Severe weather battered the U.S. economy in September, leading to the first job losses since 2010, the government reported on Friday.

The labor market lost 33,000 jobs last month, though the unemployment rate fell to 4.2 percent, the lowest in 16 years.

Major hurricanes Harvey, Irma and Maria last month devastated parts of Texas and Florida and all of Puerto Rico, weighing heavily on jobs.

Economists say the monthly decline is temporary and the underlying job market remains healthy.

The September report was a strange brew of bad and good data.

Restaurants and bars were hit hardest by September’s storms with a sharp 105,000-job drop in the sector.

Mark Hamrick, Bankrate.com senior economic analyst, said “The Wizard of Oz” comes to mind when examining the latest report, specifically the “pay no attention to the man behind the curtain” line.

“Because of the impacts from hurricanes and flooding, the decline reported in September payrolls doesn’t carry weight this time around,” Hamrick said.

your own article says you are wrong.

THAT'S how you hand someone their ass!!!

THAT'S how you hand someone their ass!!!

there is a lot of rebuilding that has to occur in places more so like houston parts of FL
and then PR needs an entire new rebuild.

that is going to take a ton of money and the demand for labor and material is going to skyrocket.

a lot of people are laid off while businesses rebuild and repair.

you op is meaningless.

the article proves you wrong. just another TDS tirade.
read the article you linked to.

i even copied and pasted it for you, and you still didn't read it because it gets in the way of your TDS rant.
the economists in the article say you are wrong.

No, read it all the way through and I know exactly what it said, but conservatives didn't accept these excuses when Obama was in office, and so you don't get to use them today. President Obama had bad weather too. He still didn't let jobs go negative. Job growth in this country has been lower over the last three months than it was the year previously. Blame the weather all you want to this is Trump's economy.

you didn't read it or blatantly and dishonestly ignored every single part that says you were wrong.
all you can do now is stamp your feet. go right ahead it is there for everyone to see in black and white.

but since you missed it the first time i will post it for you again.

No, the problem is that apparently, you didn't read my OP. Hurricanes and snow storms happened during President Obama's administration as well. And while they hurt job numbers, they never sent those numbers negative. The economy over the last three months is trending downward. It's still doing okay, but it's not growing as well as it has over the last 7 years.

Furthermore when bad weather would hurt job growth under President Obama conservatives refused to accept that as an excuse and continued to try and put 100% of the blame on Obama. Fair is fair. If you want to blame Obama for slow job growth even when it's not his fault, then Trump has to accept blame for Job losses even when it's not 100% his own fault.

There was NOTHING like what we've seen over the last year. In the 40+ years I've lived in Cent. Oregon, that was the worst winter and the worst summer (smoke from fires) I can remember. It has substantially impacted the economy around here as we've had far fewer tourists coming through. Had it not been for the eclipse, things would have been dismal and not just poor.

Wait.... so now all of a sudden rebuilding infrastructure can create jobs? That's weird because when President Obama passed the Stimulus package that was designed to create jobs by improving our nations infrastructure Republicans said it wouldn't work, and it was just redirecting money that could be used for hiring in some other sector of the economy. Which is it? Were conservatives lying then or are they lying now?

Sounds like a broken window fallacy to me.....

What is the broken window fallacy?

Of course liberals blamed the weather for poor job growth under President Obama, and it is perfectly valid to do so when the majority of economic analysts are saying the exact same thing. But there's tow problems here. First, conservatives didn't accept that excuse under President Obama so they don't get to use it under Trump. Second, even when weather hurt job numbers under Obama they didn't send them negative. Over the last three months job growth numbers have consistantly been getting weaker even when there haven't been hurricanes.

The economy is still doing okay thanks almost entirely to the good work President Obama did for the previous seven years. We had over 80 consecutive months of job growth regardless of weather patterns. That streak is not broken, and it happened under Trump's watch.

Congress drives the economy, not the President. The market knows this and it knows that Dem. congresses are bad for business. When there is a Dem congress in power or the market sees it coming, the smart people "hunker down". When there's a Rep. congress or the market sees one coming, they open up and start expanding.

you didn't read it or blatantly and dishonestly ignored every single part that says you were wrong.

No, conservatives blatantly and dishonestly ignored every single thing that says they were wrong under Obama. Therefore they don't get to use those excuses under Trump. Furthermore even under Obama we never lost jobs as a result of weather, and overall the job growth of the last three months has slowed down as compared with the previous year regardless of weather patterns. You're the one ignoring reality here bub.

please understand the argument you are referring too first before making comments that have nothing to do with it.
you won't look so bad.

your still doing. if you think you know more than the economist in the article that you quoted then please give us your credentials that say so.
i expect that you would have at least a masters or PHD in economist and have written a couple of papers. if not
you are just blathering nonsense.

the fact is your own article says you are wrong, and instead of just admitting it you are doubling and tripling down on what you are saying.
even though it is no more correct than the first time you said it.

