I am 100% for this. They should be free. I wish we did this for them, but I like the fact they are doing it on their own. They have never felt like they were a part of Iraq.

KIRKUK, Iraq — Iraqi Kurds are set to vote next week on independence from Iraq in what many say is a popular expression of their desire for self-determination after suffering for a century under war and dictatorship.

But their staunchest ally, the United States, opposes the move, as do Iraqi rivals and regional powers. They say it could spark new conflicts and aggravate old ones at a time when the nation is on the cusp of defeating the Islamic State.

I support the Kurds as the most reliable ally we have in the area. They have the best act to gether of all the societies there. But I don't think it is risk free for them to create their own state. Every country in the region hates the idea and most are willing to fight to prevent it. The Turks seem to be amassing tanks along the boarder. Russia would probably support Turkey in order bind them and force the US to be seen to drop an ally.

Turkey, Iran and the rest of Iraq will be against it.

Turkey will see it as a huge threat to its security given the long running fight against the PKK. Should it declare independence I would not be surprised to see Turkey send military forces into the "new state". Turkey I am sure would be willing to drop Nato membership to prevent a Kurdish state from existing.

The Kurds will not be allowed to form an independent state by Turkey, Iraq and possibly Iran. Syria too would oppose it but they are such a basket case right now that there is little they can do about it.

If Turkey moves militarily against the Kurds then the US and Europe will be faced with some hard decisions. Do they support the Kurds and alienate the second largest military power in NATO? Would such support anger Iraqi nationalists as well? Would supporting the Kurds drive Turkey closer to Russia? Would an angry and Shi'a dominated Iraq realign with a Russo-Iranian bloc?

If America and Europe don't support the Kurds and they are defeated would angry Kurdish fighters and groups feel betrayed and turn on the West as the Afghan Mujahideen did 28 years ago? If the Kurds are defeated by Turkey would Erdogan return their lands to Syria and Iraq where they might rebel again or hold on to them as a Turkish protectorate? Finally, given the Turks' historical record, could a forced ethnic cleansing take place leading to genocide as it did 102 years ago to the Southern Armenians under the Ottomans?

This independence vote could unleash a regional cataclysm.

Cheers?

Iran and the Turks aren't happy. They should be pumped. It would get the Kurds out of their countries.

I get they will all hate it, but this won't be the first time in history the middle east gets upset about a new independent nation. I hope for the Kurds it works out. I never knew who they really were until 2003. Since then, I have been a supporter.

So the question is how to decide.

Well iraq will **** bricks so will iran and turkey, syria has floated giving them autonomy as a state with syria. Iraq is not so much opposed to kurds having a country as they are losing part of their country, the kurdish north there has many recources, and the iraqi's qould rather keep their federal system, where kurdistan is a state within iraq with the ability to govern itself, but is still a part of that country.

Iran would fear their kurds would try the same, syria in one way or another is going to pay the kurds for their loyalty, butautonomy is slim and independance will not happen.

Oh and turkey, they are already threatening to invade syria to destroy the kurdish ypg that is fighting isis, and no surprise coming from turkey, as they are the worst of the 4 countries by a longshot in terms of treatment towards the kurds.

This. Turkey will wage full scale war if it ever happens.

And that is another example of why the UN is in its present form so often irrelevant.

Yeah, that's going to make several nations in the region crap rubber bricks...and will likely destabilize the region for a bit.

The region is already destabilized. If anything, I think it would stabilize the Kurdish nation.
