Needless to say Non Starters were laid out- or what you can call poison pills

If negotiations fail, does it go to Congress to withdraw?
Does the President have the power to withdraw?

My personal opinion- As Congress passed it, it would be up to Congress to withdraw from NAFTA.

The impact on business/jobs/US-Canada-Mexico economic impact would be substantial.

If NAFTA is cancelled, then the tariffs that it replaced would then imposed.
Some are quite low, and others are significantly higher

In recent weeks, the Trump administration has sparred with American businesses that support Nafta and pushed for significant changes that negotiators from Mexico and Canada say are nonstarters. All the while, the president has continued threatening to withdraw the United States from the trade agreement, which he has maligned as the worst in history.

President Trump is reportedly mulling an executive order to withdraw the United States from the North American Free Trade Agreement, a major trade deal with Canada and Mexico that reshaped broad sections of the U.S. economy after going into effect in 1994. But it might not be as easy to get out of NAFTA as Trump may think.

US- Canada auto pact
Basically from what I recall and very simplistic,a 1 for 1- cars sold in Canada, companies had to have assembled 1 here.

We should tell Canada this:
The United States will give them 1 freebie on whatever they want if they take Justin Bieber back and never allow him to return to the United States.

No deal- heard he is applying for US Citizenship- Thank God

What? He is coming to a country with no single payer insurance?
Taxes. Its all about the taxes.

The president cannot unilaterally withdraw from a duly signed and ratified treaty. Such a treaty becomes, under the Constitution, the law of the land. The president must obey it.

Oh he can afford it.

A few years ago there was a big controversey in France when Gerard Depardiu decamped to some town in Beligium about 20 feet from French border and took up residency. He was quite open that he was trying to avoid French taxes.

Actually it is unknown whether he could or not. Section 125 of the Trade Act of 1974 suggests he might be able to, but it has never been tested in court, so who knows.

Pretty glad we got that free trade pact with Europe signed. They'll probably keep their word.

I am sure he could write an EO or two that would effectively neuter NAFTA and take a few years to clear up in court

Yep- consider lumber.
We constantly win at NAFTA and the WTO and yet we lose.
Jimmy Carter made a video about a small timber producer as his family has, making a small profits based upon a small timber owner as his family is. Small owners of timber lots cannot make a decent profit

That would be true when competing against large forestry owners ( Govts- both US and Canada) timber rights/ownership.
The Canadian Govt- Prov as well have more forests available to them for harvesting then the US has.
Basic market principles apply-( for Repubs) over supply/availability of a resource depresses prices. We in Canada have that.

One thing that many are not aware of- when the US 1st started with lumber duties, Canadian companies started purchasing US companies. Canadian companies own a substantial portion of US lumber companies.

Screw. That. I'd rather be broke and unemployed. ;)

Said it once, I'll say it again: Canada is by far your best trading partner, with the second highest trade volume and by far the lowest trade deficit compared with the rest of your top 5, while having a fraction of the population of even the next smallest country.

My question is, how did NAFTA get prioritized, given, well, China?? I thought Trump was all tough talk about China in the election...
