FBI Director Christopher A. Wray testifies before Congress

The FBI is conducting about 1,000 investigations of suspected white supremacists or other types of domestic terrorists who might be planning violence, top federal officials told Senate lawmakers Wednesday. Christopher A. Wray, in his first congressional testimony as FBI director, confirmed that his office has about 1,000 inquiries that people generally categorize as “domestic terrorism’’ — a catchall term often used to describe those motivated to commit violence in furtherance of racist causes. “We’re very busy,’’ Wray said. Asked by Johnson if there are any differences in how the FBI handles white supremacist terrorism cases vs. Islamic State terrorism cases, he said there are not, except for the criminal laws that may be applied.

Federal law makes it a crime to provide material support to a foreign terrorist group. There is no corresponding law regarding support for a violent white supremacist group. “In most ways they’re similar, probably the biggest difference is there’s not a domestic terrorism offense as such,’’ Wray told the committee. The debate about the lack of such a law heated up after a suspected white supremacist drove his car into a crowd of protesters in Charlottesville this summer, killing a woman. He is awaiting trial in state court on murder charges. FBI officials have previously said they had about 1,000 ongoing investigations in the United States of suspects who may be inspired by the Islamic State terrorist group to commit violence. Wednesday’s hearing was the first public indication that the FBI is dealing with a similar number of domestic terrorism cases.

What Director Wray is saying is that FBI investigations into white-supremacist/domestic terrorism in the US is on a numerical par with FBI investigations of ISIS plots of domestic terrorism within the US.

Good to see that the FBI is trying to keep track of any group that wants to harm any
one in America.

The FBI have been keeping track of bad people for decades.

Reverend Martin Luther King Jr's 1963 'I have a dream' speech on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial in Washington was a defining moment of the 20th century.

His message of equality and fairness inspired generations of people across the world - but also put him at the center of the FBI's surveillance operations.

Attorney-General at the time Robert F. Kennedy approved a wiretap and hidden microphone operation that bugged many of King's conversations from 1963 until his assassination in 1968.

William Sullivan, then head of the FBI’s domestic intelligence division, wrote in a top-secret memo at the time:

Personally, I believe in the light of King’s powerful, demagogic speech that he stands head and shoulders over all other Negro leaders put together when it comes to influencing great masses.
We must mark him now, if we have not done so before, as the most dangerous Negro of the future in this Nation from the standpoint of communism, the Negro and national security.

They are saying that the administration is evenhanded.

 Looks about right to me. Yet the spin will be to point out the "white". What I wonder is how many investigations are going on about terrorists from other ethnicities/countries/races/religions. At least going by the new definition which was made more generalized.

No such 'white' spin was in the article nor in my comments. What others post is ... entirely their opinions.

Didn't say otherwise did I? ;)

But one is curious, what is the reason that you posted this? Simple curiosity? To make a point? Why?

No underlying point. In all honesty the number/parity of ongoing investigations regarding "suspected white supremacists or other types of domestic terrorists" and "ISIS terrorism investigations" surprised me.

Especially concerning to me was the # of FBI investigations regarding possible ISIS terrorist plots in the US. Far more than I would have guessed.

What I wonder is how many of those investigations of terrorism are actual cases of terrorism and not just falls under the expanded umbrella of terrorism when they expanded the definition.

Haven't a clue on baselines. That's above my pay grade.

I was told white supremacists are small in number and harmless. I was told Antifa and BLM are the real threat along with that SJW with a big mouth at those scary librul indoctrination campuses.

I was told it was the end of the U.S. and the whole country is going to hell because of those people. And that football player that took a knee during the anthem, how many people did he probably kill or maim doing that? What is going on?