No, bad government is bad. The size is not really relevant.

The size does matter. The more control a bad government has, the worse it will be for the citizenry.

You can blame bad weather all you want to, but there were hurricanes and snowstorms under President Obama as well, and we still didn't lose jobs as a result of it. We're now nine months into Trump's term, and we're at a point now where Trump has to start taking ownership of the economy.
It's the weather.

Presidents don't usually make a big dent in employment, period. If that were the case, then every president would do everything possible to create jobs every month. In most cases, the biggest effects of a President are:

1) Passing stimulus measures during a down turn
2) Not Screw Up the rest of the time

Trump hasn't done much at all, especially compared to Obama's early term. Congress is incapable of passing any legislation whatsoever (even big donors are pissed now), and Trump is mostly incapable at pushing Congress. We have had a big encouraging hint with his willingness to work with Democrats, but it hasn't produced anything substantial yet. Executive actions can't do much either, pro or con.

So technically, while we might say "it's Trump's economy now," the reality is that he isn't responsible for jobs lost due to two massive hurricanes hitting around the same time. Once he appoints a Fed chair or gets some legislation passed, then we should start attributing a small part of the responsibility for jobs numbers to Trump.

I love people who talk down success.

Fun fact:

Our population is 325,051,571
There are 154,345,000 people working.
There are 170,706,571 who are not working. And yes, I know some are retired, are children, etc.

Does anyone wonder why we are drowning in debt? Getting people working is our only salvation, so hey, cheer the win! We all win here.

Who is "drowning in debt"? And for every dollar owed, isn't there a dollar in excess financial assets owned by someone? Isn't it a wash in the end?

LOL... When there's a (D) in the WH the Republicans swear the government does NOT create jobs.. With a (R) in the WH they swear it does. And Obama's Unemployment rate was ALWAYS faked and lies. Now those same people think the 4.2% rate under Trump is the greatest news in the history of the world.

What a bunch of gullible phonies Republicans are.

Wait. So are you saying we can give credit to trump for growth? And that the source is good news (because it attributed the problem to weather). Just wondering.

Yes it is, but the extra taxes needed to pay the interest amounts to a transfer payment from tax payers to those receiving the interest which are often foreign entities, other banks, and retirement funds which is all well and good except for the re distributive effect of my taxes "to others".

Wait. So are you saying we can give credit to trump for growth? And that the source is good news (because it attributed the problem to weather). Just wondering.

Nah. I'm going to be a gullible phoney like you cons were for 8 years. I'm saying the 4.2% rate is BS. Trump and his Admin are fudging the number. Fake news. Lol

So you are blaming Trump for having worse storms than Obama did.

How do you think he controlled the severity or the quantity of the storms?

Congress drives the economy, not the President. The market knows this and it knows that Dem. congresses are bad for business.
:lamo

It's screamingly obvious by now that the Republican-controlled Congress is not in control, and has serious issues passing legislation. Repeal of the ACA -- which should have been a slam dunk -- was a debacle. Tax reform / tax cuts are likely to meet the same fate.

We've also seen the economy, stock markets, bond markets etc do very well during numerous Democratic Congresses -- and poorly with Republican Congresses. The economy was on a roll for almost all of the Clinton years, while Obama helped prevent another Great Depression, and presided over one of the longest expansions (recoveries) in US history, one that has continued long after he left office.

Republican Congresses, meanwhile, mostly just cut taxes for the rich. They sometimes deregulate, but the thing is, regulation is not an "everyone loses" situation -- rather, it shifts things around, and creates as many winners as losers. E.g. Sarbanes-Oxley required financial businesses to keep better track of communications, a step which imposed some compliance costs on those companies (loser) but also made litigation much easier (everyone wins, except those engaging in wrongdoing) and created work and jobs (winner, software industry).

This Congress in particular is pretty much screwed. Republicans don't have the votes to pass anything on their own, and utterly refuse to work with Democrats, resulting in paralysis. Even Republican donors have noticed, and are livid, and are now slashing campaign contributions. Needless to say, infighting and inaction is not what they paid for, right...?

So you are blaming Trump for having worse storms than Obama did.

How do you think he controlled the severity or the quantity of the storms?

I don't know how he does it but he shouldn't.

Who is "drowning in debt"? And for every dollar owed, isn't there a dollar in excess financial assets owned by someone? Isn't it a wash in the end?

There is that symetry till default. ;)

Of course liberals blamed the weather for poor job growth under President Obama, and it is perfectly valid to do so when the majority of economic analysts are saying the exact same thing.

Then I suggest you go back and re read your own supporting article. Seems as though the "Economic analysts" are saying the same things here about the hurricanes concerning the MONTHS, numbers....Can't have it both ways there bud....Good when Obama used it, bad when Trump uses it....

The rest is of course just bash Trump, and ignore anything that democrats argued was valid when they were in power....
