How Tom Price decided chartered, private jets were a good use of taxpayer money

https://www.washingtonpost.com/nati...tories-2_tompriceflights-120am:homepage/story

After Tom Price was sworn in as health and human services secretary, the Georgia Republican faced an inconvenience known to millions of Americans: His flight was delayed, an aide said, and he was forced to spend hours at an airport. The delay left Price a no-show at an early public appearance his office helped plan.

Price knew well the pain of flying to and from Washington as a member of Congress for 12 years. But now he was the head of a trillion-dollar federal agency and one of President Trump’s point men to fulfill the campaign promise of repealing the Affordable Care Act. Flight delays and no-shows would not do.

So began a practice in Price’s office of turning to private, chartered jet travel, aides say, to ferry the Cabinet official to and from meetings around the country — often at a cost to taxpayers of thousands, or even tens of thousands of dollars, per trip.

We had a guy like that- entitled to his entitlements- It did not go over well to say the least
Now Price is a very, very important man.
Your opinion - is he wasting taxpayers dollars?
Or do you agree with this spending?

Should be fired as fast as possible.

Nancy Pelosi used to take an Air Force jet back and forth to San Francisco, but that was ok.
Travel abuse has been going on for years, but of course it's only a problem now.

How about instead of making this a partisan crap throwing competition you just tell us your opinion. Should government officials be chartering private jets with our taxes or should they be slumming it with an airline like the rest of us?

I say **** no they don't need private jets, neither Price nor Pelosi. The President, VP, and SecDef sure but few else.

If he has certain very important meetings, then I can understand some use of private jets. However, if that's simply is SOP? We should find it unacceptable, imo. And my money's on it's SOP. And who shops for the most economical service to use? I'm betting nobody.

President Bush ordered that the Speaker of the House, being next in line of succession after the VP, be given Air Force shuttle service after 9/11.

Nice try though, but you should research first to avoid looking silly.

I don't want to discourage you with your first attempt to make a point and back it up but this "narrative" is exactly why you shouldn't get your info from conservative sites. Heres a good place to start.

It isn't SOP. From the article alone:

The flights aboard private jets — including one Price took last week in a cabin with high-backed leather chairs and a kitchen — have even led some senior administration officials to distance the White House from Price’s travel practices.

A senior administration official who spoke on condition of anonymity said Thursday that the White House did not approve Price’s travel on chartered planes. Politico also quoted an unnamed White House official questioning Price’s effectiveness this week as he has traveled outside D.C. amid a last-minute push in the Capitol to repeal the Affordable Care Act, also known as Obamacare.

Also, the office of the Inspector General is looking into this:

The HHS inspector general's office is reviewing HHS Secretary Tom Price’s taxpayer-funded travel on private jets, a spokesperson told POLITICO.

“We take this matter very seriously, and when questions arose about potentially inappropriate travel, we immediately began assessing the issue,” the spokesperson said. “I can confirm that work is underway and will be completed as soon as possible.”

OIG: Investigation of Tom Price’s charter travel is 'underway' - POLITICO

“I can understand why the secretary might have to use a charter flight to get to a hurricane-devastated region, but Philadelphia is not one of those regions this year,” said Walter Shaub, who was director of the United States Office of Government Ethics until July. “I find it hard to believe he couldn’t find a suitable commercial flight to Philadelphia.”

“This wasteful conduct reflects disdain for the ethical principle of treating public service as a public trust,” said Shaub, who was appointed by former President Barack Obama. “Public office isn’t supposed to come with frivolous perks at taxpayer expense.”

Price’s private-jet travel breaks precedent - POLITICO

It's considered a misuse of taxpayer money.

I think they should sit and wait for the first hop on a military plane just like any private on we would have to do when he didn't have the airfare military plane just like any private on leave.
Let them sit In a jump seat for a change...

The government already has a fleet of corporate jets. We don't need congressmen doing their own charters unless they are paying for them.

Fire his sorry ass. He never should have had this job in the first place. This sort of screw the taxpayer mentality is far far far from draining the swamp.

I said "abuse" not that they aren't authorized.

You should learn to read, then read the article to avoid looking silly.

Judicial Watch uncovered that Pelosi’s military travel cost the United States Air Force $2,100,744.59 over one two-year period — $101,429.14 of which was for in-flight expenses, including food and alcohol.

"Used to use", those are your words...

Edit: and you might want to fact check the Judicial Watch claim too. Just a hint to save you embarrassment.

"Used to use", those are your words...

Which was followed by the word "abuse". See how that works?

Do you think Pelosi's $50,000 a year beer and burger bill is acceptable?

Price should do what the rest of us do when we need to absolutely positively have to be there overnight. Leave earlier. Another question. Doesn't the government have jets on call for this reason. Why private charters?

Depends. I actually recommend watching some videos from wendover productions in the price of air travel and how they arrive at those prices. Sure...first class/business class is great and very efficient. But it is efficient because it is deliberately slow and spreads the cost across multiple parties and so on. The small planes are more economically efficient in some aspects, but end up not being so because of price per person.

Anyway. The short version...this isn't wrong if it is costing the taxpayer more money for him to not be on time to his appointments because he is relying on inefficient travel (and he has no choice). What do you think? Would you say it is fair to determine that before rushing to judgement? And don't get me wrong. I hate federal politicians for this reason. But I can understand when talking about travel time and missing appointments.

no, they shouldnt be, but they shouldn't be fired for it either, unless you plan to fire all of congress.

Just for insight:

I think this all gives good insight into how we should look at this. The question becomes what kind of aircraft? How much do we lose when he is late/no show? What are the risks of no show on standard transport? Is their a better and cheaper option? Can we force him to take that? Will it be as reliable? Would using military aircraft as shuttle vans be an acceptable use of our military? Could we contract out to an airliner to offer government flights at a discounted rate...if they can give quality on time flights?

I can think of a few options based on my understanding of air travel...but I'm limited by inexperience and only educated by my love of aircraft lol (want to be a pilot but have epilepsy so I can't).
