Kasich: I can't support the GOP if it doesn't reform

BY MALLORY SHELBOURNE - 10/01/17

Ohio Gov. John Kasich (R) on Sunday said if the GOP does not fix itself, he won’t be able to continue supporting his own party. “If the party can’t be fixed, Jake, then I’m not going to be able to support the party. Period. That’s the end of it,” Kasich told Jake Tapper on CNN’s “State of the Union.” “I mean, I’m worried about our country and my kids’ future. But have I given up? Of course not," he continued. Kasich shut down the suggestion that he is planning to become an independent but emphasized the need for the GOP to reform. “No, not at this — what I’m saying to you is we need to fix it,” he said when asked about becoming an Independent. “If the Republican Party is going to be anti-immigration, if it’s not going to be worried about debt, if it’s going to be anti-trade, this is not where our party can be.”

Kasich’s comments came during a discussion of the recent Alabama Senate GOP primary runoff, where last week conservative former judge Roy Moore defeated Sen. Luther Strange (R-Ala.) in a race that gave a victory to the anti-establishment wing of the party. Moore in his career has made numerous controversial remarks, including in 2005 that homosexuality should be illegal, according to footage unearthed by CNN. Kasich laughed when Tapper asked if Moore, following the win in Alabama, is the future of the GOP. “I certainly hope not,” Kasich replied.

Kasich realizes that the GOP is at civil war with itself - centrist conservatives vs Breitbart nationalists - and the victory of Judge Roy Moore in Alabama was just the opening shot. Wealthy far-right mega-donors such as Robert Mercer and his daughter Rebekah plan to challenge all GOP Congressional seats up for reelection in 2018 with their own far-right candidates

I think the GOP rode the crazy-shark for too long, pandering to nuts for votes. Now the nuts are running the asylum. The dems may be making the same mistake.

I could support a Kasich party. It's too sane to make it, though.

He is asking that something be fixed for which he is also responsible? I mean, he is one of the leaders. He is one of the people that should do the fixing.

If he wants to leave that would be for the best. Good Luck in the democratic party or where ever he lands.
I think he won something like 160 delegates in the republican primary.
The true civil war is in the democratic party. If you don't support abortion the wacky left will shred you.

It’s a 4-way split, at the least. Centrists, which few exist; Establishment Conservatives; Tea Party Conservatives; Trumpists.

Kasich throwing his hat into the ring?

The only way to fix the GOP is to get rid of McDonnell, Ryan, McCain, and the likes of Kasich. Hopefully Trump is just the start.

This is why I wish Trump voters stuck to watching professional wrestling and reality tv. Their mediocrity could be isolated in front of the sad glows of their television sets.

I think tea party conservatives and Trumpists tend to overlap. Which is why the two defeated the establishment in the primaries. The Centrists by definition are not conservatives, Although they like other centrists may tend to lean one one way or the other.

The only way to fix the GOP is to get rid of the far right, just like the only way to fix the Democrats is to get rid of the far left. But both sides cater almost exclusively to the extremists. Kasich isn't what I want in a conservative party, but then again, the GOP gave up conservatism a long time ago. Now they're just hyper-religious liberals.

Radical extremists don't typically grow bored and go home. In order for the country to prevent a further slide into radical right wing extremism, moderates across the country are going to have to show up in force to defeat them. There's nothing else for it.

There is no war except the "wacky" and extremist right wing war against the civil rights of women and minorities. This will ultimately be their downfall. Americans believe in civil rights.

WRONG! But that is OK. :2razz:

Senate Foreign Relations Chairman Bob Corker (R/TN) has decided to call it quits at age 65. Corker had recently criticized Trump for his Charlottesville remarks.

The 'neo-conservative' billionaire Koch Brothers have formed a Super-Pac to support Andy Ogles campaign for Corker's seat.

Just pointing out what a duplicitous feckless two-faced coward Kasich truly is: when exactly did he feel that the GOP needs to change? Was it during the 40+ years that he was a member of the GOP? Notice how he doesn't actually articulate what these so-called problems are? Smart Creative policies? Then that means we should ignore completely the establishment policies people like Kasich has been endorsing for decades.

Oh, he means he wants the GOP to be establishment: the stuff that people have gotten sick of. So basically he's an idiot.

You seem to be implying that you want more Neocons in government :lamo

Not implying anything. Simply stating that another anti-establishment Bannon-clone will be running for a vacant GOP seat.

Kasich is probably right. The GOP we all grew up with is being torn apart by wealthy far-right elites.

Kasich needs to run as a third party candidate in 2020.
