China banks reportedly to halt business with North Korea as South Korea sends $8 million
http://www.foxnews.com/world/2017/0...rth-korea-as-south-korea-sends-8-million.html

North Korea learned this week Chinese banks will no longer do business with the Hermit Kingdom, in the strongest sign yet pressure from the Trump administration to choke off funding to the rogue nation is working.

Chinese banks received a document Monday stating they should halt financial services and loans to new and existing North Korean customers as a result of strict U.N. sanctions passed earlier this month, a source told Reuters on Thursday.
Looks like we're finally getting cooperation.

More can be done, Russia-China halting use of NK foreign workers- Other countries doing the same.
EU, Canada, Australia and others to work with the US on further sanctions, pertaining to countries that still presently accept exports from NK and pressuring them to halt all foreign worker programs with NK.

This is excellent news.

It is, and we do know that NK has used Chinese made equipment- electronics in their rockets.

China knows which side her bread is buttered on.

What's so excellent about it? The ball is in NKS court. Stop with the rockets and the nukes or Trump will. Good for China for making an effort to pressure NK but ultimately it's up to Kim. Think about what a sanction actually is. It's a penalty imposed on undesirable behavior. The fact that a sanction is being levied means NK is engaging in that undesirable behavior. I hate to be a Debbie downer but this isn't a victory.

Well it's certainly not something to be unhappy about.

China might believe Trump will act differently than Obama, when red lines are crossed and that all options could really be on the table, when Trump says so.

Good news on the surface, but let's see how it goes in reality.

Also, what's up with this:

"Chinese banks received a document Monday stating they should halt financial services and loans to new and existing North Korean customers as a result of strict U.N. sanctions passed earlier this month, a source told Reuters on Thursday.

“Our bank is fulfilling our international obligations and implementing United Nations sanctions against North Korea. As such, we refuse to handle any individual loans connected to North Korea,” the document reportedly said."

So they're stopping loans to individuals? But what about to the state businesses and the state itself? Why are they silent, to that?

I hope I'm misunderstanding this.

Agreed, a "good gesture"

Whether it's a gesture "on the surface", or "substantive", will remain to be seen.

Re: China banks reportedly to halt business with North Korea as South Korea sends $8

The Maoist Xi Jinping has never liked being hard on the Kim Dynasty, however, the party leadership has shifted beneath him. Very few of the CCP Boyz in Beijing like Kim Jong Un and even fewer share Xi's bogeyman fear of a North Korean collapse under sanctions or other pressures.

Earlier this year applications to Chinese universities by North Korean students were suddenly turned down wholesale. Since the sixth nuclear test a few weeks ago the 2013 scholarship program Xi initiated for NK students announced it will no longer be able to accommodate NK students, which is its only purpose. Harbin University of Science and Technology which is affiliated with PLA has cleared out all its NK students.

So Xi has had to cave in at home too.

Chinese universities ‘limiting admission of North Korean students’ as nuclear crisis escalates

Chinese universities are restricting the admission of North Korean students and even blacklisting their scholarship applications as the nuclear weapons crisis escalates on the Korean peninsula, according to several college enrollment officers.

One recruitment official at a university in Beijing said his college was cutting back on North Korean student numbers, especially those majoring in physics or material science.

All the officials said they were following government instructions, but they did not make clear at what level the orders were made.

Surveillance has also been stepped up on North Korean students studying at Chinese universities since Pyongyang carried out its sixth nuclear test earlier this month, according to an official at a college in Beijing.

“For those already on campus, we can’t send them back home, but each of them is closely watched and followed by security personnel, or through technical methods, to prevent them from obtaining sensitive materials,” he said

All the Chinese universities that over the past two decades have had the total of 4000 NK students on campus say that when the norks are finishing their programs and preparing to go home they get miserably depressed. Xi is probably getting there too. Neither is Xi in step with the Chinese people who have an immense disrespect for Kim and who see their leaders as weak toward Kim and manipulated by him.

Many elites in China and in the region have noted that once Xi came to power in 2013 the NK nuclear and ICBM programs took off to make rapid and radical new developments. Kim is believed to be ready now to explode a huge H-Bomb from a massive new ICBM over the north Pacific.

All this will do is hurt the people of NK who are already starving. Is there any evidence that financial sanctions stop regimes? We sanctioned Saddam for years and it still took a costly war and political nightmare to finally take him down.

No, the Kim Jong dynasty is not going anywhere.

North Korea has been conditioned over the decades that if you rattles its sword loud enough and long enough the US will eventually send them food and money. The dictator of North Korea from Grampa down to grandson have all existed in a Skinner box. I'm not sure we can really reverse that training at this point simply because the amount that would be required of North Korea in return to concessions is beyond what a North Korean dictator can comprehend.

No, the Kim Jong dynasty is not going anywhere.

The problem is UN corruption. The reason Saddam sanctions were unsuccessful is because the UN authorities responsible for policing the sanctions were getting kickbacks in the Oil-for-Food program... likewise we have seen recently an expose of a huge corruption scheme between North Korea and UN officials that allowed North Korea to transfer money against UN sanctions.

You can't police crime when the police are criminals.

Re: China banks reportedly to halt business with North Korea as South Korea sends $8

They'll get around this sanction with offshore banking/accounts.

North Korean tanker ships also take on fuel at a Russian port (Vladivostok), list China as the destination, then turn their maritime transponders off as they near NK waters.

That is why it is time to put an end to the process.

Which process? Can we just assume that sanctions will be undone by crooked UN officials... or do you mean we should do away with the UN involvement?
