Joey Odoms doesn't feel welcome, resigns as Baltimore Ravens' national anthem singer

OWINGS MILLS, Md. -- Baltimore Ravens national anthem singer Joey Odoms resigned Tuesday at a time when protests during the song have generated strong emotions across the country.
"The tone/actions of a large number of NFL fans in the midst of our country's cultural crisis have convinced me that I do not belong there," Odoms wrote on Facebook. "Someone once told me to always 'go where you're welcomed.'"
Odoms, who is African-American, is a member of the Maryland National Guard. When he was a soldier in Afghanistan, Odoms met John Harbaugh and informed the Ravens coach that he wanted to be the team's next national anthem singer.
Yep, it's not looking good. Keep up the good work, Goodell. :thumbdown

The NFL better act very quickly because the PULL UP and LOW TERRAIN cockpit alarm is sounding!
There is going to be a massive backlash if they don't stop this right now.

The first three posts read as if the speakers think he's resigning because the protests didn't make him feel welcome. That certainly seems to be the insinuation in their posts. I hope they are not asserting that because that would be false.

The combat vet is resigning because of the fans' negative reactions to the protests. He's fine with the protests.

"He later added another post to his Instagram account to clarify his initial post: “Fans who attack players for protesting, (a right in which I fought to defend) but are simply not interested in understanding why, is the reason I am resigning.”"

Of course, the article from the OP never actually said he was resigning because the protests made him feel unwelcome. It just sounds like those responsible for the first three posts wanted that to be the reason, so they assumed it without trying to dig any further. I doubted it and dug further.

At least I hope they were just careless. If they knew the real reason he was resigning was the nasty reaction by people to the protests but nonetheless pretended otherwise, their posts would be straight-up dishonesty.

Make your players say and do exactly what we want them to or we'll watch another pro football league!!!

I am more of a college football fan anyway.
but if no one saw this coming they were just blind.

There are reports of more people quitting over this.

No we expect professionals to act like professionals.

Another one who is either making unfounded assumptions or is being purposefully dishonest.

You don't expect people to read and understand what they are reacting to, do you? I mean, look at the whole NFL brouhaha where people are presenting their propaganda as if the protest is against the Flag or the Anthem? It's absolutely NOT what this is all about, but people do not take the time to think; they just react. It's not like we punish stupid in this country.

Most employers DO have rules as to workers' behavior on the job.

And now conservatives have become liberals. They scream at the top of their lungs their outrage until company X fires group Y for "offensive" issue Z. Do conservatives hate freedom of speech now? That's how this was marketed all the other times by conservatives: Free speech.

That is the way I read it from the start. I think his point actually isn't as great as he and others think, though.

This guy has taken a side... a side that his side can't even seem to agree on... and in the process shown that he is angered by another person's choice to peacefully protest a peaceful protest.

Even more interestingly, DirectTV, which has a no-refund policy, is offering customers a refund if they were insulted by the players' disrespectful behavior.

DirecTV customer service representatives contacted by both Bloomberg and the Wall Street Journal were offering refunds to certain customers who complained about the protests. The Journal spoke with subscribers who were able to get refunds or cancel their packages.

This represents a break from protocol; according to the organization's website, users who want to cancel or downgrade their pass have to do so before the season, which began on September 9. "Any season pass purchases made after Saturday, September 10, 2017 are strictly nonrefundable," the website states.

Indeed. So many on your side seem to be demanding that NFL fans shut up and spend money....

Well, no, he has not shown or said he is "angered". That is another false statement.

He said quite clearly that the fans' nasty reaction to the protest made him feel unwelcome.

Again, the word was "unwelcome". He doesn't say he's pissed off at them. He just feels unwanted so he'll go do something else. Let's not put words in people's mouths and them call them hypocrites based on the words they never said.

Incorrect. Conservatives have always backed allowing employers to set regulations and standards. Liberals? Not so much. Liberals are more interested in promoting unions that protect workers from employer standards.

I support whatever the players' team owners decide, but if I was one of them -- I'd fire those no-good malcontents.

lol "my side".

I never said they should shut up and spend money. That's just stupid deflectionary tactics to once again, not engage in the fundamental. But if your goal is to prove me right, kudos.

Oh my how terrible. It's called the real world. It's called doing your job!

On your time you can do what ever you like as long as you don't end up in jail.
Don't disrespect the flag.

He is obviously angered. If he wans't then he wouldn't resign.

He said quite clearly that the fans' nasty reaction to the protest made him feel unwelcome.

So the fans support for honoring the national anthem made the national anthem signer feel unwelcome? Oooookay....

Again, the word was "unwelcome". He doesn't say he's pissed off at them. He just feels unwanted so he'll go do something else. Let's not put words in people's mouths and them call them hypocrites based on the words they never said.

Right right... he thinks the fans of the NFL and supporters of the National Anthem didn't welcome him. They angered him and he quit. Never was there a better example of a self fulfilling prophecy.

Pretty stupid way to protest.

Not a deflection. Your side of the argument is intent of alienating as many NFL fans as possible... if I can attribute your words and actions to consciously considered.

There is also the possibility that the actions of that side are ill considered and unintentionally destructive.

I hear Santa has picked him up this morning and he is on his way to the Isle of Misfit Toys.
