I knew it was BS the moment I read the title of the thread. The POTUS is the Commander in chief, Mattis cannot simply override him.

I think it is far too early and sensationalist to start mouthing the words 'coup'. For one, Mattis is retired. He is not officially part of the military and is literally part of the civilian leadership. For two, Trump is being his usual asshole self - and those around him are reacting the way one would expect them to. Finally, Mattis is the first real leadership this country has had in almost two years, and I am glad and comforted that he is standing up to Trump and calling for unity. (And you have to admit, his "Hold the Line" speech was some epicsauce ****):



I hope Trump gets the **** primaried out of him in 2020...

Mattis is not "standing up to Trump", the President gave him the authority to make the call on tyrannys already serving. :roll:

Unless I miss my guess this is the study the Pentagon(Warfighters, NOT Ash Carter) wanted to do before Obama decided, but he was not interested, he knew what he wanted.

The way remember it everyone did just enough "study" to not get laughed at when they claimed to have looked, which the Marines took offense to.

I will be looking for info down the line on that as it becomes available.

It's also entirely to the benefit of the military as a whole, knowing that you won't get randomly ****ed due to whatever politics are popular at the time. That's a big thing for morale; the top guys have your back even if **** goes super south.

What I find a little scary is the implication from what he says here: "“Our focus must always be on what is best for the military’s combat effectiveness leading to victory on the battlefield,” Mattis said. “To that end, I will establish a panel of experts serving within the Departments of Defense and Homeland Security to provide advice and recommendations on the implementation of the president’s direction.”"
I mean, hadn't that been done before transgender persons were admitted? If that is true, whoever was Commander in Chief at that time should be called up to answer some questions.

That is why we stress that you read everything about posted links, and find all of the information you can on the subject. People are treating this like its some sort of death blow to Trumps attempt at banning transgendered people from the military...

Sometimes it feels like I am on one of those liberal echo chamber sites all over again.

This will most likely move to the action being adjusted to treat a majority of transgendered serviceman with a bit more leniency. Either by letting them serve out their last deployment, or allow them to have their transition out of the military, and then return at a later time.

I do sense that the decision will face plenty of changes before its actually finished though.

Well, yes, but to be fair, I'm Canadian, I don't particularly care about your Constitution (with all due respect, that's just the practical truth of it). I do, however, care about the fact that the president of the arguably the most powerful country in the world, with whom we are allied and aligned with on almost every aspect, has all the presidential qualities of an undisciplined kindergarten student on a sugar high. I just wish that the adults would step in more often and do more than PR work...start with sending him to the corner whenever foreign policy discussions of any kind come up, that would be wonderful.

You want the generals of the most powerful country in the world to be able to act on their own, ignoring their legally elected leadership, with no concequences?

I think you're either just talking out of your hindparts, trying to push peoples's buttons, or you're so blinded by hate that you aren't thinking rationally.

No, I don't "want" that...I'd rather you have a presidential president that acted in the best interests of their own citizenry, and the people around the world that have no choice in how much they are impacted by America. But since I can't have that, I'll take the generals, who have a lifetime of building their experience and earning their ranks. Basically, as a non-citizen heavily tied to the states through economic and defense alliances, I'd rather have a real general than a pretend president making decisions about the most powerful military in the world, given that no real presidents can be found at the moment.

You can't have it both ways: the president has all the power he wants, when you like him; the president can't be ignored by his subordinants when you hate him. A system like that won't work.

I suggest that you would feel better if you focused on facts and reality rather than being swayed by the fear mongering bull****.

The reality is that America made a massive mistake by putting that donut in the WH, the abysmal approval ratings show that the majority of you know it, and you've just gotta ride it out. Fan boys will be fan boys, everyone else knows what's up, and so the majority of folks will applaud whenever any of the real politicians and authority figures find ways to prevent Trump from turning America into the truck stop toilet he seems intent on making it. "Make America great again"....lol... At least he's still funny!

I didn't trash your country, I had nothing to do with that. Why do you insist on blaming everyone else for the spot you guys put yourselves in by voting for this clown? It's been ~10 months now, maybe start taking some accountability for putting a cartoon character in charge, and figure out where to go next...and ensure it never happens again!

And I get it, every president is going to piss someone off. But again, what has he done, other than back away from the TPP, that is good and hasn't sown further division? Lowest approval ratings of any modern president...you can't really "round up" from there to arrive at "No president is going to make decisions that is going to make everyone happy".
