2 Florida nuclear plants likely to shut down if Irma continues path | Fox News

Officials at Florida Power & Light’s two nuclear plants were finalizing staffing plans and cleaning up their grounds Wednesday, but no one at FPL had yet made the call on when to shut down as Hurricane Irma drew nearer.

Peter Robbins, spokesman for FPL, said shutting down a reactor is a gradual process, and the decision will be made “well in advance” of the Category 5 storm making landfall.

I wonder how well our nuke plants hold up under Cat 5.

the US has never been the recipient of two Category 4, or higher hurricanes within a month time frame; this could be a precedent .......

This might help answer your question.

How do nuclear power plants withstand hurricanes?

How do nuclear power plants withstand hurricanes?

According to a study from the Nuclear Energy Institute (NEI), nuclear sites for the production of energy are designed to withstand hurricanes, and they carry a long history of successes.

With the contention structures of the steel-enforced concrete reactor, energy producing nuclear sites are the most solid of all of the United State's sites. Nuclear power point operators, additionally, are trained every six weeks on how to safely handle external phenomena such as hurricanes, and there is regular co-ordination with local, state and federal authorities to prepare for emergencies.

What infrastructure structure non-spending are you talking about here? I have driven Florida many times the last 8 years and seen LOTS of highway and bridge spending going on.

Doesn't matter, The GOP said NO to ALL of it ... so now I'm not interested in hearing any whining

Well yes it does matter if you are going to make the assertion and whine about it.

No actually I don't give a ****, I've made my own step to protect myself and my family.

So I'm cool.

They'll do fine. The one in Japan didn't do well because they couldn't get the reactor shut down and then maintain control before the tsunami flooded them, leading to the fire and then the release of radioactive material. Our plants in Florida shouldn't flood, and the reactor buildings are extremely reinforced concrete and should have no problems with the wind.

FIne with me ... I don't have one of those near me ...

These intelligent posts are always enlightening. /sarcasm

Serious question: Why write posts like the ones you've posted in this thread, that have dick-all to do with the thread topic?

That has absolutely nothing to do with this thread. In case anyone was wondering.

BTW ... you just might want to check the history of the Turkey Plant after the last smaller hurricane

But hey ... why should I care.

A HURRICANE HITTING FLORIDA IS RELEVANT ... IT HAS HISTORY ... TRY TAKING YOUR HEAD OUT OF YOUR ASS AND DO A LITTLE RESEARCHING.

Florida Fragile Infrastructure cost Americans Tax Dollars ... let revisit this Post next week, and you better NOT be here endorsing Disaster Relief money after saying my post was irrelevant.

Wow. If that's what you actually thought I said...

8 Years of Saying NO to Infrastructure Spending is going to HURT Americans .... and I SAND by that statement.

Now you can go REPORT that.

Tell me again how the federal government pays for nuclear plants?

You're such a DS ... do your own researching and try to learn something.

THe last time that plant got hit, THE GOVERNMENT couldn't get to it ... because the F'ing GOVERNMENT access roads got washed away.

I do my own research. Proving your assertions is not my responsibility. I was there in south Florida when this occurred (working for Miami-Dade), and I'll be in south Florida again if the current storm track maintains its trajectory. There was no problem with the plant last time. Please tell me again, how the federal government pays for nuclear plants?

They had an earthquake followed by a Tsunami flood. The flood is what did them in.
