U.S. officials found evidence implicating a Vatican diplomat in a child-pornography case, the Vatican said Friday, leading officials in Rome to recall the priest to the Holy See. The case drew attention again to Pope Francis’s efforts to strengthen anti-abuse systems in the church and to debate about how well they’re working. The Rev. Tom Reese, a U.S. Jesuit and columnist with the Religion News Service, said the person would be dealt with at the Vatican under two systems: church law, which could result in him losing his status as a member of the clergy if he is found guilty, as well as under Vatican civil law if he committed a crime.

Vatican criminal law deems that possession of child pornography is punishable with up to two years in prison and a fine of up to $12,000. Producing or distributing child pornography is subject to more severe penalties, or if the offender possessed a “considerable quantity” of material.
Quite a disgusting move by the Holy See
The Vatican can waive Diplomatic Immunity under the Vienna convention.
For those of the Roman Catholic faith, perhaps writing their Bishop would help in this.
The justice system in the US is not a 3rd world country with show trials.
The Vatican must waive Diplomatic Immunity and he be tried in the US.
The penalties imposed by the Vatican are not commensurate with the alleged crimes committed.

How far does diplomatic immunity go?
There are limits, of course: Diplomats can't go around shooting people without consequences. The United States has the right to declare someone a persona non grata and to send him home for any reason. The official's home country can also try him at a local court. In the most egregious cases, the home country can waive the official's immunity privilege, in which case the offending diplomat can face prosecution in the United States. In 1997, for example, the Republic of Georgia waived the immunity of its No. 2 diplomat after he killed a 16-year-old girl from Maryland while driving drunk. He was prosecuted, convicted of manslaughter, and served three years in a North Carolina prison before returning to Georgia, where he was paroled after two more years in prison.

Porn? Mass murder not even. But porn? You are joking.

Nope- The Vatican has a long and disgusting history of covering for pedophiles.
Have you ever watched the movie Spotlight? If not- I suggest you do

Not just porn, child porn. You know, which harms and exploits children sexually.

seems the pontiff has been pretty hard-nosed about pedophiles within the ranks of clergy
let him handle it
and if this fellow does have a future opportunity to serve somewhere where children are present, his inclinations are well known to the community that he is expected to serve

Nope. Let them keep their diplomatic immunity. Let all the world see how the church handle this, and let all the world see the church for exactly what it is.

I think this Pope is different.

Unsure - WaPo OP link blocked by paywall.

I think this Pope is different.

Yes I agree he is, and reason why diplomatic immunity should be revoked.
Same as he sent the No 2 in the Vatican back to Australia to face trial.

I voted unsure. I held diplomatic immunity for the better part of 20 years and can attest that it is a necessary practice. But I honestly don't have a firm grasp of Vatican law and what capabilities they have as far as a justice system is concerned.

And in many cases saves them from starvation. You think that eviler that taking pictures?

So, you would find, if you were interested in the facts have many organizations in high esteem. But it is not they you hate.

I do not hate the Roman Catholic Church. I despise child molesters and those that protect them. The RC Church has a long and sordid history of protecting child molesters

Do you honestly think those who produce child porn are doing so to keep the kids from starving as if it's some benevolence? I can't believe anyone would rationalize that.

I don't really care, why people do things that save kids from starving. It seems rather so secondary here.

I don't know enough about diplomatic law to make an informed decision, but I certainly agree with what your wrote.

Sure they do. The Catholic church is full of closet homosexuals and pedophiles. Priests are forbidden to marry or associate with women in a romantic way, so they turn to other forms of sexuality. Ever wonder why a lot of priests seem to like children so much? Think about it!
