Total lack of military bearing. I wouldn't have allowed it in my unit. I guess that's why we're the greatest fighting force in human history.

My mistake. I thought we were talking about US forces. As such, I have not heard the term Padre in the US military.

No problems- Each Military has differing customs and regulations.

Strange. I have. Then again, it was the 1970S through the 1990s and primarily on the west coast (Missions galore).

I'm an expert on military courtesy, discpline and bearing. If I can't depend on a soldier to show proper respect to the rank and uniform, I can't depend on him to perform much harder tasks on the battlefield, while his emotions are telling him to do exactly the opposite of what I'm telling him to do. That's why military courtesy exists. It's one of the training tools used to condition a soldier to follow orders on the battlefield.

And why is an ACCEPTED term a "total lack of military bearing"?

Would you act the same towards aircrew names?

On all other countries- customs and regs -Nope- you are hung up over the use of Padre and have derailed the thread- so I am done with that and you.

It's slang......not a technical term regardless of what anyone tells you........ok? If you are being casual with the Chaplain while shooting the breeze just to pass time, they don't care if you call them "padre" in the loose sense of military protocol.

But it's still Chaplain.

Because you're addressing an officer. Chaplains are officers and rate the respect and courtesy of that rank. Their status as holy men is secondary.

Just like a captain who flies an aircraft is captain, or sir. Not "pilot".

A captain who performs medical procedures is captain, or sir. Not "doc", or, "doctor".

In the US yes- In Canada Padre or Chaplin or Sir/Ma'am

And uet the Chaplains often PREFER a mor w causal relationship BECAUSE THEY ARE CHAPLAINS, NOT DRILL INSTRUCTORS.

And the doctors I served with often preferred Doc to the Rank/Name.

In informal settings.

When Rank/Name was appropriate and warranted (formation, etc.) they were used .

The ones I dealt with wanted military courtesy to be observed. Because THEY WERE OFFICERS first and foremost.
