. Report: Clinton campaign, DNC helped fund dossier research - CNNPolitics

Hillary Clinton's campaign paid for dirty dossier on Trump | Daily Mail Online

I'm glad the facts are finally coming out.

I guess (since this is where the bar has been set) the question is "is it illegal"?

That I don't know.

But aren't "dirty tricks" pretty much acceptable so long as you aren't caught?

Ask Roger Stone, one of the Nixon "Rat F***ers."

Supposedly it was the GOP who funded it first to derail Trumps run but once he became the nominee they cut of the money spigot to the company doing it. That company then shopped it to the Clinton and they picked it up. Political as usual in Washington. Trump is guilty of the same kind of dirty politics. Look at the outrageous lies he peddled about Cruz.

As shocking as it is to learn that the oppo research was bought by the oppo, the real mystery is why this information wasn't released to the public before the election.

No but they are par for the course in elections. If the dirt is there, seems like everyone, at every level, looks for it.

It wasnt used...so what is your point?

OTOH...is the dirt true?

So Trump paid for similar dirty tricks? Links please?

It wasn't used?! So we all just imagined the Buzzfeed news on January 10th?

Because it was plagued with stupidity. This is the same dossier that said trump paid girls to pee on Obama's favorite mattress and claimed a Trump campaign official met with Russian spies but never bothered checking if the guy they were tailing was actually the Trump guy or someone with a similar name.

They tried getting the major networks to distribute but only got a bite from Buzzfeed.

This was ALSO the document, stupid content and all, that showed up in the FBI FISA warrant requests.

This stinks as bad of corruption as the Russian uranium deal... and it ALL points to seedy dealings between Clinton and Russia.

Old news...

What gets me is everyone who agreed with Pres. Trump's excuse in his son's willingness to accept potentially damaging information on Hillary Clinton from Russian operatives while claiming it happens all the time in politics are now tripping all over themselves attempting to claim that the DNC(/Hillary?) picking up where Jeb Bush left off is now so underhanded.

So, it fine to accept opposition research on your opponent if it happens to just fall in your lap from your geo-political foe, but not okay if you pay an investigative entity to conduct said research...something the POTUS himself has said is a common practice he was willing to allow his campaign to participate in?

Am I understanding this right?

If the *****grabbing tape didn't turn off his voters, it's hard to imagine why the piss tape would.

But it WAS used. This dossier showed up in the FISA warrant requests by the FBI.

When? I dont remember hearing about it in the media during the campaign.

After the election :doh

Before the inauguration. During the campaigns. :doh The dossier was opposition research during the election cycle and was being talked about for weeks before Buzzfeed decided to run with scurrilous rumors.

From Wiki:

The dossier was produced as part of opposition research during the 2016 U.S. presidential election. The research was initially funded by Republicans who did not want Trump to be the Republican Party nominee for president. After Trump won the primaries, the Democratic lawyer Marc Elias took over the funding;[5] and, following Trump's election, Steele continued working on the report, with financing from Glenn R. Simpson of Fusion GPS,[6] and passed on the information to British and American intelligence services. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Donald_Trump–Russia_dossier

Well how come I never heard of it during the campaign? Not that I heard everything. But ALMOST everything was plastered all over FB.

Wasnt very effective then, was it? Why is this a story now?

Monday morning QBing. They thought all of this intel gathered from Russian government sources would sink Trump. They got the FBI to use it in a FISA warrant request. CNN and Buzzfeed used it to bolster the Trump/Russia scandal.

They used the details and hinted at the details for months and used it as a "official documents" type of source.

Hell, go back to the breaking story from Buzzfeed as it was handled here on DP to see how it was used.

But in a way sure, it was like most of what has been thrown at trump: Heavy in emotional garbage, lacking in actual substance.

Well, you did. the contents were floated as accusations during the campaign, and the FBI investigation and the FISA warrants you heard about used the dossier. You just didn't know the source and until now we didn't have a definitive report on who actually funded it.

What are you talking about? They knew what was going on and they didn't tell us. That goes for all of them. The Clinton campaign, the Obama administration, Comey and the rest of the FBI, the intelligence apparatus, and on and on. They all knew what Trump was and what his campaign was up to. They knew who his benefactors were and the actions they were taking to prop him up. They knew the dangers he posed to our national security.

And none of them bothered to tell us before the election. This is beyond outrageous.

You heard about it yuou just didn't know you were hearing about it.

But here is one of the stories confirming that the Steele dossier was used in the FISA warrants for Carter Page:

Report: FBI used dossier to bolster FISA warrant case on Carter Page - Business Insider

But then the true believers have flitted from one broken conspiracy to another over the last year so most who were pushing Carter Page as the smoking gun back then have forgotten his name at this point.

OK, well as I wrote...seems like business as usual in DC.

If it was out there, it's fair game.

I too don't understand what the fuss is about with this, suddenly opposition research is criminal?!?!?

I think with how badly Trump is getting stomped they are desperate to spin up anything they can even if it doesn't really make sense. If you browse Fox news they have been grasping at straws badly for weeks now trying to turn everything around and focus on Clinton.
